Knowing Chad gave Danny his roto tom makes me so happy!! Two of my absolute faves and I’m glad they’re friends 😁🥁
I actually loved Chad's ride so much but could never find it online. Finally I emailed Sabian and asked them for the "Chad Sexton" ride. Turns out it's a Cymbal Vote Artisan raw bell ride. It was never made because it did not win the vote for that year. They actually found one for me in the vault. It's really heavy! Underneath it also has Mark Luv's signature. Shout out to the guys at Sabian, they're the best!
That's badass. Congrats!
Thank! If you're looking for a similar sound, I think the HH Rock ride comes close.@@CFChristian
Man he’s been such an influence on me for so long. An amazing drummer and so glad to see him still rocking.
Same ✊
For sure!!!
Me too! What's funny in college, sum one who did NOT really know me said I reminded them of Chad Sexton & it was one of the best things I ever heard 🤣🤣🤣
He’s one of my favorite drummers! 🤩
I did some work for Chad back in the day on his drum shops. He was always super cool, no bullshit and no attitude. Very refreshing in this day and age. Same with his family, who helped him run the stores. Shirt off their back, salt of the earth folks. Glad to see Chad still killing it on drums with the mighty 311!
Chad’s snare sound is one of the most iconic snare sounds on recordings. You can always know he’s playing when you hear his sound. It was a bit of a revolution when he said it’s not the snare or the head tuning but where he hits it and you can see that on this video by where the stick marks are on the head!
This man does not get the respect and recognition he deserves. Such a musical powerhouse.
Chad Sexton, you got me into drums and started on them, and you are still a musical hero. Rock on man.
Saw 311 for the first time on their SOUND SYSTEM tour at the Hollywood Palladium, I was blown away! Seen them about a dozen times since. Chad, Peanut, Tim, Nick and S.A. are a class act.
311 on wax, wax on felt!
One of the best to play with the music and vocals. The snare is Iconic.
Cannot believe he is 53 years old. Man time flies.
I watched the NPR Tiny Desk 311 video the other day and was taken aback at how old they look. Granted, I look much older since the 90's, too, and they're probably 5-10 years older than I am...but it still stung a little. Lol.
Chad is a straight up drumming GURU
I got to see 311 at a Buffalo Wild Wings in Steamboat Springs back in 1993, was friggin' awesome! Maybe 250 people
Hooked Danny Carey up with the fixed up roto tom pedal. Respect.
I thought that was cool too!
Back in the 1990's yes Chad was an endorser of O.C.D.P I know this because i made his drums and set's for him at OCDP I was one of the Master builders and co-owner.
Chad was the most kind-hearted generous drummer I have met. Really down to earth, he is still this way today.
A little back ground on OCDP on the guitar center, i will not go into a lot of details that would take to long.
But the GS wanted us to come out with a new series of drums they called them Avalon series we did not make these GS had them made in Japan ship them to us we put the badges on them at the shop.this was the downfall of OCDP. This happen in about 2000, OCDP was sold to GS in 2012 some company in Japan restarted ocdp but the these new drum are mass-produced not the way we did it at OCDP..
Dude,I’m glad you said this. I remember coming to your shop in the 90’s and you guys treated me like I was with a platinum selling band and I’m a nobody 🤣
And I’ve said it before, the mass produced drums were the downfall of the mighty OCDP. I didn’t know exactly what happened but you cleared that up. I actually owned a set of the Avalon series and the QC was horrible on them. The 12” Tom was a completely different color than the rest. They were the Red Sparkle and it’s flake was smaller and lighter than the other drums. Plus, eventually every lug turret on the snare broke. I bought a bag and just replaced them as they would snap. I knew this wasn’t you guys to blame. I hate that this happened because OCDP is a legendary name in drums despite the fact.👍
Now that I think about it,you guys we’re making Chads Yellow kit when I was there. So maybe it was 2001,2002.
OCDP had a good run in the 90s. I didn't know that the decline had started as early as 2000. Very insightful thanks for the info.
OG Orange County kits were FIRE. I wanted one so bad for so many years. I knew that crap at GC wasn’t legit so I never bought one. You guys had skills & I hope you’re still in the game cuz I’d still buy your product.
@@mrdrumz2132Yellow Kit with the Octobans was Transistor era. So around 96-97’
The OG drum influence still rocking. Love it.
Sabian really needs to return to their original logo. Great to see his kit.
Been a 311 fan since the beginning, and Chad has always blown me away with his unique style and incredible chops. The rudiments chops from a marching band background, really sets him apart from the average rock drummer.
Have had the pleasure of talking drums with him many times over the years.
Same!
My main drumming inspiration has always been Chad Sexton. He's still got it after all these years, and never misses a beat. I based my DW kit off of his. He has helped me create my own style by watching him do his own. You are the man Chad. 🥁❤️
Thanks for having him on. I’ve been a fan of his drumming since the early 90’s and glad to see him doing well.
Chad is SO underrated!! The dude seamlessly blends so many styles together has a very distinct sound. He's one of the few drummers that you can instantly recognize when you hear him. Absolute legend! Thanks for the rundown. I have learned so many licks from studying his playing for the last 30 years!!
I really like how he blends so much jazz and reggae in his style. Even some Boom Bapp! hahah. He is absolutely amazing...
An inspiration to me for over 20 years, Chad simply lays it down every time. Love the recent gear adds!
We need more Chad videos!
Over the years, for me… the cool drummers list have always included Chad in the mix.😊
Chad is one of the all time greats.
was introduced to chad/311 while shooting pool.my buddy walked in the poolhall, went behind the counter and put on grassroots.. I listened to the cd . stop shooting pool. went right to the store and bought it... right to the house and behind the kit i went. been a fan ever since!!!
My hero almost 30 years
fond memories of catching 311 back in the day in Omaha when they first started out and then hanging out at Joe Voda's Drum City to gawk at and try out all the gear there where I think his mom Linda worked. Miss that place! Still got several mementos of all the shows back then and think I'm somewhere in the crowd in the Homebrew video! You can tell just how much marching band and rudiments influenced his style. That snare sound is iconic! Him and P-Nut form one of the tightest rhythm sections out there!
This dudes always been a beast!!
The best musicians to ever do it, 311.
Salute 🫡 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐 🏆
Hey Good Brother Chad great post love the kit hope you’re doing well!
This just made my day
I've played in Punk and Reggae bands and really enjoyed Sexton's walkthrough and kit description. This man appreciates his art. Thank you!🎵🤩
Chad is the man! What a badass kit!
Chad is one of a kind, amazing drummer.
I great and unique drummer who has influenced me a lot..
Looking forward for 311 in Berlin this June 🤩
I remember my dorm mate convincing me to hitchhike up to Montreal to see them in ‘99. Chads playing blew me away and I’ve been a fan ever since.
One of my best drummers !!!
This guy rocks. Been a big influence on me since late 90s early 2000s. Love his style, and i think very underrated.
Used to shop at Joe Voda's Drum City back in Omaha, and Chad and his mom worked there. I think his mom managed the shop if memory serves. He's always been a drumming inspiration and loved this kit rundown.
Huge huge influence on my playing. Thanks Chad!
311 are legends. Period.
Not a big fan of him since I didn’t grow up on 311 music but Chad seems like a great dude I also love his OCDP days back in the 90s, great content as always! Love from Taiwan 🇹🇼
Can’t believe they still make the Remo starfire. I remember Blas Elias used to play those heads in the 80s
Fuckin best of my generation 132 shows Every 311 day. Evry cruise. Ive been part of it all. A real fan. Chad just rocks period
Great drummer. Listened to them a lot in the 90xs.
I've bought more cymbals than I'd like to admit and still to this day nothing beats HHX for me. There is something special about them
I’ve been studying this guy’s kit for the last 30 years and watching it evolve. So awesome to finally get an up-close breakdown of it from the man himself! Thanks, Chad, for being such a great inspiration to a generation of drummers!
While I'm not 311's biggest fan, I had the chance to meet Chad in the 90s when he came into the shop I worked at. He was the nicest guy, we chatted drums for quite some time and it's rewarding seeing such nice people succeed.
OG all day, Chad is so humble and down to earth. Met him one time back stage at a show, was super nice. A true hero in my drumming life.
That's too funny... I hadn't noticed the little bit of haze in the background. I'm cooking dinner watching this and saw that just as I was noticing the haze in my place from my steak 🤣
Chads a freaking beast!
He got that snare sound. I tune mine as close!
Ayyyye, 311 is still rocking out?? Nice.
First show was at the New Orleans Music Hall. My friends band opened up. Flowstone was their name. Ha!!!
My favorite drummer 🥁
Such a monumental and inspirational musician/drummer/songwriter. 🔥🙌
Thank you Chad for sharing your setup! When I played in bands when I was younger we did some 311 covers and I chased his snare sound for so long. I would have bet my bottom dollar he played piccallo. I even bought one I was so sure...lol ahh life before the internet and this information was found so easily.Chad you are truely one of my favorite drummers ever and you blow my mind to this day!
In my opinion he has one of the best sounding snares
Nice kit. Roto toms are making a come back coming more and more popular. The rocket toms as he calls have been about a very long time. Started by tama I had a set. the name is actually Octobans made famous by the fantastic Stewart Copeland. So old school gear just all renamed by a new generation of players out there.
cool to see. I had a big chad sexton phase back in HS…he’s dedicated to his craft for sure.
by far one of the greatest alive. big influence for me up there with travis barker
Chad is the GOAT.
Chad has been an _enormous_ influence on my playing as a youngster. Miss his OCDP drums & Zildjian though! Thanks for the rundown. 🍻
One of the best sounding snares in the biz.
Love the fact that camera guy is blowing one during the interview 😂😂😂
Had an 18 inch rocktagon crash. Heavy ass cymbal. I cracked it in like 1989
Looking forward to the solo sessions in Vegas!!!
He did not disappoint!
Cool kit! Nice to see him using some electronic stuff!
My favorite stick
Chad The 🐐🥁
Amazing content!!
Remember NOLA 1993? Rigid drummer....We partied, we talked drums, we had fun in the quarter!
You can see how low he hits his snare by the marks on the head. That’s how he gets that 311 ping. So cool. Most people play slightly above the center of the head.
Whenever I think of Chad, I just can’t help but thinking he had the highest pitched snare drum on the planet. I often imagine he went through one or two snare drums a week he had them tunes so hard that they were just explode.
Grassroots
Not so much a 311 fan, but Chad has been excellent. Great sounding kits.
I like Chad's straight ahead drumming approach..he keeps good timing for sure.
Soundsystem is a masterpiece.
Transistor too! 🤘
Great kit and setup.
Surprised he does use a double kick pedal. Even just for drum solos.
I marched in a drum corps with Chad in the 80s, go Sky Ryders!
Dude. They sound good without the mics. 👍
Would have been cool to have more than 28 seconds of soundcheck versus the whole video, but CS has been such a huge influence, take what we can get. I still have one of his sticks he gave me from when he was playing vented OCDP!
I had to make my own 6" tom
Mr Chad Sexton 🥁
311 melts face
Bello/magnifico.💍💍💍💍💍💍
I really like that pros at Chad's level hounds drum companies likes the rest of us for discontinued gear lol 3:33
I have his ride. It's a custom order from Sabian.
cant stand 311 anymore but Chad has and always will be one of my favorite drummers of all time
Boxcar getting the shoutout
3:33 why would they get mad? If they were smart they would continue building them 🤦🏽♂️ like it doesn’t make any sense lol
I agree. I’m still trying to find the perfect ride for my band. Great video. I even thought about using 2 rides but I don’t have any roadies so it’s just me. Less is best right now. Maybe one day
I went through a bunch of rides, ended up with a 20" Paiste Signature Dark Energy mk2, and that sure is "the one" for me, 22" would be awesome to try...
Chad!
Whom inspired me to play drums, no-one comes close
Bands having a Ride cymbal as part of their style, think Dave Lombardo and Slayer or Vinnie and Pantera, it's definitely a thing.
at @11:00 the secret to Chad's snare sound
Indeed, I mean look at where the snare head has been constantly hit, he just hits offset from the center. Having said that, nothing beats those times where he was with OCDP and was rocking a kevlar head
Came here to say that. The stroke pattern waaaay off center, very interesting.
@@CrappyProducts yeaaah, I mean of course big part of the sound is the drummer, but the drum itself improves it
@@drumjedi5301 yeees! the thing is that when I try to make that sound y always find it more comfortable to hit at 10 oclock, but chad here is at 5 o'clock
Noice 😎
7:45 Still miss you B
I love everything about it except those toms. Why they so dead sounding?
Wait so just four ozone crashes? Two 18s, two 20s? Very interesting
I also have that 10” AA Rocktagon! Nice and trashy
