As the last track on the last true album in their repertoire, this is essentially Pink Floyd's farewell/swan song, reflecting back on three decades, and on the uncertain future ahead, lamenting so many regrets and losses, but there's that hunger that's still unsatisfied...
" High Hopes " is a song by English rock band Pink Floyd, composed by guitarist David Gilmour with lyrics by Gilmour and Polly Samson . It is the closing track on their fourteenth studio album, The Division Bell (1994), and was released as the second single from the album on 17 October 1994.
This album is so underrated among PF fans. I'm just opposite. I think from this album and newer, pf sound matured. Like a fine wine. This is my favorite. it's been in my single CD player in the bedroom for almost 10 years straight untouched not ever ejected.
I'm listing PF 32 years and Division Bell is also my favourite. In 90s this song was everywhere and I don't like this then. But now... I discovered again.
I became a PF fan recently within the past 6 months. I started out with Dark Side and The Wall of course, and I love them. Still delving into Meddle and Momentary Lapse of Reason, but Division Bell just hits a special place with me. Gilmour’s era is just so pleasant to listen to.
I started listening to Pink Floyd relatively late, but they are my favorite band for thirty years and "The Division Bell" was the first album I bought. Then "Dark Side of The Moon", "Live at Pompeii" and the others. "The Division Bell" remains one of my favorites, even if my favorite Floydian song of all is "Echoes", which is not part of the album and belongs to a very different period musically. But I like all the evolutionary stages of Pink Floyd, except maybe the time with Sid Barrett. But it may be that in the future I will come to fully appreciate that too.
It's always nice to see someone discover Pink Floyd for the first time. Their music is truly timeless and the recordings are of remarkable quality considering when they were recorded.
Is your favorite like “and there’s someone in my head but it’s not me” there’s a lot of great lines in that song that one just stands out to me every time I listen
You're not wrong Dave I saw Floyd at Earls court 1974 Dark Side, ever since then I've been a fan but Pulse although I regret not getting a chance to go has to be their best outing & Numb is still for me the best E guitar solo ever by anyone. Lyrics? Mother has to be up there along with Welcome to the Machine although Machine really works best if listened to with good headphones for the best separation. Most songs Floyd have ever put out have a deeper meaning , Except perhaps Arnold Layne and a few others
Pink Floyd has been my favorite band ever since eighth grade, when my older brother let me hear Dark Side of the Moon on vinyl for the first time. I've bought or downloaded every album I could find over the years. No two albums sound quite the same, but they all have a certain kind of sound that is unmistakably Pink Floyd.
@@FortWorthFabian I'd suggest the recent 2019 remix of the concert film as it has far more of Gilmour on the console steel guitar at the end than the 1994 original. It's here: th-cam.com/video/LiyxHJw_oG0/w-d-xo.html
Pink Floyd has been my favorite band for decades, thanks to their marriage of music and lyrics. There are other great musicians and other great lyricists but few consistently put the two together as devastatingly.
Heard the division bell for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I really think the album is very good, but when I got to high hopes it was just on a different level, pure emotion! left me crying like a baby One of the best from PF for sure!
@@silviodante6792 yeah, i noticed that too... it's awesome. I recently went looking for the video to watch it again and couldn't find it. Do you have a link?
@@ilovetovape722 well now that you said that, I went to look for the one that I watched not even a month ago and all they had was the live version with a still shot instead of the actual video.

Catch roger waters "this is not a drill" tour next year. she is the original bassist from floyd. I seen him on the us and them tour in st louis a few years back. Best time of my young life!
The Live at Pompeii concert, 1972?, is some amazing pre Dark Side sets that get overlooked a lot. If you check it out look for One of These Days, and Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun
The albums after the final cut are all the product of David and Nick's collaboration and a bit of Richards influence. Such amazing material, makes you wonder what would have happened if Roger was on them as well.
Mason had very little overall input in reality, he didn't even play drums on all the tracks even though he along with Wright, Gilmour and Pratt spent a couple of weeks coming up with material that was then honed down over more time and production, Wright has 5 credits on The Division Bell.
If Roger was there, this masterpiece would never have been created. Look at the last albums he was on, also his solo work. He was going in a completely different direction. After he left, Dave Gilmour and Rick Wright were able to explore far more melodic territory. It's still clearly Floyd but with Daves' gorgeous guitar work and Ricks' ethereal keyboards, it another level!
You are so lucky. You are at the beginning of an incredible journey and won't be disappointed. They produced so many incredible songs like this, too many to list here. Enjoy your musical education. They are worlds apart from other bands. The live shows are the benchmarks that other bands can only dream of.
Actually "high hopes" is a sarcastic way they use to show how you lose the greener grass for high hopes in the future. High hopes that never happen and in fact you were truly happy in your past but too focused in your "high hopes" in the future. And then you realize that, surrounded by your friends in your youth, the grass was greener... As older you get, this song crushes you more. Welcome to Pink Floyd man...
Great reaction dude! As an "older" Brit who grew up listening to Floyd I would strongly advise working through the album Dark Side of the Moon in order. Its a masterpiece! Word of warning its a concept album where tracks transition straight into each other, so to avoid awkward cuts / breaks its best done in order. Track 1 is a really short intro taking you straight into track 2 and the rest of the album. If you want to see the guys "back in the day" definitely check out 1972 Echoes live at Pompeii where the guys play in an empty Roman Amphitheater with no audience. It's a long track even when it's cut in two, but you get to see the guys and the kit used. Oh and a mind blowing instrumental! 😊
Welcome to being a Pink Floyd lover. I have had the rare honor of seeing them live four times in concert. They, in my opinion, are (were?) the greatest rock band in history. You are in the process of being "Floyded"!!! LOL High Hopes was written by David Gilmour, (lead vocals, and guitar), and one of the original members going back to 1966. I've been a Pink Floyd fan since 1971, I was 15 years old at the time, I'm 64 now. Pink Floyd is a legendary, iconic, British Rock band from London formed in 1965, they have sold more than 250 million albums world wide. They are the GOAT of Progressive Rock, and some, many, believe thy are the GOAT of Rock bands ever,... period. There are so many great things about Pink Floyd, it's impossible to discuss them all, but one of those great things are their live performances,.... they are legendary! I've seen them twice and both times it was an electrifying and inspiring experience! You've just started your Floyd experience and have many more great Pink Floyd songs to hear, and see. And I do mean SEE, because they put on a phenomenal light show that is in perfect time with the music being played. One of the Pink Floyd shows I attended was The Wall Concert in February of 1980, at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale NY, Long Island. It's quite impossible, here, to do justice to the enormity of trying to describe The Wall performances, so I suggest you do a search of The Wall Concerts to get an idea of the magnitude of these incredible performances! So having said that, I'd like to recommend you react to Comfortably Numb from The Pink Floyd Pulse Concert in 1994. Even if you've reacted to the studio version of the song, the Pulse performance is incredible and more than worthy to see as well as hear!
