Just moved from Saskatchewan to Mission BC. I got a lot to learn out here with the different ways to fish and different species, very excited to learn how to fish the rivers and catch some coho. Thanks for the videos hopefully helps speed up the learning period.
Here's what happenes when you show up on the Vedder with spinning gear: A bunch of drunk old dudes with $1000 custom centerpins will laugh at you for being an amateur... and then you'll catch twice as many fish as them.
It's the same in this area. centerpin drifting for steelhead with similar gear laugh at other people and bully them out of "their" spots. it's ridiculous.
Use whatever legal method you enjoy and are comfortable with. Some days I like to spin, other days I like to pin, and the baitcaster comes out frequently too. It really doesn't matter what other people think.
Fishing with Rod I live in a very shallow Creek and I don't know what to use cuz I usually use spoons an estuary and I don't really know what I should use this is very shallow no bait down though
Yes, I do not fish for salmon, just Trout. I went fishing once with 2lbs spincast. There were a few men there laughing at me. One said "There is no way you are catching any fish with that gear here son, we've been fishing this whole area for 2 hours now with flies, nothing biting." I just shook my head. In about 30 minutes I went and showed them my catch of at that time 7 big keepers. They could not believe it, and I left laughing
My buddies & I used to do shoreline spin-casting for salmon around southern tip of Van Island & we would "follow the fish" around from spot to spot as the salmon were coming in a few wks before spawning timeline Easter Sunday one buddy caught a 35 lb.14oz. Spring...now *that* was a smiley luv the show (keep on fishin'🤗
I love coho, never fished for them in a river. We had a lake that use to stock them, awesome fighters! That Vedder River looks amazing. Great Info, maybe someday I'll get up there and fish it.

Hey Rod, I just moved to northern NY last year from Australia, and fished the Saranac River for landlocked Atlantic Salmon during their spawning run from Lake Champlain. Caught my very first one; a 26 inch long male. Plus two 24 inch long spawning Brown Trout. Lots of fun. Trout season opens here April 1st. I will be using salmon eggs in the Great Chazy River near the border with Canada. When the ice goes out, I plan to go for Lake Trout using spoons.

You have a great sense of humor and an intense reverence for all the sport. Still a good showing of salmon (coho) swimming by Sooke on Van.Island westcoast. I rember seeing one on the cleaning table about 12 yrs. ago that weighed in at 30 lbs.That is biggest coho I saw and About 10 yrs back I caught one 20lbs. The 5-10 pounders taste best! CHEERS from Sooke B.C.

One of the most helpful videos regarding salmon fishing in BC!!! I will be making a long journey from Cyprus to BC ( Roadtrip from Vancouver to Banff) for a couple of weeks. I want to combine the raodtrip with fishing along rivers etc. Is August/September a good time to fish ? Also what species can you catch during that time ?
If you are looking to do some salmon fishing like this video, then September and October are much better around Vancouver. August however, is a beautiful month for driving from Vancouver to Banff. You have quite a few options along the way, to stop and catch some trout at some rivers or lakes. :)
hey rod, what knot do you use to tie the braid to the flourocarbon and how long of a floro leader do you have on? also is a size 2500 spinning reel enough for chum salmon, i was looking to get a shimano sahara but im not shure what size I should get. Thanks
Hi Wayne, I use an improved albright knot to connect my braid to fluorocarbon. My leader is usually between 6 and 10 feet long. There is a video tutorial by Kitty on here which shows you a different connection knot as well, she uses a loop to loop connection. A 2500 spinning reel is perfect for coho salmon (I use 2500 Stradic CI4+ and Sustain, but do have a Sahara 2500 as a backup and it works just as well). My 2500 has handled quite a few chum salmon, so it's doable. With that said, if you plan to primarily target chum salmon more than coho with it, I'd go with a 3000.
How do you keep a 1/4oz spoon in the strike zone on this fast moving water? Doesn't the current just sweep the lure parallel to the bank within few seconds?
The water I fish in is not really that fast. I only fish in slower water in between the faster parts of the river, which is where coho salmon like to hold. To keep my lure in the strike zone, I adjust my retrieve speed and the angle of the rod.
Hello Rod. I've returned to fishing after a four year hiatus. Looking for info, I came across your channel and have really enjoyed it and appreciate all the great info. I watched this video and now I really want to go fish for Coho. I have a question about line strength. I just got an Okuma SST and am pairing it to a Pflueger spinning reel. I'm going to put braid on it for a main line and fluorocarbon for the leader. In your video you mention that the rod you are using is rated for 6 to 10lb test line. You put 15lb braid on your reel. My Okuma rod is 8'6" and rated for 6 to 12lb line. I was going to put 12lb test braid on my reel. I'm going to keep this rod in my vehicle as a general fish for anything rod. Fresh water only. I live in Maple Ridge so anywhere between here and Hope. Or in to the interior during vacations. Is it okay to exceed the rating on the rod? I do have a big Salmon rod rated to 20lbs with a level wind reel. But its specialized. I want this Okuma for general use for trout mostly but also for Salmon when the opportunity arises. Is it okay to put 15lb braid on it? Would I have to be concerned with the rod breaking before the line? I realize I could put a 6 to 12lb leader on that main line but would I need to be concerned about the rod breaking before the line if I used 15lb leader and main line for large Salmon? After seeing you catch those Coho, I cant wait for the season to open. 😱
Hi Jason, generally it's not recommended that you use lines that are heavier than what's recommended on the rod. That said, we like to use 15lb test braided main on the 6 to 10lb rod and not afraid of breaking the rod because the leader we use is usually lighter and within that rating. Sometimes I go up to 12lb or even 15lb test fluorocarbon leader, but unless you are very familiar with your rod and know how to play the fish with it, it's not really recommended. The reason that we use heavier line isn't to catch bigger fish, but it's to avoid abrasion on the line when you fish in snaggy areas etc.

@@jasonforester4572 You too! With the fluoro, I would just use 8 or above. 4 and 6lb would be so thin that any sudden rip from a salmon would snap it especially if there is abrasion damage on the line, which often happens if you are dragging a lure in rivers.
Jason Forester Hey man, I fish to different rods for coho. One is 9’ 8-15 med/light with a 3000 size shimano reel on it. I have 20lb braid on it with 15lb flouro for leader. Ive used it for everything from bait fishing for trout in the interior when the fish arent co-operating to coho/pinks/chum down here in the valley. 2nd rod is my twitching rod which Is 8’6” 8-17 med and I have an okuma 35 size reel on it with 30lb braid tied straight to the jig. Both setups work perfect and never had a worry about breaking them as i have never broke a rod in my life. Your okuma sst with 15lb braid and a 12lb flouro leader will be perfect for coho! Get out there and catch some fish!! Good luck!
@@FishingwithRod got a bunch of mag lip plugs and crankbaits might take them to the lower fraser in search of some early coho. I'll let you know how it works out
The only salmon fishing permitted in the next two weeks is pink salmon fishing. You cannot target, this includes catch and release, the other salmon species. After September 18th, all salmon fishing is closed, including catch and release, until November 1st. After November 1st, some salmon fishing opportunities, such as coho and chum salmon, will be announced. These regulations for the Fraser River have been in place for a few years now.
Rod, I’ve been contemplating getting braided line . Right now I’m using maxima 20 lb Ultragreen for float fishing at the Vedder. I’ve read reviews and people say that the powerpro snaps easy at the knots . Is this the case for you ? I’ve been reading about the powerpro super 8 slick v2. What are your thoughts ? Awesome channel and tips by the way.
For float fishing, I would totally stick to Maxima for your main line. For the PowerPro braid main to fluorocarbon leader connection, I do have problem (snapping) with it once awhile, but that's usually from pulling it out of a snag and putting quite a bit of force on it. I like to use 15lb PowerPro to 12lb Seaguar fluorocarbon. I find that if the fluoro leader is any lighter than that, it breaks more easily.
Hey Rod thanks for the informative video. I see that you use more metal and metal red striped spoons than any kind of color combination- Is that what coho prefers to chase or just colour really doesn't matter. I have metal and blue. Do I have a chance to catch or I should go shopping? At min.12:41, which exit of Hwy 1 is exactly this spot? It looks like the exit 104 at Rd,#3 Wilson Rd. It would be nice to Know. Thanks.
The colours are really based on personal preferences and experiences. Blue works for many people. I just have always had success with my silver/brass/copper + orange/chartreuse/pink combinations. As for locations, you can catch coho salmon throughout the entire river, jsut depends on the water conditions which favour some spots over others at any given time.
I have a dedicated lure rod for salmon/steelhead with braided line. Had a blood knot to floro leader, but had bad knot smacking line guides each cast. A local recommended just using a snap swivel, with individual leaders for various lures. Right now I have all separate leaders with perfection loops on each one to connect to the swivel. Not sure I like it.... What do you recommend for a braid to leader rig, for jigs/spinners/spoons, that is convenient for changing lures while fishing?
The swivel option does not work for me as my fluorocarbon leader is generally 5 to 10 feet long. A swivel would impede your ability to cast since you can't reel the line all the way in. The knot that I like to use to connect my braided main line to the fluorocarbon leader is actually an improved Albright knot.
You should be able to find fish throughout the entire Chilliwack/Vedder River. I would stop by Fred's Custom Tackle, and pick up a map which has a list of spots recommended.
Hi Simone, I use an Improved Albright knot. There is a video tutorial on here showing another connection knot done by Kitty as well. Search "lure setup for salmon" and it should pop up in the channel.
Rod I'd just like to thank you for your videos and outstanding tips. We fish similar rivers in the lower mainland. Where can i purchase the 9 foot shimano rod. What lbs is the braid line?And does the braid line freeze up in the winter? Thank you
Thanks Dave! The 9' Clarus spinning rods can be found at all the Shimano retailers. Fred's in Abbotsford and Chilliwack has them. First Light Fish and Tackle in Burnaby has them too. I use 15lb PowerPro braided for my main line. It does NOT work that great below freezing in the winter. Once you get ice on braided line, it can be a big mess if you are not careful.
Yep you too! FYI, that particular Shimano Clarus model in this video has been discontinued (I was quite sad about that), but you should still be able to find some left over inventories at those stores. The new Clarus models are a little heavier (8 to 12lb), but still suitable for coho. G.Loomis has an E6X model which has similar specs to this rod, but it is twice as expensive (beautiful rod though). Just a few options to consider.
Captain Ron Thanks Ron. I usually use about 6 feet of fluorocarbon as my leader, but have used as short as 3 or 4 feet without really seeing a difference. I tie it directly to the braided main.
Fishing with Rod . thank you for the information Rod. I’m always a little intimidated by al of the guys on the Vedder. I can never seem to get away from it. I just retired and I will be able to go mid week but it doesn’t really seem to make a difference. I went out once last October mid week and it was still a gong show...lol. Ron
Ron, my recommendation for anyone who wishes to fish the Vedder during peak salmon season is to just walk, explore and find spots that are not crowded which do exist. Certain times of the day are also not as busy as others. Quite often the end of a Sunday can be the best time for fishing with nobody around. Good luck!
What would you say the average Coho size is? The internet says 6-12 lbs, but at least in the Puget Sound area, fish above 8lbs seem less common than fish between 4-6 lbs
For the Chilliwack/Vedder River? On a good year, the average is between 6 and 8lb, but you'd see fish in the 10 to 15lb range at times for sure. On a bad year, I've seen almost all of the fish are 4 to 6lb. I find that people often overestimate. An 8lb fish are almost always called a 10lber.
@@FishingwithRod Haha yep. Pulled two 4.5 pounders out of Puget Sound yesterday and swore one was 6 pounds and one was 8. Pulled a ten pounder today that fought like a monster and was convinced it was 15
Awesome! You can catch salmon throughout the entire river, it just depends on how high or low the river is as I mentioned in the video. One spot can turn on and off as the river goes up and down. Rather than focusing on where exactly to go, it's best to pay attention to the level and see where the fish might be holding. :) Good luck!
I know you asked this 8 months ago and I hope you had success last season. I agree with what Rod said but one other thing to remember is that Coho really like slow water. In the Vedder, there are natural and man-made areas of the river which will have little current. Focus on these areas and look for Coho moving around.
Hey rod. Would you recommend any spots that would be good to throw a spoon or a jig. Having tried for coho using spoons yet and planing on it this October.
The river changes each year so runs are always different. I would walk and check out all the runs at the beginning of the season, and pick the ones which you are confident with and work on them regularly.
Hey@@FishingwithRod thanks again for everything you do - just watching this video before heading to some spin fishing at the Vedder. I caught fish using float fishing there but I prefer spin casting and find it more fun, but at the Vedder I always struggle finding good water for spinning. Usually if you see people float fishing a run, it means is no good for spinning and vice-versa. Obviously without giving out any spots, do you have any tips on where to focus the energy? i.e do you prefer the canal, mid river or upper river for this style of fishing, or you think it can be done in all 3 sections, is just about finding the right water? thanks again
Rod my man, after watching most of your videos, I got myself a pair of boots, wader, shimano clarus spinning rod, stradic CI4 2500 reel, a box of Gibbs crocs and cohos...got to vedder river this morning 5am parked at lickman, everyone was float fishing and catching fish....I lost 3 spoons in an hour snagging the bottom, no bite at all....look like an absolute idiot lol...to make the day worse, I ran over the rock at the car park, cracked the skirt and front door, probably gonna cost couple grand to fix lol.......this game is harder than I imagined
Sorry to hear about the car Wade! It's not easy that's for sure. There is bit of a learning curve when it comes to catching coho salmon, but once you get it, you should be able to get into fish consistently. Good luck!

The Clarus which I am using in this video is no longer being made unfortunately, and it's my favourite one. It's 9' long, rated light (6-10lb) and perfect for coho salmon. Currently, the next best Clarus model you can get is CSS86M2D or CSS96M2D, which is rated 8-12lb. The first one is 8'6", which is a little shorter than I like, the second one is 9'6". Also, the other good news is that G.Loomis has a E6X model which is very similar to the Clarus I'm using in this video. It is E6X 1082-2S STR, 9' long, rated 6-10lb. The retail price is just a bit more than the Clarus.
For my spinning setup, I have switched over to PowerPro for my main line, and Seaguar Fluorocarbon for my leader (about 6 to 10 feet of it at the end of the main line). This setup is a lot stiffer than just regular mono, no stretch on the line so I can feel more bites. The landing ratio has increased significantly too, the line has a lot to do with it, but also the hook choice has made a difference.
That's awesome. Yeah I tried mono back then n found it too stretchy, so I started using 20lb braid, was always wanting to try fluorocarbon, is the seaguar stronger than the ultragreen?
I do actually. I have my own preferences when it comes to hooks and I also tend to go one or two sizes smaller for the spoon than what comes with it. I use Owner single siwash spoon replacement hooks, usually size 1, sometimes size 2.

@@fishotherapyadventures Yep no problem. Good observation! There are lots of hook options out there and I have probably tried about ten different ones over the years until I found one which I really like. Sickle hooks are also nice too.
I go where I think the coho are at the given time. It’s always an educated guessing game and you just hope that based on water conditions, timing of the run, past experiences that you’d get it right more often than not.

"you don't need anything else" That's really nice but wishful thinking...What about a rag, file, knife, needle nose pliers, swivels, dual locks, extra leader line, matches/lighter, extra weights to get the lure down if needed, pencil/pen of marking fish on your punch cards, insect repellent, cell phone for locations and camera and light, lube for reels, Knife, etc. etc. Murphy's Law #5, if you don't take it with you, you're going to need it! I was always prepared and saved my ass many times but i've only been fishing for 56 years so what do i know?? LOL!!! But i do like your choice of lures.
Way to take my opinion out of context. Of course you should be prepared but keep in mind this is a put and take fishery which is within a short driving or walking distance to everything you need from a convenience store to tackle shop. Realistically, 80% of the items you listed are unnecessary when lure fishing for these salmon.

Line Jensen Hej Line, the Shimano spinning rod I’m using is 9’ long, or 2.7m. It’s rated for 6 to 10lb, or 3 to 5kg. The lure weight recommended is up to 3/8oz I think, which is more than enough for all the salmon spoons or spinners that you’d use. I’m not a fishing guide, but I produce these videos and host a large website that markets fishing businesses in BC. Fishing with Rod Thats a heavy rod, we use gram here in Denmark, but I looked it up, 84-224gram, here it will be used for pike or cod. I saw the video with Carl and Alex, thats why I thourght that you were a guide. I love your video
Line Jensen No no, up to 3/8oz not 3 to 8oz lol... so roughly 12 grams. This is considered a light rod and has a fairly slow blank. Most of the rods used in Denmark for sea trout on the beach are a little faster than this one I find. I’ve used this rod fishing for sea trout in Denmark a few times, works pretty well. 🙂
I'm in DK right now actually, but didn't bother bringing my rods this time. Usually I fish the beaches around Køge, and further south around Holtug, as well as the West side south of Ordrup næs, and sometimes the north side around Vejby Strand. I also do some lake fishing around Ballerup since that's where I am at when I'm here.
I from Harrison Hot Springs and I wondering for the best technique for fishing for trout in a creek and in Harrison Lake and rivers small I don't know what to use I use spoons or spinners or eggs or worms or Jig what do you think where help me alot
Hi tristan, a 1/8oz Gibbs Croc spoon is what I like to cast with for Harrison cutthroat trout. You can also just float fish with worms, eggs, etc (if there isn't a bait ban). Get yourself a jar or two of the Pautzke Bait single eggs, they come in pretty handy. :)
David Junsay The number of salmon you can keep per day depends on what species you are targeting, where you are fishing and when you are fishing. To get this information, you’re best to check the regulations.
1) I'm sure it was probably just a slip of the tongue, but at 6:12 you said "spincasting," and of course you know that is a spinning setup. 2) Independent test show that straight mono line is more abrasion resistant than "abrasion resistant" fluorocarbon and a 2 1/2 foot leader doesn't stretch enough to mention. 3) If you want to catch fish, uses a jig/twist retrieve with a spinning lure and you will get just as many hits as with a twitching jig and the fish won't chase your lure, just hit it; try it.
Lazydrifter The main reason we use the net is not so much for landing the fish. Because there are wild fish which need to be released, we like to net all our fish with the soft mesh net so they can be kept in the water when being identified and released without being dragged onto the bank when required to.
@@FishingwithRod oh for sure. I didnt put that in my post when on a river you cant keep unmarked fish it's best to net. I wasn't trying to bash you I respect you and your fishing ethics. Fish on brother👍
i know 2 people, both charters, who ran tube jigs on trolling rigs. They caught a lot of fish that way, solid bright white, and now the stores don't sell that particular one any more. They've moved on to other lures but i'm sure there are similar tubes out there. Neither one was into bass fishing and didn't know common bass plastics so they called them tampons. hehe.

Too many fish for you perhaps. There is a daily limit on how many fish you are allowed to retain, so as long as you are staying within that limit, nobody should have a problem with it.

Still a good showing of salmon (coho) swimming by Sooke on Van.Island westcoast. I rember seeing one on the cleaning table about 12 yrs. ago that weighed in at 30 lbs.That is biggest coho I saw and About 10 yrs back I caught one 20lbs. The 5-10 pounders taste best! CHEERS from Sooke B.C.

I will be making a long journey from Cyprus to BC ( Roadtrip from Vancouver to Banff) for a couple of weeks. I want to combine the raodtrip with fishing along rivers etc. Is August/September a good time to fish ? Also what species can you catch during that time ?
If you are looking to do some salmon fishing like this video, then September and October are much better around Vancouver. August however, is a beautiful month for driving from Vancouver to Banff. You have quite a few options along the way, to stop and catch some trout at some rivers or lakes. :)

hey rod, what knot do you use to tie the braid to the flourocarbon and how long of a floro leader do you have on? also is a size 2500 spinning reel enough for chum salmon, i was looking to get a shimano sahara but im not shure what size I should get. Thanks
Hi Wayne, I use an improved albright knot to connect my braid to fluorocarbon. My leader is usually between 6 and 10 feet long. There is a video tutorial by Kitty on here which shows you a different connection knot as well, she uses a loop to loop connection. A 2500 spinning reel is perfect for coho salmon (I use 2500 Stradic CI4+ and Sustain, but do have a Sahara 2500 as a backup and it works just as well). My 2500 has handled quite a few chum salmon, so it's doable. With that said, if you plan to primarily target chum salmon more than coho with it, I'd go with a 3000.

On a flowing stream, usually slightly upstream so the spoon would sink to the depth where you want it to be before you start retrieving.

How do you keep a 1/4oz spoon in the strike zone on this fast moving water? Doesn't the current just sweep the lure parallel to the bank within few seconds?
The water I fish in is not really that fast. I only fish in slower water in between the faster parts of the river, which is where coho salmon like to hold. To keep my lure in the strike zone, I adjust my retrieve speed and the angle of the rod.
Hello Rod. I've returned to fishing after a four year hiatus. Looking for info, I came across your channel and have really enjoyed it and appreciate all the great info.
I watched this video and now I really want to go fish for Coho. I have a question about line strength. I just got an Okuma SST and am pairing it to a Pflueger spinning reel. I'm going to put braid on it for a main line and fluorocarbon for the leader.
In your video you mention that the rod you are using is rated for 6 to 10lb test line. You put 15lb braid on your reel. My Okuma rod is 8'6" and rated for 6 to 12lb line. I was going to put 12lb test braid on my reel. I'm going to keep this rod in my vehicle as a general fish for anything rod. Fresh water only. I live in Maple Ridge so anywhere between here and Hope. Or in to the interior during vacations.
Is it okay to exceed the rating on the rod? I do have a big Salmon rod rated to 20lbs with a level wind reel. But its specialized. I want this Okuma for general use for trout mostly but also for Salmon when the opportunity arises. Is it okay to put 15lb braid on it? Would I have to be concerned with the rod breaking before the line? I realize I could put a 6 to 12lb leader on that main line but would I need to be concerned about the rod breaking before the line if I used 15lb leader and main line for large Salmon?

Hi Jason, generally it's not recommended that you use lines that are heavier than what's recommended on the rod. That said, we like to use 15lb test braided main on the 6 to 10lb rod and not afraid of breaking the rod because the leader we use is usually lighter and within that rating. Sometimes I go up to 12lb or even 15lb test fluorocarbon leader, but unless you are very familiar with your rod and know how to play the fish with it, it's not really recommended. The reason that we use heavier line isn't to catch bigger fish, but it's to avoid abrasion on the line when you fish in snaggy areas etc.

@@jasonforester4572 You too! With the fluoro, I would just use 8 or above. 4 and 6lb would be so thin that any sudden rip from a salmon would snap it especially if there is abrasion damage on the line, which often happens if you are dragging a lure in rivers.
Jason Forester Hey man, I fish to different rods for coho. One is 9’ 8-15 med/light with a 3000 size shimano reel on it. I have 20lb braid on it with 15lb flouro for leader. Ive used it for everything from bait fishing for trout in the interior when the fish arent co-operating to coho/pinks/chum down here in the valley. 2nd rod is my twitching rod which Is 8’6” 8-17 med and I have an okuma 35 size reel on it with 30lb braid tied straight to the jig. Both setups work perfect and never had a worry about breaking them as i have never broke a rod in my life. Your okuma sst with 15lb braid and a 12lb flouro leader will be perfect for coho! Get out there and catch some fish!! Good luck!

When I fish for salmon I like using a lighter rod than usual, so I won’t have that full control of the fish so that the battle in legendary.

Great, but just so you know, you cannot fish for coho salmon right now in the Fraser River. It will open for coho salmon fishing in November.

The only salmon fishing permitted in the next two weeks is pink salmon fishing. You cannot target, this includes catch and release, the other salmon species. After September 18th, all salmon fishing is closed, including catch and release, until November 1st. After November 1st, some salmon fishing opportunities, such as coho and chum salmon, will be announced. These regulations for the Fraser River have been in place for a few years now.

I’ve been contemplating getting braided line . Right now I’m using maxima 20 lb Ultragreen for float fishing at the Vedder. I’ve read reviews and people say that the powerpro snaps easy at the knots . Is this the case for you ? I’ve been reading about the powerpro super 8 slick v2. What are your thoughts ?

For float fishing, I would totally stick to Maxima for your main line. For the PowerPro braid main to fluorocarbon leader connection, I do have problem (snapping) with it once awhile, but that's usually from pulling it out of a snag and putting quite a bit of force on it. I like to use 15lb PowerPro to 12lb Seaguar fluorocarbon. I find that if the fluoro leader is any lighter than that, it breaks more easily.
Hey Rod thanks for the informative video. I see that you use more metal and metal red striped spoons than any kind of color combination- Is that what coho prefers to chase or just colour really doesn't matter. I have metal and blue. Do I have a chance to catch or I should go shopping? At min.12:41, which exit of Hwy 1 is exactly this spot? It looks like the exit 104 at Rd,#3 Wilson Rd. It would be nice to Know. Thanks.
The colours are really based on personal preferences and experiences. Blue works for many people. I just have always had success with my silver/brass/copper + orange/chartreuse/pink combinations. As for locations, you can catch coho salmon throughout the entire river, jsut depends on the water conditions which favour some spots over others at any given time.

I have a dedicated lure rod for salmon/steelhead with braided line. Had a blood knot to floro leader, but had bad knot smacking line guides each cast. A local recommended just using a snap swivel, with individual leaders for various lures. Right now I have all separate leaders with perfection loops on each one to connect to the swivel. Not sure I like it.... What do you recommend for a braid to leader rig, for jigs/spinners/spoons, that is convenient for changing lures while fishing?
The swivel option does not work for me as my fluorocarbon leader is generally 5 to 10 feet long. A swivel would impede your ability to cast since you can't reel the line all the way in. The knot that I like to use to connect my braided main line to the fluorocarbon leader is actually an improved Albright knot.

You should be able to find fish throughout the entire Chilliwack/Vedder River. I would stop by Fred's Custom Tackle, and pick up a map which has a list of spots recommended.

Thanks Dave! The 9' Clarus spinning rods can be found at all the Shimano retailers. Fred's in Abbotsford and Chilliwack has them. First Light Fish and Tackle in Burnaby has them too. I use 15lb PowerPro braided for my main line. It does NOT work that great below freezing in the winter. Once you get ice on braided line, it can be a big mess if you are not careful.

Yep you too! FYI, that particular Shimano Clarus model in this video has been discontinued (I was quite sad about that), but you should still be able to find some left over inventories at those stores. The new Clarus models are a little heavier (8 to 12lb), but still suitable for coho. G.Loomis has an E6X model which has similar specs to this rod, but it is twice as expensive (beautiful rod though). Just a few options to consider.

Captain Ron Thanks Ron. I usually use about 6 feet of fluorocarbon as my leader, but have used as short as 3 or 4 feet without really seeing a difference. I tie it directly to the braided main.

I just retired and I will be able to go mid week but it doesn’t really seem to make a difference. I went out once last October mid week and it was still a gong show...lol. Ron
Ron, my recommendation for anyone who wishes to fish the Vedder during peak salmon season is to just walk, explore and find spots that are not crowded which do exist. Certain times of the day are also not as busy as others. Quite often the end of a Sunday can be the best time for fishing with nobody around. Good luck!

What would you say the average Coho size is? The internet says 6-12 lbs, but at least in the Puget Sound area, fish above 8lbs seem less common than fish between 4-6 lbs
For the Chilliwack/Vedder River? On a good year, the average is between 6 and 8lb, but you'd see fish in the 10 to 15lb range at times for sure. On a bad year, I've seen almost all of the fish are 4 to 6lb. I find that people often overestimate. An 8lb fish are almost always called a 10lber.
@@FishingwithRod Haha yep. Pulled two 4.5 pounders out of Puget Sound yesterday and swore one was 6 pounds and one was 8. Pulled a ten pounder today that fought like a monster and was convinced it was 15

Awesome! You can catch salmon throughout the entire river, it just depends on how high or low the river is as I mentioned in the video. One spot can turn on and off as the river goes up and down. Rather than focusing on where exactly to go, it's best to pay attention to the level and see where the fish might be holding. :) Good luck!
I know you asked this 8 months ago and I hope you had success last season. I agree with what Rod said but one other thing to remember is that Coho really like slow water. In the Vedder, there are natural and man-made areas of the river which will have little current. Focus on these areas and look for Coho moving around.

Hey rod. Would you recommend any spots that would be good to throw a spoon or a jig. Having tried for coho using spoons yet and planing on it this October.
The river changes each year so runs are always different. I would walk and check out all the runs at the beginning of the season, and pick the ones which you are confident with and work on them regularly.

I caught fish using float fishing there but I prefer spin casting and find it more fun, but at the Vedder I always struggle finding good water for spinning. Usually if you see people float fishing a run, it means is no good for spinning and vice-versa. Obviously without giving out any spots, do you have any tips on where to focus the energy? i.e do you prefer the canal, mid river or upper river for this style of fishing, or you think it can be done in all 3 sections, is just about finding the right water? thanks again
Rod my man, after watching most of your videos, I got myself a pair of boots, wader, shimano clarus spinning rod, stradic CI4 2500 reel, a box of Gibbs crocs and cohos...got to vedder river this morning 5am parked at lickman, everyone was float fishing and catching fish....I lost 3 spoons in an hour snagging the bottom, no bite at all....look like an absolute idiot lol...to make the day worse, I ran over the rock at the car park, cracked the skirt and front door, probably gonna cost couple grand to fix lol.......this game is harder than I imagined
Sorry to hear about the car Wade! It's not easy that's for sure. There is bit of a learning curve when it comes to catching coho salmon, but once you get it, you should be able to get into fish consistently. Good luck!

I have a question for Rod, what action and power is your clarus? I'm not quite sure what action and power I should get. ( I am on the vedder river )
The Clarus which I am using in this video is no longer being made unfortunately, and it's my favourite one. It's 9' long, rated light (6-10lb) and perfect for coho salmon. Currently, the next best Clarus model you can get is CSS86M2D or CSS96M2D, which is rated 8-12lb. The first one is 8'6", which is a little shorter than I like, the second one is 9'6". Also, the other good news is that G.Loomis has a E6X model which is very similar to the Clarus I'm using in this video. It is E6X 1082-2S STR, 9' long, rated 6-10lb. The retail price is just a bit more than the Clarus.

For my spinning setup, I have switched over to PowerPro for my main line, and Seaguar Fluorocarbon for my leader (about 6 to 10 feet of it at the end of the main line). This setup is a lot stiffer than just regular mono, no stretch on the line so I can feel more bites. The landing ratio has increased significantly too, the line has a lot to do with it, but also the hook choice has made a difference.
That's awesome. Yeah I tried mono back then n found it too stretchy, so I started using 20lb braid, was always wanting to try fluorocarbon, is the seaguar stronger than the ultragreen?

Question Rod, do you change the hook from those spoons? If yes, which brand and type of hook u use?
I do actually. I have my own preferences when it comes to hooks and I also tend to go one or two sizes smaller for the spoon than what comes with it. I use Owner single siwash spoon replacement hooks, usually size 1, sometimes size 2.

I go where I think the coho are at the given time. It’s always an educated guessing game and you just hope that based on water conditions, timing of the run, past experiences that you’d get it right more often than not.

"you don't need anything else" That's really nice but wishful thinking...What about a rag, file, knife, needle nose pliers, swivels, dual locks, extra leader line, matches/lighter, extra weights to get the lure down if needed, pencil/pen of marking fish on your punch cards, insect repellent, cell phone for locations and camera and light, lube for reels, Knife, etc. etc. Murphy's Law #5, if you don't take it with you, you're going to need it! I was always prepared and saved my ass many times but i've only been fishing for 56 years so what do i know?? LOL!!! But i do like your choice of lures.
Way to take my opinion out of context. Of course you should be prepared but keep in mind this is a put and take fishery which is within a short driving or walking distance to everything you need from a convenience store to tackle shop. Realistically, 80% of the items you listed are unnecessary when lure fishing for these salmon.

Line Jensen Hej Line, the Shimano spinning rod I’m using is 9’ long, or 2.7m. It’s rated for 6 to 10lb, or 3 to 5kg. The lure weight recommended is up to 3/8oz I think, which is more than enough for all the salmon spoons or spinners that you’d use. I’m not a fishing guide, but I produce these videos and host a large website that markets fishing businesses in BC. Line Jensen No no, up to 3/8oz not 3 to 8oz lol... so roughly 12 grams. This is considered a light rod and has a fairly slow blank. Most of the rods used in Denmark for sea trout on the beach are a little faster than this one I find. I’ve used this rod fishing for sea trout in Denmark a few times, works pretty well. 🙂

I'm in DK right now actually, but didn't bother bringing my rods this time. Usually I fish the beaches around Køge, and further south around Holtug, as well as the West side south of Ordrup næs, and sometimes the north side around Vejby Strand. I also do some lake fishing around Ballerup since that's where I am at when I'm here.

Hi tristan, a 1/8oz Gibbs Croc spoon is what I like to cast with for Harrison cutthroat trout. You can also just float fish with worms, eggs, etc (if there isn't a bait ban). Get yourself a jar or two of the Pautzke Bait single eggs, they come in pretty handy. :)

1) I'm sure it was probably just a slip of the tongue, but at 6:12 you said "spincasting," and of course you know that is a spinning setup. 2) Independent test show that straight mono line is more abrasion resistant than "abrasion resistant" fluorocarbon and a 2 1/2 foot leader doesn't stretch enough to mention. 3) If you want to catch fish, uses a jig/twist retrieve with a spinning lure and you will get just as many hits as with a twitching jig and the fish won't chase your lure, just hit it; try it.
alot of the benefit of fluorocarbon is that it 'disappears' in the water, much less visible to fish than mono,

If you have a bank I lose less fish by just pulling them on the bank. When guys try to net my fish they seem to get off more often
Lazydrifter The main reason we use the net is not so much for landing the fish. Because there are wild fish which need to be released, we like to net all our fish with the soft mesh net so they can be kept in the water when being identified and released without being dragged onto the bank when required to.

i know 2 people, both charters, who ran tube jigs on trolling rigs. They caught a lot of fish that way, solid bright white, and now the stores don't sell that particular one any more. They've moved on to other lures but i'm sure there are similar tubes out there. Neither one was into bass fishing and didn't know common bass plastics so they called them tampons. hehe.

Yep, you do see bears once awhile at these places where I fish in the video. :)
Yep, ran into a couple mom and cubes this year. I always make sure me dog . Has his Bear bells on, and he's , pretty good at not running into the bush

Too many fish for you perhaps. There is a daily limit on how many fish you are allowed to retain, so as long as you are staying within that limit, nobody should have a problem with it.
