  • In our last video on LR4 maintenance we visited the common timing chain ailment. This video we have something not quite as common, but it appears to be terminal by the amount of smoke.
    Let's dive in and see if it is a terminal diagnosis of bad head gaskets or if we luck out and it is something minor.

      Yes, I haven’t run into it on these at the same rate as we saw it on BMW’s. But for how inexpensive and easy they are to replace it is cheap insurance. It was impressive how much this one smoked at points, it completely blocked the road when it happened.

    Glad you could figure it out for cheap. I was given a 2002 Kia Sportage 4x4 from someone at church. They found out I didn't have a vehicle for 10 1/2 years. I was able to fix some things, but the whole underneath is rusted and ball joints giving out. When it does the death wobble, it will have to go. I'm thankful I've had for a year and a half and I could fix a few things for cheap also. God Bless

    I have a 2010 RR supercharged and I did the timing stuff about 70,000 miles ago. Ever since the coolant needs to be refilled every once in awhile. I have recently noticed alot of white smoke when I start it, smell coolant when I drive so I figured head gasket. I did the exhaust gas tester in the reservoir and fluid never turned yellow, I put dye in the fluid and don't see any leaks that accounts for Tha much fluid loss. I am at a loss as to where all this coolant is going.

    I just had these things replaced about 6 months ago but now it’s blowing out white smoke too & it’s giving me the restricted performance. It’s also going through coolant very fast. I really hope it’s not a blown head gasket 😢 can PCV valves break this fast?

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I mean that is possible depending on the quality of the replacement valve diaphragms. But if it is going through coolant that is not going to be caused by the PCV. So unless you also have a big external coolant leak I would be afraid of head gaskets.

      Didn’t run it long enough to check the consumption and did an oil change after fixing it. It will consume a good amount of oil if you let it go like that though as it is just sucking it from the crankcase into the combustion chamber.

      @@romantkachuk168 Haha. I knew that, was just saying a lot of places will replace the whole valve cover on engines that have this same style cap that clips on to the cover, even though Land Rover lists a separate part number. Some of the BMW’s that run the same style are “non replaceable”. Sucks. I’m biased, but I am a firm believer that you will get better service from a good independent shop for repairs once the factory warranty is up. But not everyone is going to have access to that depending on your area especially with Land Rovers.

    I changed my PCV on my LR3 4.4 just the other day, and just now blew out the biggest dirtiest thickest cloud of toxic smoke right in the middle of a big intersection sitting at a long light, i turned off the engine because the shame and smell were getting too much, it cleared up after going for a minute and seems ok now, but OMG WTF I wanta crush this thing, I just spent 10 hours and a few hundred bucks to replace a noisy left hub, first drive the annoying noise was still there!! turns out it was the backing plate all along, took that off, though the hub does feel better, FYI just returned from a 3000 mile trip, so who knows what caused the smoke??? a clogged cat? EGR valve, all fluids look great, level and clear????

      that is likely to be the exhaust boxes clearing out bevause you've been using it at lot revs in town and the boxes dont get hot. go on the highwy ast high speed and dro the gears so the revs go up. keep it at 3000rpm for about 10 mins and it will clear out the boxes. these arent mall crawlers, they are long journey heavy load vehicles...
