The (fighter) pilot shortage for the USAF has been perennial self-inflicted gunshot wounds (SIGSW). Why does the USAF want to dumb down training and why ONLY new pilots? In 1979, if a pilot flew past 14 years, (total) the pilot was vastly more experienced & a happy camper, if flying was the first love. If the Air Force can’t see the very many & real options, then they deserve their self-described insanity happening now.

I have no compassion for their shortage. Drawdowns force thousands of pilots, pilot candidates and applicants out of the total force. Then 8-10 years later the Air force whines that they don't have enough pilots. Talk to the hand. and no, the only way to combat the pilot shortage IS NOT to just produce new pilots. they need to focus on retention.

That isn't the problem. The problem is the pilots are barely flying and they spend their time doing paperwork. That's like you having to write a 5 page essay for every 10 seconds you actually fly In Ace Combat.
I'm curious to know what caused the pilot shortage to begin. What caused pilots to leave? Were incentives or quality of life not to par? Did retirees know it would stress the pilot numbers? As I've seen top 5th generation F-22 & F-35 instructors teach, these aircraft require far less checklists, technical flight knowledge etc (IF the 22 or 35 is what they fly, as all 4th generation aircraft still require a lot of technical flight training/mastery). A senior F-22 instructor said a Cessna is far harder to fly than a Raptor. So as we train the newest pilots, the learning requirements should minimize as a result of flying more advanced aircraft. As for pilots coming from USAFA, I'd recommend that some of the military pseudo-hazing crap be eliminated in favor of officer leadership & pilot slot training from the earliest possible time.

What they don’t tell you is that there is a shortage of experience pilots only (Captains, Majors, and Colonels) not necessarily pilots as a whole. The Airforce isn’t going to allow brand new LT’s fresh out of flight school to fly A10’s, F-35’s, F-22’s, B-1, and B-2 Bombers unless they are top quality (top 10%) during their flight training. Young pilots who are inexperienced are usually flying F-16’s to gain experience and in some cases the F-15’s. However, the production of experience pilots has been fairly slow because when you only average 6-12 hours of flight time a month and 100 hours of paperwork of course it’s going to be hard for the Airforce to retain experience pilots after 10 years of service.
The Air Force is really the best in the world in everything they do....REALLY THE BEST IN THE WORLD...I miss the uniform and I am grateful and blessed to have an opportunity to be one small part of the best in the world!
@@h00z Many of them don't because they are either too lazy to the extra work to get good, ignore best practices, or don't care that they burn their employees out. At least some in healthcare.
They should consider a shorter re-commitment term for pilots to be instructors. Like say give them a 2 year contract to work at UPT and then let them out. I'm sure plenty of people would consider something short term like that, and it might help with the shortage of instructors.
What this basically means is that the military will extend its duty years for pilots so if you want to work for an airlines one day and getting the free flight training route to the military, I would consider something else.
Alec Brook I think I’ll just apply for the academy since it’s just a dream school and am sure I could make if I tried. Thank you for the advice everyone!
Tap on the pool of civilian pilots available. Many civilian pilots are Private, Commercial, ATP, instrument....which means less time to train and fill that pool pipeline. If your looking at creative ways, look at the assets right before you. We love our country too. Thank you for your service!!
I might get some serious backlash for this but let's keep it real. The Air Force doesn't care, and neither does any other branch. You are just a number to them. I've experienced waits of 5 months or longer just to get seen for basic AND significant health care needs. My child, who we thought had skin cancer, had to wait 4 months to be seen. Did the Air Force offer any help whatsoever when the constant rotation 12 hour shifts began to show serious health issues? NO! The do more with less attitude is overrated and is what's driving good Airmen out of the service. Maybe the people at the top, should actually tell Congress that we need to do less given the fact that we are burning people out at an unsustainable rate. This problem isn't just the pilots, it's a significant issue on the enlisted side too. I'm close enough to the end that I won't see a change in my time but I would damn sure love to see a change happen for those left in uniform. Don't get wrong, the USAF was the 2nd best decision I ever made and it is an outstanding organization, far better than our sister services in my opinion, but we still have work to do in the quality of life area. The mission is important but if you burn the people out, we won't give a damn about the precious mission. We'll care about rest and vacations and getting out of uniform as quickly as possible. I think the USAF has lost sight of that.
It would depend on a number of factors, like first and foremost what do you want to do? are you considering being a lifer or just doing your initial to get you going in life and then get out, are you married, do you have kids? Try answering these and maybe we can give you some advice.
this is for US armed force and to the whole world, be lenient to the applicant and see if there any benefit or loss; if there’s loss go back to ur former way if there no loss but benefits then holla at me. From England
That's what I was thinking too. It seems that the answer to their problem is right in front of their face, all the same comments in here - pilots just want to fly, have decent pay and living conditions. It's not rocket science, but no, they want to rewrite the entire way they train pilots, throw the book out and rewrite it. I get it that computers and AI have advanced quite a bit, but it's not a panacea, there's no substitute for the physical and psychological stress of being in a real cockpit at altitude. I was particularity concerned with the statement "we have to shorten the time to train a pilot." that has disaster written all over it.
"When it takes us a year to produce an aviator, that timeline has to be shrunk" The pipeline for a US Army rotary wing aviator is 18 months and they're suffering a worse need/vacuum of pilots.
Sure, but it’s not that simple. Biggest problem rn is keeping the pilots the AF already has because they’re losing them to civilian jobs. They don’t just need pilots, they need pilots to stay. It would help if instead of putting pilots in desk jobs and mundane overwork not involving aviation, they actually put them in the air. They should be up there flying
I remember listening to reserve pilots who flew commercial aircraft normally.................as a SERE instructor.......but couldn’t wait for the F-16 time! Like kids again,...it all flows back! They love teaching the kids........sorry. Young officers!

@snipe69 max salary for a 15 year captain at a major airline like delta flying a widebody aircraft like a B777 is approx. $230-250k per year before taxes. Even spending 5 years at a regional like Envoy flying the E175 will net you about $110k per year. I'm taking the civilian route any day. All info got from airline pilot central.com
@snipe69 thats true civilian pilots can make more but you forgot that airforce pilot will get free housing, free food, insurance, healthcare etc which will all add up to more than the 27k difference.

@@h00z Many of them don't because they are either too lazy to the extra work to get good, ignore best practices, or don't care that they burn their employees out. At least some in healthcare.
Is that the dcs jf 17 at 2:50?
Then you have people like me who are ready to make this their life I just have to get through school
They should consider a shorter re-commitment term for pilots to be instructors. Like say give them a 2 year contract to work at UPT and then let them out. I'm sure plenty of people would consider something short term like that, and it might help with the shortage of instructors.
Why is there video of the Cadets wearing their proxy at 1:48?
Sniped
Of course I would see this at the age of 39. If age wasnt a problem I would jump at this opportunity.
There's waivers.
What this basically means is that the military will extend its duty years for pilots so if you want to work for an airlines one day and getting the free flight training route to the military, I would consider something else.
I love US and it's armed forces. From Pakistan 🇵🇰
Extremely hopeful I can get into this school and get a pilot slot.
Just go the rotc way
Jake Carsten u can go to OTS post undergrad
Alec Brook I think I’ll just apply for the academy since it’s just a dream school and am sure I could make if I tried. Thank you for the advice everyone!
Joel Muamba if you want to be a pilot in the Air Force you’d be very ignorant to think ROTC or OTS will give you a better shot than the academy
Meanwhile in the UK - thousands of applicants competing for dozens of slots. HIRE US!!! I'd gladly fly for the USAF or USN.
When the air force uses rgb ram and inked water cooling
HAHA i saw that too
Yeah lol looked like TridentZ RGB ram and most likely a GTX series card.
The funniest part is that the sim is getting 10 fps
@@robburgundy9539 The monitor is most likely plugged into the CPU, making the fancy graphics card mean nothing
SuperSamSquared ???????????? What does that even mean???? Do you know how a computer works?????
If I wasn’t too old at 40 I would definitely enlist to become a pilot
Is there still a shortage in 2021? I noticed they raised the age from 30 to 33.
Tap on the pool of civilian pilots available. Many civilian pilots are Private, Commercial, ATP, instrument....which means less time to train and fill that pool pipeline. If your looking at creative ways, look at the assets right before you. We love our country too. Thank you for your service!!
If I was an American, I will definitely join USAF, lifetime opportunity.
I am thinking about joining you guys
I’d want a F22 pilot slot.
Any advice for someone who’s thinking about join the military but doesn’t know what branch would be the most rewarding in the long run?
It would depend on a number of factors, like first and foremost what do you want to do? are you considering being a lifer or just doing your initial to get you going in life and then get out, are you married, do you have kids? Try answering these and maybe we can give you some advice.
This is a fantastic video! wow! thanks
Why can't the colonels and LT COL's fly that are commanders?
Typically people at that rank take a more leadership role.
Sachin Shah they are old
I know some LtCols that still fly I think even some Cols can fly as flight commanders.
this is for US armed force and to the whole world, be lenient to the applicant and see if there any benefit or loss; if there’s loss go back to ur former way if there no loss but benefits then holla at me.
From England
1:08 Tyndall before it was leveled
This is one of those situations where it can be unimaginably great or, it can be catastrophically damaging to the strength of the USAF.
Maybe they should start decommissioning older planes
did the instructor pilot play far cry 3
How did you ever expand the USAAF in WW2 fifty times over?
"When it takes us a year to produce an aviator, that timeline has to be shrunk"
The pipeline for a US Army rotary wing aviator is 18 months and they're suffering a worse need/vacuum of pilots.
A year is a completely BS number. No idea where they got that from. When I went in, it was roughly 1.5-2 years and that still hasn't changed.
Do you know even the training period for green berets have been reduced to just 1 year ?
@@Saicharan-hk9id NO sf training will never be lowered. Army pilot trainings is 1.5 to 2 years long. sf is around the same time.
@@thegreatdogzilla5855 No, check again. They reduced it to 6 months.
Cool vid love the very end
Great video
I saw the same problem during the vietnam war. Too much work, not enough crews.
Does anyone realize that fewer pilots, means more flight hours for future pilots
Sure, if you have a very naive concept on pilot work schedules
Proud of You!!🇺🇸👍❤️💪👏
“We need people” doesn’t look like it when I go talk to recruiters
what bougt health age
USAF ROCKS!!! KEEP IT UP 👍
What’s the deal with the random “BLUE” that pops up in the video? Also some of that footage wasn’t even from the USAF! 😞
in 4 years tell me if they need need pilots because I will be first in line to hop in an f-22 raptor
how do I join the space force?
Because piloting courses are way too expensive and quite choosy also but that's somewhat understandable.
I remember listening to reserve pilots who flew commercial aircraft normally.................as a SERE instructor.......but couldn’t wait for the F-16 time! Like kids again,...it all flows back! They love teaching the kids........sorry. Young officers!
2:21 “Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is?”
*ehem..... Warrent Officer program.
@Brad Morrison Army pilots are also leaving.
Would've loved to see an inside look at Altus and the Heavies track.
Navy has the same problem
I passed the ASTB and passed the flight portion of the test and met the requirements for Navy OCS but was unqualified because I wear glasses/contacts.
I'm sorry Arthur. As a soldier serving in the US army I respect our military brothers . But can't you get a laser treatment or something ?
Jchelsea 99 since I didn’t go through ROTC or through an Academy, the military won’t take a chance with me
@@artiecon97 oh lol
@@artiecon97 but can't you get it and then become a pilot? I have had that question for a long time.
Jchelsea 99 navy ocs requires you choose your community before you join. It is the only branch that does that
I just submitted my application
If I wanna fly Pave Hawks, is the pipeline different?
Go WOFT. Fly for the Army.....pipeline is far better compared to Air Force.
What is the Air Force's policy with pilots already trained to the commercial level, both pre CFI, pre ATP, and post ATP?
Captain Nope absolutely nothing. Gotta still compete with the next dude and still go through UPT. Though, your package will be very competitive and you most likely get selected. If you go active.....
If you already have those ratings then you're in good shape. You have a high chance of being selected to fly for the guard/reserves.
Best job in the world.
Can you become a pilot with corrected vision?
yes
As long as your eyes are not worst than 20/70
@Rich 91"Pilots must have normal color vision, near visual acuity of 20/30 without correction, distance visual acuity of no worse than 20/70 in each eye correctable to 20/20 and meet other refraction, accommodation and astigmatism requirements." www.airforce.com/frequently-asked-questions/medical/what-are-the-vision-requirements-if-i-hope-to-be-an-air-force-pilot
Hope this helps
The Airforce just needs to realize that there enlisted ranks could easily help buffer the shortage of pilots
Agreed
Yea I submit my OTS package late 2020. We will see how that goes.
WhenVtecWasCool good luck man 👍
Instead of bachelor's degree, if they allow people who graduated community college to go through OTS then it will be much better.... Also hope they open MAVINI program for immigrants
It’s so hard to be a pilot with the g forces and everything else
God bless 🇺🇸 pilots
I wanted to be a pilot more than anything, when I was just entering college. Shame.
Thanks
Hmm, fly tough schedules in cool planes and be controlled mercilessly for 70k a year or fly boring jets closer to home for an upward of 200k. Hard decisions..
Immanuel O. would asking Siri to flip a coin to decide our fate help? 🤣
heads 70k job
tails 200k job
@snipe69 max salary for a 15 year captain at a major airline like delta flying a widebody aircraft like a B777 is approx. $230-250k per year before taxes. Even spending 5 years at a regional like Envoy flying the E175 will net you about $110k per year. I'm taking the civilian route any day. All info got from airline pilot central.com
@snipe69 no worries, the route chosen depends on the type of flying ppl enjoy
@snipe69 thats true civilian pilots can make more but you forgot that airforce pilot will get free housing, free food, insurance, healthcare etc which will all add up to more than the 27k difference.
Pilots are leaving the AF because they want to fly. By the time they are a Major, they spend less and less time in the air. Plus, the pay outside of the military is FAR better than within.
Man I would commission and fly in a heartbeat. But my eyesight isn’t perfect
PowerOfThePick same here but there’s got to be a way to our vision corrected out something 🤔
Funny
It doesnt have to be 20/20
@@synthethical9796 your eyes can't be worst than 20/70 in corrected

Allow enlisted to pilot
I’m dying to be a fighter pilot but I want to fly the F-22 I also want to attend the Air Force Academy but I don’t know or want to know 2 different foreign languages
Go enlisted first tbh
Why would I Want to do that when enlisted won’t have to go through basic training two I don’t get the officer ability so you can become a pilot and three is if I do go enlisted it’s extremely hard to become a commissioned officer.
Wanna be Airman Don’t let that dissuade you from your goal. I went to the Academy and had no interest in the foreign language courses but they ended up being very doable.
Freshman have to take a foreign language their whole year but you don’t have to stick with it afterwards if you don’t want to
Wanna be Airman insane how everything you said is completely incorrect
AI is going to take over most flying tasks.
No way, the USAF uses Origin PC for their PCs?
I think the air force would get more pilots if they brought back the warrant officer corps, allowing enlisted airmen to fly out of high school
