Excellent information; exactly what I needed. I didn't realize the PCM outputs only two channel audio. I have a 2.1 Soundbar system, and when I made change suggested, audio was immediately better with clear, crisp voices no matter what else was going on in a scene. Well done; thank you!
Pretty decent video. I have the Sennheiser HD 650 headphones and I've got a half decent integrated audio card. I tried playing with the settings and I can tell a difference between the two. I didn't know that PCM made it "loss-less", but now I do. Just listening to Spotify on high quality, I can tell a difference. Now I need to get back into my old hobby which was ripping CD's to .FLAC.

Currently I have it set to "PassThrough." Is that fine? I don't have any external devices connected to my Bose Soundbar because it only has 1 HDMI ARC port, but it sounds really good using "PassThrough." Should I set it to "PCM" although I plan on adding the additional rear speakers? Thank you!!
PCM would only work with 2 speakers (soundbar & base). However, if you add more speakers, then I suggest you to select auto. Bear in mind that every system is different. All the best!

I am getting a pcm 48 message on my sony receiver and therefore cannot get any sound on my home theatre. My receiver is connected to a Sony tv using optical cable. Everything thing was fine a few days ago, however with the pcm 48 message on the receiver the home theatre is not working. Any suggestion is appreciated. Thanks

No. PCM is when your TV doesn't process the audio - uncompressed. It is a good choice if you got maximum of 2 speakers. If there is more than 2 channels then PCM won't be able transfer all the data. Stereo means 2 channels (speakers). Therefore, using PCM works with stereo audio. I hope it makes sense.

DTS NEO 2.5 applies less compression hence a better quality - closer to the original, higher bitrate.

So if your soundbar is more than 2 channels, like 5.1, you don't set your tv to pcm.
