How to meditate Samatha (For the Meditation Trainer) - Dhamma Talk giving by the late Dhamma Vipassanā Ketodhammo.
Samatha, "calm," "serenity," "tranquillity of awareness," and vipassanā, literally "special, super, seeing", are two qualities of the mind developed in tandem in Buddhist practice.
Fourty objects of meditation grouped in the following manner:
    1. Kasiṇa 10 (Ten totalities or devices)
    2. Asubha 10 (Ten kinds of foulness)
    3. Anussati 10 (Ten Recollections)
    4. Brahmavihara 4 (Four Divine Abiding - also called Sublime States)
    5. Arupa 4 (Four Immaterial States)
    6. Aharapatikulasañña 1 (Repulsiveness of Nutriment)
    7. Catudhatuvavathana 1 (Analysis of the Four Elements)
Kasiṇa, Pali word, means "whole", refers to a class of basic visual objects of meditation used in Theravada Buddhism. The objects are described in the Pali Canon and summarized in the famous Visuddhimagga meditation treatise as kammaṭṭhāna on which to focus the mind whenever attention drifts. Kasiṇa meditation is one of the most common types of samatha meditation, intended to settle the mind of the practitioner and create a foundation for further practices of meditation.
Asubha means Impurity, Unattractiveness, Loathsomeness, Foulness.
Anussati, Pāli word, means "recollection," "contemplation," "remembrance," "meditation", and "mindfulness." It refers to specific Buddhist meditational or devotional practices, such as recollecting the sublime qualities of the Buddha, which lead to mental tranquillity and abiding joy.
Brahmavihārā - sublime attitudes, "abodes of brahma" are a series of four Buddhist virtues and the meditation practices made to cultivate them. They are also known as the four immeasurables (Pāli: appamaññā)[1] or four infinite minds. The brahmavihārā are:
    *loving-kindness or benevolence (mettā)
    *compassion (karuṇā)
    *empathetic joy (muditā)
    *equanimity (upekkhā)
According to the Metta Sutta, cultivation of the four immeasurables has the power to cause the practitioner to be reborn into a "Brahma realm."
Arupa means absence of matter or formless.
