Lukas' Seize the Grey wins in Preakness Stakes upset with young jockey; horse has over 2,500 owners

The winner of this year's Preakness takes home about $1.2 million. After Seize the Grey won the race on Saturday, that prize money will be divvied up between its more than 2500 owners.

Why do people who don't have horse owning money buy a "stake" in a horse? With 2500 owners, they'll be lucky to get $500.
