    Thank you for mentioning the balance issue on moving back and being completely sideways then kind of falling as you swing. I think this is what I've been doing a lot lately. I'm a player that hugs the baseline so I have to move back a lot on deep balls. I thought It was just a lack of core strength and timing that was causing me to feel like I was "falling" but I believe I'm frequently standing completely sideways. I'm now going to try to be more conscious of my stance and try to be more open on these strokes. Thanks! :)

      @ldeue4837 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Certain coaches are obsessed with hitting the ball sideways....it's like they think people cannot adapt....One of the first things I practiced was being able to hit the ball on either side with either foot, just this will improve your game a lot.

    Great lesson, Nick! Very useful learning how to deal with this situation, so common in a match.
    What about the same situation but in the backhand side? A new video for that would be great! With the same student, but covering the one handed backhand as well (in case of Karla being a two-handed BH player)!

    Excellent video. The reverse forehand is something I saw young players do when they hit late, and it worked, so I just copied it.
    Didn't know Lansdorp had given it a name, and that it was a proper technique

  • @Stan-B

    Thanks for explaining this. Now I realize why it happens to me from time to time. When I am late with my preparation, or the pace gets too high, the ball gets behind me, and then I am forced to hit the reverse forehand. I thought I was hitting Nadal’s forehands:) It’s good to understand the difference.

    I believe that this reverse forehand has been used on the tour for a long time. I believe that is was named the “ Buggy Whip” Forehand by TV Tennis announcer Bud Collins. I spent lots of time on clay when I was developing my game and playing tournaments so this style of shot was a must if you were running and sliding sideways on wide forehands. Clay really teaches you to adapt your strokes with bad bounces, sharp angles and longer rallies. I also developed an inside out forehead that stayed low and skidded towards the alley. Being able to generate spin and hit while running or sliding is essential on clay.

  • @quiddy
    @quiddy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is popularly used a lot by Jennifer Capriati, Lindsay Davenport, and Myskina. Not only does it help defensively but it is also an offensive shot. Because hitting off the back foot has a natural stability point, you can hit the ball harder

    • @quiddy
      @quiddy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sergiosimbula no in fact if you hit in front of you, you can't hit it as hard. If you read about Amanda Coetzer back in the early 90's, her coach noticed that she was hitting the ball out in front of her and this was preventing her from hitting the ball harder so they made her hit the ball a little later so that her shots would have more anchor stability.
      Also, women have a different source of power. It comes from the hips.
      At any rate, it's the same reason why one of the greatest forehands in the history of tennis, Graf's, is hit rather late, off her back foot. She gets amazing rebound power off her backfoot. If you visualize it, if the ball is out in front of you, it's harder to create pace, so unless ball alread is fast, you won't be able to hit it hard. However if ball is off your backfoot, you will always impart some power to it because youre at the edge of your motion (meaning your arms can no longer stretch beyond that point) so the only way to go is forward.

    Great video, Nik, as ever. I think I do the so called reverse forehand naturally too - never thought about it until now. However, can you advise on how to handle the high reverse forehand i.e. ball behind you but bouncing higher, say when it's at shoulder level or even above. It then transforms into a full helicopter shot :) Is that the right way, basically extend this technique to high balls behind you, or is there a small adjustment to be made to the reverse forehand in that case ? Sometimes, without thinking, I think I use my wrist to direct the ball downward, and tend to lose a little control.
    Thanks again. The first part of the video was very informative when you were feeding Carla short balls as well.
    Here in India, the lockdown has just been opened up, and I can't wait to get back on court, and get those balls fed and get those shots again. If not, even the tennis wall is just a dream right now :) These videos of similar level players as me, really make my day and there's so much to learn from your videos. #gratitude

    Will you ever do a video about how to handle deep late balls on the baseline for a 1 handed BH? Is there a grip switch, or angle adjustment or what? Because whenever I get one of those to my 1 hander, it feels very difficult to get the string bed angle open, and I often hit over the ball too much.

    Reverse forehand is addicting once you use it and a lot of players tend to start using it for every forehand under pressure in matches. It happened to Sharapova, Capriati, and even Serena now. It ruined Sharapova's and Capriati's shoulder and kind of effectively ended their careers. Be careful using this all the time!
