Coneflowers are one of the more popular plants for a flower garden. Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) is a native variety that draws in many native insects and pollinators. There are 9 species of Echinacea that are native to the United States.
Here is a list of the species:
1. Echinacea angustifolia - Narrow-leaf coneflower
2. Echinacea atrorubens - Topeka purple coneflower
3. Echinacea laevigata - Smooth coneflower, smooth purple coneflower
4. Echinacea pallida - Pale purple coneflower
5. Echinacea paradoxa - Yellow coneflower, Bush’s purple coneflower
6. Echinacea purpurea - Purple coneflower, eastern purple coneflower
7. Echinacea sanguinea - Sanguine purple coneflower
8. Echinacea simulata - Wavyleaf purple coneflower
9. Echinacea tennesseensis - Tennessee coneflower

A must have flower! They are getting a bit expensive though. If you plant by seeds, they usually don't bloom the 1st year and the experts say even if they do, cut the flowers off on year 1 so it can focus on the roots. I have several. The native pinks are always great. I've had great luck with pow wow white and cantaloupe. Some exotic blends are difficult and the pollinators may not visit them much, unlike the native pinks. Always a garden winner!
