    This could not be more accurate. I brought my BX home in my 6x10 dump trailer with a 1/2 ton truck and quickly discovered that was not nearly a big enough trailer.
    As time went on I was eventually able to buy an 18 foot equipment trailer and it’s perfect for the BX and several attachments. I also ended up with a 3/4 ton truck over time as well.
    To anyone out there wondering how accurate this video was, it could not be more on point. Excellent job!

    Great video Lucas! Some real good sound advice! As for myself, I don`t have a truck or trailer to haul my BX23s around now. I wasn`t for hire even when i did have the truck & trailer. I gave up counting how many times people expected me to do everything for free. People that have never owned equipment like this, usually have no idea what it costs to own & operate it. I didn`t want to become "that guy" that tore my stuff up just to help somebody else, unless it was for close family or a really good friend or two. Other than that, the equipment lasts alot longer when its only use is for you, and not for the whole community`s use. Nobody ever wants to help you pay for broken down worn out equipment. I learn THAT hard lesson many decades ago.

      That’s true, it is an enormous expense to own and maintain equipment. Most people think, well since they already have it then it’s no extra expense. You have to have boundaries for sure. 👍

    My Kubota dealer has special line of trailers from Cam that are built specifically for small Kubota tractors even painted Kubota orange . They are about $5500 dollars. Capacity 7K. I’m seriously considering getting one especially in Tax Free NH where I want my homestead to be . My tow vehicle is a 2021 F-350 7.3 V8 4.30 gears. No issues towing with the tow vehicle lol 😂

    Another great video. We towed a camper for a number of years and were just amazed at how overloaded some trucks were. I think it has become a lot better with camper dealers asking what are you towing with before the sale. You still see a lot of people towing to fast on cheap tires that don't realize how much they heat up. Your correct when you get a tractor or backhoe you have more friends, until it breaks then they are busy.

    • @paulholmes1303
      @paulholmes1303 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead That is the key word, 'cheap'. Another factor is plies. Too many people think any tire will do on a trailer, and I've had some say, 'trailer' tires are too expensive, it's cheaper to use car tires and accept replacing them (a lot) more often. That is okay unless they fail at speed.
      Another factor is plies. Trailer tires need a lot more plies (or a higher ply rating) than auto tires, due to the high axle loading experienced and the flex experienced with heavier, usually not shock supported springs and/or the rigidity of a one piece axle. Any flex of the tire generates heat, which includes under-inflation and that load bulge at the bottom revolving around the tire, increasing with speed. Optimum inflation (to match the load) should result in less heat, even at speed.

    • @PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead
      @PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually double checked my speed rating last night and they are L which are rated for 75mph. I was glad to see that.

    One point often overlooked is that your tongue weight is on the tow vehicle. It doesn't count toward your trailer limit, For instance, your loaded gross trailer weight is 8,000 lb. If you have the minimum recommended tongue weight (10%) of 800 lb., your trailer weight is actually 7,200 lb., well within its 7,500 lb. rating.

A lot of people don't realize how fast weight builds up when you have a loader, attachments, ballast, etc. I think my goal is a 14K or heavier gooseneck for the 2607H. For the prices, though... I can pay $100-200 for a towing company if I need to take it back to the shop someday, and I don't have any immediate needs to take it somewhere else to help anyone with any projects. That's some good tips on towing and weights. I towed around 10k with my F150 regularly as long as my trailer brakes were good but it was starting to get sketchy. We have been needing to tow larger loads and now that we have the 23 Silverado 2500 can tow up to 18,500lbs, which also now allows us to tow the tractor which just the tractor and loader is 8k plus the trailer and any implements.

Came with 4 and I added 6 more HD D-rings. $9800 out the door with mods and taxes. I don’t remove my tractor much from my property . If and when I do, I’d like a 18ft open.

    I agree completely go dual axle if you can on a trailer towing a subcompact, they make single axles with 5000lb rating but the stability and safety of an extra axle is worth it, I tow a B2601 with loader and loaded tires, I tow with a 2012 ram 1500 hemi 10,200 tow rating, the trailer is a 15ft 7,000lb rated and I can fit only a box plow on trailer with tractor when loader is on, if buying a new trailer I agree 18 ft is ideal

    I told the dealer what I was hauling and what it weighs to determine what trailer I needed. Hauling overweight is how people kill themselves and others. You can also be cited for hauling overweight or with a vehicle not rated for the trailer and load. If you can’t afford to buy the proper trailer you can’t afford to transport it yourself. Sometimes reality bites.

    You can also get sway bars or add a leaf spring to make it a lot less tongue weight on a half ton pickup if that's the case. They make hitch setups that take the to give weight off the truck, it's not called a sway bay per day but same idea, I had one for my camper and it made a world of difference. Alot.of.times with a capable half ton pickup the towing capability and the actual tongue weight don't line up. I have a L3940 and I lost track of how many times people expected me to come over with me tractor till I tell them $100 an hour. "What? Really? It won't take you that long what's the big deal" well you can go rent a tractor from home Depot or the local rentals place and see what it costs. Or better yet go buy a tractor ($20,000+) buy a trailer ($5000+) and then go buy a 3/4 ton truck to pull it, even if you buy everything used and get a good deal, tractor, truck and trailer is $50,000. And if you got something that costs a lot less, well I probably don't want to be on the road when you are haha

  • @paulholmes1303
    @paulholmes1303 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks, Lucas! A couple of other items is tongue weight and tongue height primarily on non-fifth wheel trailers. People tend to think if it is able to be pulled, it's good to go. Too many then wonder why the towing vehicle is a bit bouncy or starting and stopping is a balancing act. Tongue height should always be set with the trailer bed flat. If not, the tow vehicle could lose braking adhesion on either the front or rear axle. The same could be seen with tongue weight, although that also affects handling. 100 to 500 pounds (typically 10% of load capacity) should be the maximum tongue weight. Had one guy with a toy hauler load the back with all the removable gear, "because it was easier to get to". He was lucky he didn't roll either the SUV or the trailer on a 70 MPH highway when he applied the brakes and the trailer took out the rear quarter panel with a jackknife.
    Finally, get a trailer with a good axle position versus trailer bed length to facilitate that tongue weight balance. Remember these tractors are very nose heavy and tongue weight should always be checked after loading.

    I think the weight thing is strange. my 2002 two-wheel drive V6 f150 regular cab short box is rated at 8800 lb. I would like to think that in the past 20 years trucks have gotten to the point where they would haul a little bit more than that.

Now I can safely tow any trailer I might get and can safely carry any load that does not require a big rig. After 2,000 miles you get used to the big hips.
