THIS IS THE BEST TUTORIAL I HAVE EVER SEEN. I DIDN'T HAVE TO KEEP CLICKING BACK AND FORTH ON GIMP AND YOU TUBE, YOUR NARRATIVE PRETTY MUCH HELPED ME ALL THROUGH. THANK YOU.

After selecting the bucket fill tool, look down at the "Tool Options." There should be a section called "Affected Area." Select "Fill whole selection" if it is not selected already. Hopefully this will help.

As a beginner, I am learning more about the functionalities of GIMP by watching your tutorials. So thank you for being such a great teacher and keep up with your awesome videos!!

The layer with the text and the layer with the splats brush both need to be the exact same size for the displace filter to work. To insure that they are both the same size, right click on each of these layers and select "Layer to Image Size." Then try the displace filter again.

APerfidiousDane you know, it was wildly intimidating to look at my screen and feel confident about it. But i wanted to make my own book covers so bad, i just kept replaying the videos and working with it. i focused and treated it like a super advanced game. i think you'll get the hang of it if you clear your schedule and just sit and play with it. I'm Dislexic on top of it and i got it. It's not a five minute app, but if you want good results and you want to do them your self, his videos are perfect for that.

One of the best tutorials I've ever have seen. Very clear and pointed presentation.
And the text effect is just awesome btw. Thanks a lot

In the Displace filter dialog box there are checkboxes to the left of "X displacement" and "Y displacement." Make sure that both checkboxes have a check mark. Also, the layer that you're applying the displace filter to, and the map layer, both MUST be the exact same size. Before applying the displace filter, right click on each layer and select “Layer to Image Size.” Then apply the filter.

The foreground color sets the color that the tools will use. I set the foreground color to white so that I could fill the text with white. I set the foreground color to black so that the splatter brush would be black.

You were the first one that actually got me into it. Didn't know what I was doing but followed along and made the GIMP logo just like you did. Getting into it is how I will eventually learn what the controls do. Without a target like you gave me I didn't know where to start. I'll be back many times before I really get it. If I don't croak first, I'm 70 and a slow learner. But once I learn it I generally do better than the person who taught me. I don't think that will be the case here thought, not by a long shot, but I will get better. Thanks for not wasting peoples time, you got right to it step by step.

I have had Gimp for over a month now. I have to say up till now my experience has been frustrating to say the least. But today I completed my first "layered" project. I love this program that's where the frustration comes from, I want to create everything now! Thanks to you I think the light bulb is starting to go off. It was just my name and I'm sure no one here at my home is excited as I was , but it really looks cool and I'm proud of it. Now I just got to figure out what to do with it : )

Every step is very clear. Thank you so much!!! As I am a beginner, with a lot of tutorials, I cannot understand where a layer came from or what type of filling is used, what it is used for, where the alpha channel is used, etc., and the end result is usually a failure, but with yours, every step is very easy to follow and the end result is a success. You are a top class instructor.

Sometimes, while playing with GIMP, I'll discover a cool technique and then I try to think of a good application for it. Other times I'll see an image that inspires an idea and then I try to implement the idea. Coming up with a good idea, that can be shared in a video of reasonable length, is definitely the hardest part.

It's possible that your layers are not the same size. The layers must be the same size for the displace filter to work properly. If this is the problem, then you can fix it by right clicking on each layer and select "Layer to Image Size."

Nice video, Easy to understand, Every step explained. Useful for both new Gimp users and people with fair knowledge of Gimp. I followed along using my own techniques and the only problem i had was my other layers were not showing up in the displace dropdown menu which was fixed by simply scaling the other layers to image size which you explain how to do.in this video so everything's cool and i ended up with roughly the same effect. Thanks for the tutorial.

I had to go back in with the Splat 02 brush once more before displace would remove any of the text . My displace tool didn't look like yours so that made it extra confusing. But I finally got it. Mine turned out more on the Aqua side.
Thanks! Every day I am more amazed by Gimp.
I like Gimp so much that I created a keyboard shortcut for it. Control-Alt- G pulls it right up.

This question has to do with the technical aspect of recording this tutorial. I noticed that you recommended the up and down arrows for moving layers, this struck me as I've tried using Camtasia to record my videos of GIMP operations. The issue in those recordings is that I am unable to drag and drop the layers and I wondered if perhaps, you have the same issue. My issue seems to be that somewhere the two programs conflict...just wondering if you have the same issue.
