I've used the reel mowers and the drawback is that they don't cut long grass very well, so you're stuck in a loop of having to cut it more frequently. Not bad for a small yard like the one he's shaving though.

My grandmother had a old mower like that but without the grass collector on it and made use grandchildren use it but probably could not get very far with it now but would like to see my niece and nephew use one then I don't think they're complain about having to mow with you riding mower
I made my son use one for environmental reasons. Whenever he complained it didn't work well, I'd buy another one at a garage sale. I didn't know I was supposed to sharpen the blade (AND we had a magnolia tree with leaves like loafers and pods like hand grenades). Today he's 30 and a very hard worker AND he absolutely takes care of his tools and equipment.

The two rectangles sticking up behind the wheels are what sets the height of the blades. Meaning he's purposely cutting the grass that low. I mean he could have a solid reason why. Maybe where he lives his grass grows super fast and he does this to have more time in between cuts...I wouldn't know haha
I used to use one of these at my grandparents allotment about 8-9 years ago as long as it’s maintained correctly its not that hard to push around, definitely harder than a modern lawn mowers… always loved to jog with these the grass would go everywhere and the sound it made simulated a small engine of a dirt bike of some sort 😂

We had one of these when i was like 10, I honestly loved cutting my grass with this, he had that thing for my whole life and I still have it now at 19, I still occasionally use it to cut my front yard bc it's small, it's so fun when yky can push a whole line without it catching on something, so satisfying

Spread some valve lapping compound on the blades and push it around with a few concrete blocks in the catcher. Wash the compound off with a hose and readjust the cutting edge. It will cut like butter.

These mowers cut grass like a scissor. This mowers cutting blade is adjusted wrong, making it hard to push. And the grass should be 2.5-3.0 inches after cutting.
That really does just depend on the grass type and what he is going for as far as turf set up, if it's at Augustine 2.5-3 is too short where as if it's Bermuda, it's too tall

In order for your grass shoots to grow blades lower to the ground you need to chop the shoots down and retrain. He could be trying to achieve a tighter lawn, like a golf course.

Scalping your grass is so bad for you lawn. Weeds grow faster then grass so when your grass is short it allows weeds to take over. When your grass is full and healthy it will chock out the weeds not allowing them to grow. I thought the grass looked good before you cut it. Dark green and healthy.
Not all grass is made to be mowed so short... With the type of grass that he's cutting it should remain having longer blades for a deeper color and a healthier root system

Yeah man, when I was young we were privileged enough to own one of these “lawn mowers” or a scythe. Took about 3-4 hours versus 30-40 minutes.
