The lodging advice is spot on. I used to work in a hotel and so many people wouldn’t book ahead of time and literally the whole state fills up rooms on the weekends in the summer.
Bonus tips: 1: Moxie is great don't let anyone, even most of the locals, tell you different. 2: "Fall" is more of an educated guess of what you can expect when you get here. September can be pretty hot sometimes and you should be mentally prepared to drive through a little bit of snow if you come in October/November.
I'm from Georgia and I can't remember the last time we had an autumn. I miss seasons. I miss seeing the leaves change, wearing sweaters, etc. She sounds southern.
Bobsuruncle Mum just jump on 95N! I lived in Savannah longer than anywhere else in my life and bits and pieces stick with ya. 😉 Alternatively the N GA mountains have some decent foliage. How Bout Them Dawgs!
Bobsuruncle Mum My mom says the same thing--she likes the seasons. We're from Virginia and we get it there. We live in Indiana now--and for a long time--and I get sick of the cold weather. Most of the year!
I got to see Maine, back in 1990: a summer bike trip up the seacoast, from Popham Beach to Bar Harbor. I was ready to plunk down money for a summer home right then and there! But I was only 15, and I didn't have any.
I think the smaller roadside motels work because of why people generally vacation in Maine. You come to slow down, even during the summer. People are generally really nice and nobody is in a hurry. It’s not unique but they play up to the cozy feel. Get lost and bring a paper map because GPS doesn’t work is a little counter intuitive. There is a different feel to the side roads but for specifically Maine, the highways are still great. Billboards are illegal and we spend a ton of money keeping the wood line clean, specifically because it’s beautiful to look at. I know this was in Maine and talking for New England but those two things really separate them from the rest and undervalues Maines scenic highways. I think the larger point was stay away from typical tourist things, mostly. Which is true, almost anything you can do there you can do somewhere else for half the price or less. Maine has a relatively low cost of living and if you can avoid some of the traps you can get a lot of value for your money. You need Moxie to be able to drink Moxie. Fun Fact; That is where the word Moxie originates. We also seem to name our dogs Moxie a lot...
I used to know someone who was originally from Maine but now lives here in SoCal and he said that nature here in SoCal doesn't even hold a candle to nature in Maine. I beg to differ though, but I can see how Maine in the fall and winter is beautiful. One day I'll make it over to the East Coast.
Great video, Jocelyn! You're getting more natural. It's nice to see your lovely face. One tip that's worked for me: Get the long-lasting batteries for your camera. I got some batteries in 2012, I think, they still work! I went to Spain and Portugal in 2012, Jamaica in 2015, Savannah, Georgia, USA in 2017 and the Azores also in 2017--they worked for all those trips.
Loved the comment about lobster and ice cream :) In my region, beautiful Lofoten in Northern Norway, we are known for producing stockfish (dried cod). Some tried/served it on soft ice. For some reason it just never coughed on :)
Jocelyn Wolters : Most of the stockfish/dried cod from Lofoten goes to Italy. In Portugal they use "clipfish" that is some dried fish from Norway as well, but not from my region. When visiting Rome I didn't get the option of fish on my gelato either ;)
Pumpkin whoopie pies are even more wicked pissah, but I can attest that not all Mainers like Moxie :). Great tips! Although, a tip from a local - head northwest for less crowded places to see fall foliage. The Bigelow Mountains are a great place to visit in autumn and not too far from Portland.
It's funny that I recognize most of places the footage is taken... that "school house" road side vegetable stand is 5 miles from my aunt's house on rt 1 Warren!
You can also appreciate that you won't be in Maine a few weeks later or have to rake those leaves. Grew up in the Midwest leaf peeping came with dread because of the cold. Glad you enjoyed it.
Nicely done! I'm an annual 2 week Maine resident, in the warm part of the year of course....those bugs are usually around from May until August, at least in mid to northern Maine. Southern Maine....Portland and south, could be into September. Always love me some Maine!
Why am I shouting about whoopie pies? Because my girlfriends had a coniption that it is maybe the greatest treat ever. 😁 y'all go enjoy Maine in any season.
+Jocelyn Wolters I've had whoopie pie a couple of times but never in Maine unfortunately. Not super fond of the filling actually but they're pretty good. Excellent tips and fun commentary. Love this video.
Whoopie pies are a Pennsylvania Dutch thing, first of all. Second, they’re amazing either way and I fully endorse Maine’s affinity for them because I travel the coastline as often as I’m able and enjoy being able to get one at most any convenience store.
Just watched this and: 1) Moxie is actually closer to a rootbeer with a pronounced bitterness. Also, it's not really an acquired taste as you typically like it or you don't, no real in between. If you don't, more for the rest of us! 2) You forgot to mention the red hotdogs. As far as I know, it's just a Maine thing. We have "natural" colored hotdogs, but red is just iconic. 3) We don't all talk like Tim Sample or Bob Marley (no, the comedian). 4) Mainers have an interesting sense of humor. (i.e. You can't get there from here, you have to stahht someplace else.)
I always say when viewing the fall colors it’s better to towards the end of the peak time frame than the beginning. I would rather see the colors just so slightly past the peak than before but obviously the peak is the best.
Understood. You have the equal but opposite problem I have when I contemplate a trip to Europe. Yes, I want to go back for another adventure, but my list of places I want to visit is as long as my arm. But as an American and native Southerner, I love Maine (especially in the summer when Hell comes to visit us in South Carolina) and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
AndyMcGehee : I think we understand each other perfectly. I'be been to the US once when visiting New York and Washington. I will probably travel there again. However, as beautiful it is, Maine will not be on the top of my list. Just as I understand that Americans visiting Europe for the first time would not visit my beautiful region Lofoten (even though they should ;) ).
There are many flavors, they do an orange dry, a cranberry lime, ginger ale, and a variety of seltzers. The orange tastes like orangina, the cranberry tastes like a lime rickey and the ginger ale is pretty typical. The seltzers are nice as well
it depends on when you go. Close to water the leaves tend to change earlier so If you come in late september/early october stay close to the coastline and if you're here in late October go a little farther north. I live somewhat near the coastline and sometimes you only get a short window where all the foliage is nice because one or two good rainfalls will strip most of the trees.
Thanks for the beautiful video. Unfortunately, there were some very rude comments from some of the citizens of Maine. It seems they despise everything about tourists. They need to put up signs on every road entering Maine that state: Tourists Prohibited . I'd say that would be a warm, friendly greeting from them.
Local tip #1: You should know you're going to have to drive. I have never in my life seen an Uber in Maine. Local tip #2: If you can, Go see a University of Maine ice hockey game in Orono It's a great atmosphere to be in even if you're not a fan of hockey. Local tip #3: Moose are quite rare south of Orono. Local tip #4: even though we boarder Canada, most of us don't speak French (or any other languages besides english) Local tip #5: Go to a Dunkin shortly before they close. the selection might not be great but you might get some free doughnuts. Also, realize that people in Maine don't like tourists. Especially in small towns and ESPECIALLY during the fall. We have a word for tourists: Flatlanders. We also won't trust anything you say and ridicule you when you leave. Btw, Route 1. Not highway one.
You certainly won't be treated like fecal material in Texas. Come see what really nice people are like. Find some smaller cities to visit. Large metro areas aren't indicative of true Texas hospitality. Too many people there that aren't true Texans. I know that from experience growing up in Houston. Maybe Maine's slogan should be Tourists NOT Welcome.
People these days are monsters, autumn is the leavess hospice for fuck’s sakes! They be like, "oh it’s so beautiful how the leaves are falling to their death!"😡
Don’t go on weekends, stay in a CUTE motel and hotels are normally more expensive and wear LL Bean - WHAT. I normally LOVE your videos, this being a wicked big exception. barbara cronin I appreciate ypur candor but, I think you mistook me. Dress in practical clothes and layers, LL Bean notwithstanding. Do you really not think the 1950s roadside motels are cute? I love them, I love stepping back in time for a minute. When every inn and BnB was booked (because weekends are crazy busy) we found a Westin for little more than half what we would pay in comparable cities...and fairly unoccupied. It was an excellent 3rd choice as far as price and availability went since I hadn't booked ahead on a weekend. I'm sad you feel I didn't get* fall in New England.
From a native Mainer I have to say everything you said is spot on. Glad you had a good time.
fkflintstone a wonderful time! Thanks for the local affirmation.
The lodging advice is spot on. I used to work in a hotel and so many people wouldn’t book ahead of time and literally the whole state fills up rooms on the weekends in the summer.
You should do more videos Jocelyn! Also awesome to see New England like this, watching from Boston now!
As a brit, the word "pisser" sounds funny there. 😂
Greetings from Old England.
I live in Texas and don't understand what piss and a good time have in common.

Bobsuruncle Mum wow
I live in Austin, Texas, and I feel the same way.
I like to jhoke that we only have two seasons here: "Heat Stroke" and "Bleah."
I got to see Maine, back in 1990: a summer bike trip up the seacoast, from Popham Beach to Bar Harbor. I was ready to plunk down money for a summer home right then and there! But I was only 15, and I didn't have any.
+Nick Hentschel sounds like my experience :)
this woman has the cutest voice.

See, I'm weird. Dried cod actually sounds delicious.

+Christine Roderick thanks for the tip!
Christine Roderick we almost did that, darn it, but, we got a bit caught up in the shopping 😉 and ran out of time. Oops.
I live in Portland Maine and I noticed that you were in Deering Oaks Park!! THANKS for the invite to the State and New England area!!!
It's funny that I recognize most of places the footage is taken... that "school house" road side vegetable stand is 5 miles from my aunt's house on rt 1 Warren!
Tip #6, keep driving north and come to Atlantic Canada. Fall is beautiful here too.
+Mark Small it really is beautiful up there
We loved it in Summer! I can imagine it is equally lovely in Autumn 😊
Wicked pissa!! You used it correctly! 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
wtglb oh, yay! Thanks for letting me know. 😁 I so enjoyed your lovely state!
I'm sorry, what language is that?
I don't know what piss and a good time have in common.
Great video Jocelyn!
+THECHAMP606 thank you
You can also appreciate that you won't be in Maine a few weeks later or have to rake those leaves. Grew up in the Midwest leaf peeping came with dread because of the cold. Glad you enjoyed it.
Nathan Wira 😆
I don't do well with the cold either
Y'all need to get handheld blowers. Raking takes precious time from jumping in the piles. 😉😉
Great video hun lol!
Hope to see more of you & the kids, along with Dad lol!
Nicely done! I'm an annual 2 week Maine resident, in the warm part of the year of course....those bugs are usually around from May until August, at least in mid to northern Maine. Southern Maine....Portland and south, could be into September. Always love me some Maine!
PSA: instead of driving 20mph to see all the pretty leaves, just pull over occasionally. I gotta get home from work, dammit!
Tosh T interesting
Ztez Maxim The best seasonal Whoopie Pies are gotten between January and December.
Wonderful nature. I really enjoyed this video.
Maine is on our Bucketlist BIGTIME! Thanks for the tips.
Try Route 11 - lightly travelled and very scenic for leaf peeping! And yes, pass on the lobster ice cream.
Whoopie pies are a Pennsylvania Dutch thing, first of all. Second, they’re amazing either way and I fully endorse Maine’s affinity for them because I travel the coastline as often as I’m able and enjoy being able to get one at most any convenience store.
Glad to see you doing a video..and this is definitely on my bucket list. And I still prefer an actual camera too!
Glad to see you guys up in our neck of the woods :) watching from the University of Maine, Orono
Just watched this and:
1) Moxie is actually closer to a rootbeer with a pronounced bitterness. Also, it's not really an acquired taste as you typically like it or you don't, no real in between. If you don't, more for the rest of us!

I think I was 16 before I realized hot dogs weren't red by default.
Loved the video Jocelyn
Would love to see a Portland Maine 10 Things vid!
I always say when viewing the fall colors it’s better to towards the end of the peak time frame than the beginning. I would rather see the colors just so slightly past the peak than before but obviously the peak is the best.
Maine looks beautiful
+Joker it's gorgeous
I’m from Massachusetts and I’ve never heard anyone say “leaf peeping” 😂
Owen Healy I’m from Maine and I’ve never heard anyone call it Leaf Peeping either...
I love the fall here in Maine. But *MAN.* leaf peepers are so annoying.
Cool vid, great tips, and Jocelyn is always a treat!
Kevin Hendryx Thanks. 😊
De nada. Y'all keep up the good work, your videos and insider tips are tremendous!
603. Kancamangus Highway is a must during foliage season.
also Mohawk trail or anywhere near the Quabbin
Loved this! Been dreaming to visit New England ever since 99s Gilmore Girls :P
Nice video about an beautiful area that I will probably never visit because I live in Europe.

Runar Andersen: Yes, it would be hard to justify visiting Lofoten (beautiful as it is) when I haven't yet made it to Oslo.
Jocelyn nice video!!
Here in Colorado all the trees lost their leaves a month ago! It's cold now.
My home state! Great video!
+Chelsea Litalien thank you
Chelsea Litalien thank you 😊
Visit baxter state park....visit the county....Aroostook. not as touristy. Many cute B&Bs.
Beautiful
Omg she sounds so much like Britney Murphy especially when she laughs!
Wait, even Google maps got in on the 'you can't get there from here' joke?
Most importantly pull all the way out of the road when you want to take a picture and DO THE SPEED LIMIT!
When did you guys visit?
Where should I fly into from Ireland? Should I fly into New York or Boston???
Boston...then take 95 to Maine.Check out the White Mountains in NH while your at it,its absolutely stunning!
You are talking about the Indian Summer/fall?
And dont forget to try polar soda
That stuff is awesome got it here in Spartanburg S.C
Charles Holmes sounds like a good idea
+Charles Holmes what does it taste like?
There are many flavors, they do an orange dry, a cranberry lime, ginger ale, and a variety of seltzers. The orange tastes like orangina, the cranberry tastes like a lime rickey and the ginger ale is pretty typical. The seltzers are nice as well
I should do this... oh wait I’ve lived in Maine my whole life
Who anyone who isn’t aware moxie is the best soda.
ill Survival inc interesting
moxie is disgusting are you okay
As a Mainer, I would have to disagree with you haha.
I haven't lived here all my life...
I'm not dead yet. 🤣
where is the best place in Maine to catch fall foliage???
Anywhere there’s the most trees and least amount of houses.
it depends on when you go. @WoltersWorld your wife is beautiful! Greetings from Connecticut!

Boycott Maine and tell Susan Collins why
