I have round 3 as a pretty clear round for Islam, however, it can go to Volk depending on how much you want to value the inside leg kick Volk landed at 3:03 in Rd 3. 4-1 Islam on my scorecards, 3-2 Islam I think is acceptable, giving round 2 to Volk would be an actual robbery. Just for simplicities sake, I didn't include the takedowns Islam landed in those rounds, just going by strikes.
You leave out the fact that Volk dropped islam round 2 so you have to give him that round. You also have to give Volk round 4 by the judging criteria. Round 3 I can see islam winning.

It's unclear in real-time because of the angle but they do a slow-motion replay at the end of the round and it's clear that Volk is pressuring Islam, as Islam backs up he trips against the fence. They show the angle in the slow motion, Volk misses by a mile. Also Islam is clearly falling before Volk's punch even makes it anywhere near Islam's head, just follow the feet and you'll see. Regardless, Volk does a play-by-play on his own channel and makes no mention of a knockdown in rd 2 and doesn't even acknowledge the slip, meanwhile he acknowledges Islam's 'counter 2' which was the most impactful strike of the round. As far as round 4, I'm not an expert on the specific rules, I know people throw out effective grappling etc. but I'm not going to pretend to be an expert. It is however, 1 of the 3 rounds that has unanimous consensus that Islam won which includes media, analysts, Volk himself & Volk's coaches.

Eric nicksick, coach of now 3 UFC champions, said absolutely no way you can give Makhachev round 4 or the fight. If you slow the round 2 knockdown down, the way you can tell the punch completely connected is that Islam’s ear indented. The punch landed to Islam’s ear and part of Volk’s fist landed behind it, causing islam to temporarily lose balance since the punch hit the cerebellum. Yes it wasn’t the strongest knockdown in the world but it was the biggest strike of that round for sure, and since the round outside of that was only a slight edge to Islam, you have to give Volk the round. If the judges didn’t have instant replay, I can understand. If they did have instant replay then they are corrupt. As for why Volk won round 4: Why did Volk win round 4? According to the unified rules of MMA: “It shall be noted that a successful takedown is not merely a changing of position, but the establishment of an attack from the use of the takedown. Top and bottom position fighters are assessed more on the impactful/effective result of their actions, more so than their position.” Therefore Islam’s takedown doesn’t even really count, since he did 0 with it. Also there’s no way you can argue Islam did more from top than Volk did from bottom. Also from the judging criteria: “. Impact shall also be assessed when a fighter‟s actions, using striking and/or grappling, lead to a diminishing of their opponents‟ energy, confidence, abilities and spirit.” Who had the higher spirits that round, and was revving up the crowd? It was Volk. Makhachev was looking at the clock and wincing at pain whenever Volk landed. Also from the judging criteria: “Merely holding a dominant position(s) shall not be a primary factor in assessing dominance. What the fighter does with those positions is what must be assessed.” Makhachev holding a dominant position does not mean he wins the round. Even if he was in full mount, the most dominant position in MMA, if he did nothing with it he loses that round.
silva was a middleweight being 43 years old and suffered a leg snap. I'm certain that he was not in his prime in that Adasanya fight. Age is a super important factor for fighting because of loss of fast twich muscle fibers as we age.

but, couldn't we ascertain that Andersen Silva was no longer in his prime when he fought Adesanya? he had 1 win, 4 losses and one nc in his prior 6 fights going into the Adesanya fight (not to mention the leg break)? Prior to that had won 17 in a row (the first was outside the ufc) 15 of which were finishes.
Ive watched that fight so many times. It was a close fight but i still feel Islam won 3 out if 5 rounds. The judges got this one right nothing controversial about it

Volk only won a few moments of round 3 and a minute in round 5 but even then all those shots werent landing as much as it looked/sounded originally.
@Dantes230 I haven't thought about that, but it does make sense. Especially the 49-46 card. When I watched it the first time, I thought Islam won. When I watched it the 2nd time, I thought it was a coin flip. When I watched it the 3rd time and paid very close attention, I gave a slight edge to Volk in round 2. It wasn't a robbery, but it's not "end of story". Plus that would make the build up for a second fight boring af if people viewed it that way.

With Anderson - after his leg break his kicking and general aggression were not the same. That is why so many look an that fight with Izzy and think the Silva who took on Weidman would have beaten Izzy (as there fight was close, years later, post leg break). Im aussie and dont believe volk did enough to secure that win. Yes he broke islam in the 5th rnd but needed that knock down in the 3rd. Volk got stopped coming in too may times and islam defending the octagon circle and takedowns where big for him to convince the judges unfortunately. Yes we need to just deal with it and hopefully volk gets another shot. Hes proved too much and i dont see it a an "L" ever. I think my argument against Volk being the p4p is that he weighed 1-2lbs more than Islam in the actual fight or atleast that's wat some reports say since Islam only had 12hrs to rehydrate while Volk didn't have to rehydrate that much, and if u wanna bring Islam's height into this I also think Volk has some significant genetic advantages, his stocky build helps with his take down defence, his thick neck and his reach was just by a bit longer than Islam's.
We are very lucky to have a rare opportunity to watch two guys in their prime, the N#1 P4P and N#2 P4P, go against each other. We were all winners from that fight. There was no robbery. It could have gone either way and it was still going to be ok. It is very difficult to score a close fight, so there should be no ill will against the judges. Personally, I thought it was a draw (I gave Volk 2 and 5, and I thought the 3rd was very even). With that being said, it is okay to have an opinion, and I love hearing how people scored the fight and why. I liked Rogan's view and his school fight analogy, and coach Kavanagh's opinion, who said that he: 'always weighs later rounds more heavily than earlier ones. I ask myself who would survive a no-time/rule encounter.'
When you look into the stats of the fight more you will realise why Makhachev won, landing 4 takedowns out of 7, outstriking in several rounds , only rounds you can give volk is 5 and maybe 1 of the first 3

Takedowns need to be divided into two different categories like striking is. Significant takedowns vs Stale takedowns Significant takedowns would include more damage, submission attempts Whereas Stale takedowns would be less damage, lacking submission attempts, generally just doing the "hold n pray" Thus helping to eliminate much confusion for judges, fans, athletes alike within the sport
They technically do this now. Islam was given rd 4 because he had Volks back for the entirety of the takedown and was in serious danger of a RNC the whole time. Meaning, Islam was closer to finishing Volk than vice versa for the majority of the round.

It brings more technicality into the actual judging of the fights.. they can't just be like "whelp, it's on ground and he has control or doesn't".. instead they have to get the details 3. It forces the fighters to push their own pace within the ground game realm as well as makes them as well become more technical The judging overall is done pretty good. Yet even just looking at Yan v Sterling then Yan v O'Malley we see discrepancies in how ground game is viewed per each judge but without it (paper written and broken down)

I’d say 32-34 is prime. 28 is probably around your physical prime but mentally, you’re more prepared by 32-34 so the slight diminish in physical ability is worth the trade off for experience and technique

Islam won the fight 3-2. I dont think there is any question about that, other than arguing about 4-1 or 3-2. Volk said himself that he didnt go hard enough early enough, and that cost him the fight. Once Volk destroys the nobody hes fighting next, the guy who hasnt fought any of the top guys, hopefully he moves up properly and challenges Islam.
What about those occasions where the rules of the match weren't fully understood and the person accidentally tapped in the last round after winning the previous 4? I think we can all agree a championship asterisk should be in place for these occurrences.
If UFC don't do the Volk vs Islam rematch early next year that's a massive mistake on their part. Everyone wants to see that rematch. Izzy barely threw a single punch in 5 rounds vs Strickland, yet Dana was willing to give him an instant rematch and ignore Dricus... so why wouldn't Volk get one asap given how close that fight actually was? Mind you I didn't see anyone asking to see Strickland vs Izzy again, all of the comments were agreeing with DC saying to move on. UFC is so inconsistent sometimes.

Anderson beat all the guys in his generation but couldn't beat the next generation and had he not fought Weidman twice, he would've got hammered by rockhold or Souza. Volk had 4 hard strikes he landed that round, Islam also landed 4 hard strikes, they are even on hard strikes landed with Islam landing 3 more strikes altogether.
I have round 3 as a pretty clear round for Islam, however, it can go to Volk depending on how much you want to value the inside leg kick Volk landed at 3:03 in Rd 3.
4-1 Islam on my scorecards, 3-2 Islam I think is acceptable, giving round 2 to Volk would be an actual robbery. Just for simplicities sake, I didn't include the takedowns Islam landed in those rounds, just going by strikes.

You leave out the fact that Volk dropped islam round 2 so you have to give him that round. You also have to give Volk round 4 by the judging criteria. Round 3 I can see islam winning.

It's unclear in real-time because of the angle but they do a slow-motion replay at the end of the round and it's clear that Volk is pressuring Islam, as Islam backs up he trips against the fence. They show the angle in the slow motion, Volk misses by a mile. Also Islam is clearly falling before Volk's punch even makes it anywhere near Islam's head, just follow the feet and you'll see.
Regardless, Volk does a play-by-play on his own channel and makes no mention of a knockdown in rd 2 and doesn't even acknowledge the slip, meanwhile he acknowledges Islam's 'counter 2' which was the most impactful strike of the round.
As far as round 4, I'm not an expert on the specific rules, I know people throw out effective grappling etc. but I'm not going to pretend to be an expert. It is however, 1 of the 3 rounds that has unanimous consensus that Islam won which includes media, analysts, Volk himself & Volk's coaches.

If you slow the round 2 knockdown down, the way you can tell the punch completely connected is that Islam’s ear indented. The punch landed to Islam’s ear and part of Volk’s fist landed behind it, causing islam to temporarily lose balance since the punch hit the cerebellum. Yes it wasn’t the strongest knockdown in the world but it was the biggest strike of that round for sure, and since the round outside of that was only a slight edge to Islam, you have to give Volk the round. If the judges didn’t have instant replay, I can understand. If they did have instant replay then they are corrupt.
As for why Volk won round 4:
Why did Volk win round 4?
According to the unified rules of MMA:
“It shall be noted that a successful takedown is not merely a changing of position, but the establishment of an attack from the use of the takedown. Top and bottom position fighters are assessed more on the impactful/effective result of their actions, more so than their position.”
Therefore Islam’s takedown doesn’t even really count, since he did 0 with it. Also there’s no way you can argue Islam did more from top than Volk did from bottom.
Also from the judging criteria:
“. Impact shall also be assessed when a fighter‟s actions, using striking and/or grappling, lead to a diminishing of their opponents‟ energy, confidence, abilities and spirit.”
Who had the higher spirits that round, and was revving up the crowd? It was Volk. Makhachev was looking at the clock and wincing at pain whenever Volk landed.
Also from the judging criteria:
“Merely holding a dominant position(s) shall not be a primary factor in assessing dominance. What the fighter does with those positions is what must be assessed.”
Makhachev holding a dominant position does not mean he wins the round. Even if he was in full mount, the most dominant position in MMA, if he did nothing with it he loses that round.
silva was a middleweight being 43 years old and suffered a leg snap. I'm certain that he was not in his prime in that Adasanya fight. Age is a super important factor for fighting because of loss of fast twich muscle fibers as we age.

With Anderson - after his leg break his kicking and general aggression were not the same. That is why so many look an that fight with Izzy and think the Silva who took on Weidman would have beaten Izzy (as there fight was close, years later, post leg break). Im aussie and dont believe volk did enough to secure that win. Yes he broke islam in the 5th rnd but needed that knock down in the 3rd. I think my argument against Volk being the p4p is that he weighed 1-2lbs more than Islam in the actual fight or atleast that's wat some reports say since Islam only had 12hrs to rehydrate while Volk didn't have to rehydrate that much, and if u wanna bring Islam's height into this I also think Volk has some significant genetic advantages, his stocky build helps with his take down defence, his thick neck and his reach was just by a bit longer than Islam's.

We are very lucky to have a rare opportunity to watch two guys in their prime, the N#1 P4P and N#2 P4P, go against each other. We were all winners from that fight. There was no robbery. It could have gone either way and it was still going to be ok. It is very difficult to score a close fight, so there should be no ill will against the judges. Personally, I thought it was a draw (I gave Volk 2 and 5, and I thought the 3rd was very even). With that being said, it is okay to have an opinion, and I love hearing how people scored the fight and why. I liked Rogan's view and his school fight analogy, and coach Kavanagh's opinion, who said that he: 'always weighs later rounds more heavily than earlier ones. I ask myself who would survive a no-time/rule encounter.'
When you look into the stats of the fight more you will realise why Makhachev won, landing 4 takedowns out of 7, outstriking in several rounds , only rounds you can give volk is 5 and maybe 1 of the first 3

Takedowns need to be divided into two different categories like striking is.
Significant takedowns vs Stale takedowns
Significant takedowns would include more damage, submission attempts
Whereas Stale takedowns would be less damage, lacking submission attempts, generally just doing the "hold n pray"
Thus helping to eliminate much confusion for judges, fans, athletes alike within the sport
They technically do this now. Islam was given rd 4 because he had Volks back for the entirety of the takedown and was in serious danger of a RNC the whole time. Meaning, Islam was closer to finishing Volk than vice versa for the majority of the round.

The judging overall is done pretty good.
Yet even just looking at Yan v Sterling then Yan v O'Malley we see discrepancies in how ground game is viewed per each judge but without it (paper written and broken down)

I’d say 32-34 is prime. 28 is probably around your physical prime but mentally, you’re more prepared by 32-34 so the slight diminish in physical ability is worth the trade off for experience and technique

If UFC don't do the Volk vs Islam rematch early next year that's a massive mistake on their part. Everyone wants to see that rematch. Izzy barely threw a single punch in 5 rounds vs Strickland, yet Dana was willing to give him an instant rematch and ignore Dricus... so why wouldn't Volk get one asap given how close that fight actually was? Mind you I didn't see anyone asking to see Strickland vs Izzy again, all of the comments were agreeing with DC saying to move on. UFC is so inconsistent sometimes.

the bias is obvious. If Islam went up to 170 and took rounds off the champ, whoever it is, and still lost, who would be calling Islam p4p because of that? It is a credit to Islam that he is considered so formidible that if somebody who used to weigh over 200, and who weighed the same going into the octogon should be p4p just for taking rounds off him. people are acting like Volk had any physical attribute whatsoever that gave him a disadvantage. he did not. his height and stockiness was an advantage, because it helped his defensive grappling. he had a reach advantage, and if he was lighter than Makhachev it was not by much.
This Izzy vs Anderson argument is biased... Anderson beat all the guys in his generation but couldn't beat the next generation and had he not fought Weidman twice, he would've got hammered by rockhold or Souza.
Izzy hasn't beaten everyone in his own generation. Anderson is still very good, I don't think whether he was in his prime or not has anything to do with it

people are acting on emotion not logic. it was a great fight and competitive but not a robbery (volk said so himself) and honestly after watching it again many times - objectivity, w/sound, w/out sound, multiple camera angles… it’s hard to justify giving volk 2 rounds. 1,2,and 4 went to Makhachev (for sure) the 3rd was close, (I originally gave to volk), but after repeat viewings i gave to Islam. so please people, judge without your bias and hate.
