Awesome video. I installed my first clutch and was a bit concerned about the diaphragm springs looking flatter after installation, but this video confirms that this is normal after a clutch install.
Thank you for the video. The surprising thing I just found is I have a Sachs metal section on the clutch but the material on the clutch says Luk. It came out of a Sachs box. I'm installing this on my 1981 Mercedes 240d.
I Use this tool religiously but it does not centralise the drive plate correctly it lacks a boss to centralise the drive plate within the cover fingers I have modified a old plastic snap on alignment tool to make mine work correctly
Use of this tool l ensures the clutch angle geometry stays the same throughout its life. (clutch pedal pressure remains constant). If the tool ain't used then the pedal pressure increases as the clutch wears. It is clearly stated (with diagrams) on the LUK technical site.
At 3:25 you say "continue to tighten the spindle until the cover is flush with the flywheel mounting face". What exactly is this? I don't follow the meaning! What cover? Are we looking for an alignment somewhere?
it means tighten it till the pressure plate is flush with the flywheel the mounting face is the surface that the clutch disc and pressure plate rest on(bolt up to)
I think the other owner who had my BMW 320d changed clutch but didn't replace it correct and the clutch pedal stays a bit to high and unstable, thanks for the video explanation.

Folks.if possible USE this tool. Eurocarparts hire them iirc free but deposit needed. I ended up doing this job twice as 1st clutch lasted cpl thousand miles before I started to feel the shudder at bite point😦 with a new clutch and dmf that the tool wasn't used on. Just my advice. Use the tool . It's there for a reason. Yes. You can do job without one but I strongly feel it will not be the same as using this tool. That extra clutch I could have done without buying but hey we are all learning
Second thoughts, this clutch is really from NASSA's moon buggy that just sat down on Mars!!! Keep toking on that crack pipe numpty. A fucking boat! You made my day with that one.
3 drops of glue momentary clutch disc and placed centered on the pressure disc for 10+ minutes (degreased surfaces). Bonded discs are mounted on the flywheel - is divided on start. (If you do not remove a gearbox) ;)
Hello all... I know this comment may be met with some friction, but I've been fitting these types of clutch for a while and to this date have not used this tool. I intend to buy one as I don't want to let down my customers. Can someone tell me why I've been getting away with this for so long? Scott.
All you guys talking about aligning the clutch by eye must be old school shade tree guys with low comprehension skills. You COMPLETELY missed the whole point of this video, AND what this tool is for. It's NOT for aligning clutches, it's for setting/resetting the SAC (Self Adjusting Clutch) mechanism on this specific type of pressure plate. A plate most higher end European cars have that adjusts automatically as the friction disk wears and prevents the pedal effort from increasing as the disk wears.
J.D. Chapman the first part i figured myself but what difference does it make in the self adjust mechanism if i just bolt the pressure plate like in older vehicles? (In a star pattern of course)
People say that you can do it like that successfully, but ONLY if you're using a BRAND NEW PRESSURE PLATE. If you're re-using your same/old one with a NEW friction disc, you MUST reset your old plate so it is in it's "new" pressure plate setting. Otherwise it will be incorrectly set as if you've got a worn friction disc in, and it may not self-seat or "bed" correctly and ruin your new friction disc. You would think that it would re-adjust on it's own, but I don't know if I'd take that chance and have to pull everything again.
J.D. Chapman but i never replace just the disc, i always replace the whole kit (pressure plate, disc and throw-out bearing) so my question still remains.
Then if your pressure plate (and everything else) is brand new, there's no reason to have to reset it, it's set from the factory, just install it. Sometimes the factory setting is messed up in shipping if the kit is handled too roughly. So if that was the case, you really should reset it to be safe. It's a simple enough procedure.
The flush contact... plate to flywheel... sets the self adjuster.. trying to reinvent the wheel.... my customer did get over 200k miles outta his clutch.. he does have long commute...
morons ... all of you guys ... u could install it by eye ...but this is the correct way... precision...of course by eye...it will old 200 K miles ...if you drive it like and old lady .... but if you abuse your clutch it will reflect the way it was installed ... you guys most be from the US ... only power ... no brains ... in Germany we do it by the book "German made"
I've just installed a clutch on a renault megane 225. I followed a video showing the clutch plate prongs being compressed with a press, then the self adjusting springs release then you turn them to compress the self adjusting springs, then you release the press off the clutch cover and that's it set. But now that i've installed it the clutch isn't disengaging??
Does the clutch pedal still feel good? I ask because the clutch on 225's doesn't require compressing or the use of this tool. so either something went very wrong when doing that ^ (which unfortunately is likely) or there is some sort of hydraulic issue which is common because the slaves can be a bitch to bleed :/
@@urbanrider1972 yes, pedal has full travel and comes up back to the top. I have bled the clutch line till i'm sick doing it. I'm sure the clutch friction disc isn't being released and is just jammed in there somehow Slave cylinder 'is' pushing the pressure plate fingers, but clutch isn't disengaging? I have reverse bled the clutch, vacuum bled it and done it per the renault service manual 3 stage process. 3 stages are open bleed, pump pedal till no bubbles, then close bleed, then push down pedal once, open bleed, close bleed, pedal up, do this till you're sickened, then final reverse bleed. Everyone is telling me its the bleeding, but i just can't believe it, i think they're might be a British clutch fluid shortage, and it's all been me!
@@urbanrider1972 i definetly didn't over compress it while setting the self adjusters, just compressed them until i could turn the center disc anti-clockwise, and the green/yellow springs compressed.

This is a good tool to installation clutch fitting. I've been before to seeking for this tools. And I don't need now.

How would you use this tool on self adjusting clutches with a locking ring? Won't the locking ring be in the way of the alignment tool?
I Use this tool religiously but it does not centralise the drive plate correctly it lacks a boss to centralise the drive plate within the cover fingers I have modified a old plastic snap on alignment tool to make mine work correctly
Is it required to fit a brand new clutch? Or is it required only when we refit the used pressure plate and used clutch disc?
Use of this tool l ensures the clutch angle geometry stays the same throughout its life. (clutch pedal pressure remains constant).
If the tool ain't used then the pedal pressure increases as the clutch wears.
It is clearly stated (with diagrams) on the LUK technical site.
Excellent 👍 please send me the video of how to repair the diaphragm type clutch cover.
I could not understand the function of the special tool or the special function of this particular type of clutch system
I think it makes the bite stay at a set height perhaps, I want to know too but that's my guess
@@nickpierpoint4116 good guess, you are correct.

Thanks for that, maybe "cover" wasn't the best way to describe the pressure plate! All in and running now.

Never used that before, it doesnt make the clutch “permanently unoperative” if you dont use it
It doesn't, gives a stiffer pedal after the clutch wears a bit. Also can cause early clutch failure (slipping).
Nice to see one of these being used, but he sounds like a VOSA jobsworth!!
