brilliant Brian! loved this! appeals to my engineering mind. I must admit that I have destroyed boots in a shorter period of time! next time I am cutting them open. like the look of your new boots and will be interested to see how you get on with them! cheers Paul

Cheers Paul, I'm the same minded (but not actually an engineer) and like to know how things work.
You must have been working them hard, maybe that's my problem, not doing enough walking 😂
I'm always intrigued and apprehensive about new boots but if my research is correct then these should be grand.
Just to pick a Munro to unleash them on now.

Oh my god, when you first made the cut I was gritting my teeth, haha! 4 years seems like pretty good going for a pair of lightweight fabric boots, so kudos to The North Face for that. I wonder if they should/could reinforce the bend points to avoid such issues? Then again, they need re-sales ;)
I've been through two pairs of Meindl Bhutans in the past two years. Both pairs failed due to a broken lace lug in the exact same position, just ripped clean out. Had grand visions of them lasting me years!

HaHa! I was doing the same when going for it but knew they were done.
I keep thinking that if that 'skin' part wasn't at the side then it could allow the water to flush anything away along both sides because if you're in water to that height then you might as well let it up to the sides. You could be right though, built to fail.
That's a surprise to hear about the Meindls. I wore their Desert Fox boots through my time in Afghanistan and they were (excuse the pun) bomb proof. It goes to show that these things will all go at some point and it doesn't really matter what you do, or maybe you're a machine and should lace your boots a bit less rough 😂

@@AScotsmanOutdoors Maybe! I always had them very tight 😯 I’d bought them because of their reputation and they looked rock solid, but I was never very happy with the weight anyway at over a kilo per foot 🥵
You should ping TNF a message with a link to your video, might be helpful for them?
I’m considering a pair of Hanwag Alaska’s for the winter, but the old school special forces Karrimor boots have my eye as well. I grew up wearing Austrian para boots 😁

its so frustrating when the boots fail i've had the same issue a few times its so annoying

Hey Lloydi, has it been the Gore-Tex that has failed with your boots?

Interesting video. IMO 4 years is not a bad lifetime for a lightweight waterproof boot. I had a Salomon pair fail recently after 3 years and I was going to have a go trying to seam seal them from the outside, but this video made me realise the issue is no doubt similar to yours, i.e the lining failed. Recently slowly been moving to the trail runner and waterproof sock combo anyway for 3 season use.

Hey ol' Pirate! I think I was being harsh on the lifetime of these boots and now feel that for a little over £100 you can't go wrong.
I think most of these (and all GTX) boots have the Gore-tex as a sock liner. The constant flexing combined with the porous outer layer in these boots allowed the grit to stay in around the lower rand. I think that making the rand have some lower level holes to allow water to flush out the grit may make these last even longer.
I've seen a number of people move to the lighter boot, waterproof sock and small ankle gaiter combo but the only thing that puts me off that is the straps of the ankle gaiters seem to snap a lot by being stood on constantly.
At the moment I am still using the Scarpa R-Evo GTX boots and they're absolutely superb. They're pricier at £270 (ish) but just work wonders, even on the full West Highland Way and in winter.
Thanks for watching and commenting and I hope that this has helped in some way.

Personally I think if your doing a lot of walking like you Murray, Ray, Robin do that sort of thing can happen anytime

Hey Duncan, I completely get your view and you're not wrong at all. Plenty of miles on boots will wear them down and they'll all eventually fail in some way, I just found these went faster than my previous boots and wanted to know where.
It's a given though because they were light weight and more porous than say leather and suede boots which again I feel sped up their demise.
I mean it when I say thanks for the comment because I do appreciate differing views and like healthy discussion.
Lastly, do you have a favourite boot or a recommendation?

If I'm ever at a level I'm dissecting boats then I'll be interested to know how I got there lol.
The boots I was using as a reference were my Karrimor brown leather ones (they're in my first few vlogs) which if had for just over ten years. Something pierced the sole and they were done, that was a sad day too.
How long have yours been going?
