Breitling watches are always super well built. And say what you want, they have a great history and have never apologized for having their own design style. A legit watch. They went through a phase in the recent years where people were turned off with their size, design language, marketing etc. But in reality I think they are ready for a comeback in appreciation.
I bought these exact two. Went with the SO42 over the Avenger, but couldn’t get the Avenger out of my head, so I ended up adding it later on. Both are fantastic.

I did own the white dial SO 42 on rubber, but sold it to buy the black dial on bracelet. Both beautiful watches, but they do wear small for a 42. The Avenger would have been my next watch, but the 53mm lug to lug kills it for my 6.5 “ wrist.
Nice comparrison Rob!Those are both great watches. The Superocean has been on my list for a long time. I would also want the yellow dial. Yellow dial divers are really cool, in my humble opinion. Yellow is one of the few colors still visible at depth in sea water. I don’t know whether or not I will ever dive again, but yellow and blue are by dive watch colors of choice.

I own a late 90s era Superocean Steel Fish and it's a great piece. Picked Mines up for a steal (paid a grand for it) a couple years ago from one of my watch flipping acquaintances since he was tryna offload it quickly and it's been one of my go to's since then. Thought it'd be to big for me at 44mm at first but you get used to the size quickly. Thing is built like a tank
The Colt A17313 is the best fusion between the Avenger and SO42. It is 41mm diameter, 11mm tall and 20mm between the lungs with 95% of the Avenger look.
Avenger wins, the superocean is a level below. Avenger took the chronomat bezel and rider tabs from 80s (also used on the Colt) and retains it for future generations. We should be thankful for that. The Avenger is the rugged all action watch for everyone who likes their watch to be seen. Its not for all, but get it on the bracelet, its value for money with the chronograph on the b13.

Make this in a 39mm. with slightly curved 47mm. Lug to Lug, and 12mm. thick, made of Titanium, with Titanium Bracelet,, with a dark red Sunburst Dial, and I'm All In...!

I'm looking hard, but other than the Breitling name, I'm having a hard time seeing the value in these watches. They are nice, but I feel like you can get all the same stuff (minus the name) from other brands at considerably less cost.
Considering most Steinharts (or many other micro brands for that matter) have the same movement and goes for $450, then we know where the other $4000 goes...
Love both of these. If you go secondary, you can get some incredible deals. I bought my Avenger Seawolf for 1.5k which to me is just a stunning deal for what you get.
Have the Super Ocean in 42 on blue rubber strap, actually like the look on strap, the bracelet is crazy expensive, replacing the official strap while not inexpensive is affordable. I agree don't need another GMT, and the strap actually looks better as well, too much steel on the Avenger, but probably buy the bracelet and then buy the black strap as well as putting as slightly bling to bling on bracelet. I know you like bracelets, but some watches look better on a good strap. Looking at an off market bracelet for the SO, good ones can be had at a fraction. Strapcode and some others.

I always appreciate the side by sides! Both are great watches but the Avenger has more Breitling flavor.

My wife gifted me the Superocean Automatic 42mm white dial as you're showing and I love it. My wrist is 6.75in and fits perfect.

Not DLC I was told by the boutique. Vulcanised rubber.
The older one was rubber, these new ones are DLC.
