  • Civil rights pioneer Claudette Colvin refused to give her seat up to a white woman on a Montgomery bus in 1955, later inspiring Rosa Parks and the NAACP.
    About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

They actually didn’t want to represent Claudette because she was a young single pregnant black lady which is kind of messed up. She did what she did and should get the recognition regardless. ✊🏾

When you’re fighting a system which is predicated on the fact that you’re sub human and need stricter rules because you’re unable to look after yourself due to poor intellect; a single pregnant 15 year old is not who you should draw attention to - it’d feed into the “they’re irresponsible” stereotype that they rely on.
Rosa Parks was light skinned, married and employed - the acceptable face of civilised blacks.
It sucks but it’s the way of the world.

For anyone getting the idea that Rosa Park was "fake". There was nothing fake about her arrest and things like this happened a lot. The Civil Rights movement just made sure to organize a planned response to it, to make sure to put a stop to it. Rosa Parks was a diligent acitivist for Civil Rights and that fact should make her MORE celebrated, not less. But Claudette Colvin should also be rememberd and celebrated.

So in a way Claudette Colvin is the Nikola Tesla of the civil rights movement?

    • @taylorhigginbotham1993
      @taylorhigginbotham1993 4 ปีที่แล้ว +156

The reason they chose to set up Rosa parks instead of issuing Claudette is because they wanted somebody with a clean record and didn’t have anything going for them that the media could Tear apart. Claudette had allegedly had runs in with the law, no charges but she wasn’t considered and outstanding citizen. She supposedly wasn’t really thought highly of in her community and like the video said she got pregnant at a young age and had really dark skin(sad but the NAACP knew they would have a better chance with somebody lighter skin to be accepted). Rosa parks had a squeaky clean record and the NAACP knew that there probably wasn’t anything legitimate the media could bring up about Rosa to discredit her. They wanted to emphasize that these were peaceful protest and were very careful selecting people who couldn’t be proved as criminals, which is basically what white peoples thought all black people were back then

This event happened in March 1955.
Her baby was born in March 1956. She found out she was pregnant in July. She was deemed a troublemaker the moment she was arrested was rejected outright by her community from the beginning. No matter what excuse they gave to drop her, she should have at the very least been celebrated when the smoked cleared but they just kept on with the facade. It’s surprising because Rosa Parks got to know this girl very well after after her arrest in March. She’s done interviews explaining away her reason as to why she did it and completely skips over her inspiration as if it just popped into her head. Lying the first time is one thing but 20 to 30 to 40 years later. How? How do you do that? Did they not care what it would feel like to go through all of the negatives of being an activist without receiving any acknowledgement? That girl still has a record. We’re a whole 70 years later and she still hasn’t REALLY been recognized. Guess it’s because she’s still pregnant. 🤷🏾‍♀️🤰🏾

Joan of ark, Arsinoe, and now Claudette I’m amazed at 1. Drunk history is teaching me so much and 2. How many young females have accomplished so much!

Wonderful sketch. It is so crazy how in order to make history, not all of the history makers will be remembered. And it’s hard to control who gets the credit or doesn’t, but you gotta do what you gotta do to begin a revolution.

My mom told me about Claudette back when I was a young kid.
Times were different back then. Lighter skinned people were given more privileges in most cases. And being an unwed mother was very, very frowned upon.

I heard of this story before, excellent theme for an episode! Claudette Colvin was Rosa Parks before Rosa Parks. ❤
But we all love both, of course. It's not a competition: all of us in favor of civil rights fight together. ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻✊️

I thought Rosa Parks was in the black section? There was spillover from the white section, which usually meant people in the black section had to move. But I guess that would be hard to orchestrate...

    • @TM1Forever

    • @Coolkids-zu9md

MsSphinx91 also, they used Rosa as the face because she was in countless groups and they were able to draw on her network of friends and acquaintances to ensure more people were affected and would participate. Okay story telling but they left out a lot and twisted it in a negative way
