Holy cow! I had no idea one could find gold in Indiana. I'm gonna have to add this to the list of hobbies for when I retire one day! So far, all of them involve creek stomping. Fishing, arrowhead hunting, and now prospecting! Lol...
Heck yes. Great retirement hobby. If you want to find gold panning head to Gose Creek or Jordan Creek in Morgan Monroe State Forest. You can still find spots int there where you can find gold in about every pan. You won't get rich, but it is fun. Thanks for watching !
Wow, you guys cleaned up! Some serious gold in those pans. Love your setup. I enjoyed watching your video very much, well filmed and narrated! Got a new subscriber here.👍 GL & HH
Dang Dave! That is awesome gold. Hard to believe you are in Indiana as it is so chunky. I needed this trip this morning. Gotta get my back squared away and find some gold of my own. Thanks.
If you ever make it up here, it is the least I could do is loan you a dredge and put you on it. You have given me great entertainment on your channel and on the Blackwater Explorers channel. Miss those videos, where you guys found all those treasures.
GREAT video!! I've never panned for gold before, but would like to start. I'm up in Northwest Indiana, (Portage), near Lake Michigan. Do you know of any places that have yielded results for gold up here? Also, when you "swish" the pan around and the rocks leave the pan, how do you know you're not letting gold slip away? Thanks in advance.
The circular swishing is when the pan is centered around a low spot in the pan, causing the gold to go into that low spot. That low spot is also where there are grooves in the pan where the gold likes to sit. Gold is approximately 18 times heavier than water and is also twice as heavy as lead, If you do just enough swirling and tilting just to remove lighter stuff, your gold will stay behind, Too practice, get a gold pan and place some lead BBs in it with some other gravel. If you can keep the BBs from escaping your pan, you will have even better luck with gold. I don't know much about Michigan, other than there are Facebook groups that are active prospectors in Michigan. They also use machines to get gold on the Beaches of the Great lakes. Thanks for Watching. Just looked at your comment closer and you are in Northern Indiana, not Michigan. The Glaciers travelled through Michigan and Down through most of Indiana. There are places all over Indiana that have gold. Look for Large boulders in streams and you will find gold
Thanks for watching and subscribing. I have a little gold from Kentucky. A guy I used to be in a club with knew another guy that owned a gravel washing business. He got some of the material that collects around the auger and it had gold in it. Good Luck !
Really good video. I've been wanting to go panning and stuff for a awhile but I wasn't sure how much gold would be here in Indiana. I only live about a half hr away from Lafayette and luckily where I'm at is alot of creeks and bedrock. Thanks for the video.
Definitely. When this video was shot, I was using a Nikon, which is great for photography, but not video. Hopefully, my newer videos have gotten better and will continue to improve. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching !! No, you do not need a permit to pan for gold in Indiana generally, unless it is at one of the Parks that requires it. Owen Putnam and Morgan Monroe State Forest require you to get a free permit, so they know who is doing what in the park. I believe you can get those permits online now or you can visit the Ranger station in the parks. I know MMSF provides a map too. Typically, people are looking for others to go with them when they go there, so if you frequent gold clubs in Indiana, you can find out more. As for other rivers and streams, if they are navigable streams, you just need permission from a land owner to access the water. AS for non-navigable streams, you need permission of the land owner that has ownership of stream to the middle, etc..... If I were just starting out again, I would join the Facebook groups of the Indiana clubs to get more details.
Someone just mentioned this the other day on a Facebook group. I know the nozzle size maximum is 5 inches. I believe the hose can be 6 or 7 inches. I know a 4 inch does plenty well :) Thanks for watching !
@@MidwestDavesGoldProspecting yea based on what ive seen in your videos a 4 or 5 inch is plenty enough dredge, here in N.C you can run any size u want but any bigger than a 6 would be overkill for most rivers.

Cool video guys I'm going to brown county Indiana sat but I have a lot of trouble with getting salt creeks placier gold..I want to build what y'all are using..do you guys have a how to build ?? I work too hard and come away with nothing the way I'm doing it.. the cleanup is extremely difficult.. I know I have a great spot because I found a nice deposit any advice I would appreciate or how to build the Dredge you guys have
The dredges are each built from the Pink sheets of insulation you can buy at Menards. I believe they are 4 layers glued together with Gorilla glue. I think on the entire dredge, I used 4 or 5 large bottles of gorilla glue....probably about 65 bucks worth.. I would have to get you measurements for the initial rectangle you are building. Once the rectangle is done, you have to cut out the area for the jet log and the sluice and glue in an axle on the bottom. Also added 2 tubes for pins to hold the wheels on. I then covered it all in aluminum I cut from a 4 X 8 sheet. I glued all of the panels on with the gorilla glue and then finished each corner with thick aluminum channel. The sluices were wither Keene or Buckabilly (my wife's). I made the crash boxes from thick aluminum I riveted together. The engine mounts were welded together in my garage along with Keene mounting plates. I also made the jets. There is a ton of custom fabricating here and you have to mount the engine in a balance point. I have a koi pond, so I could float the dredge as I was building it. I built this dredge as big as I did to get good buoyancy for faster water, since my Keene Ultra Mini was questionable in fast water. Thanks for watching !
Thanks for watching, I always wondered about the white river, especially near Martinsville, since such large pieces and quantity have come out of MMSF. Are you in that area ?
OK. Would be nice to try other streama near MMSF, where they have bedrock. I know Bedrock being exposed in MMSF is due to the grade at which the water flows through Deadman's hollow and Jordan's hollow. There have to be more location sin that areas that are really good. I know the Bradsford Woods location that Indiana University owns has some great gold too, but one of the gold clubs ruined the chances of going there again.
Thanks for the video! I’ve been catching gold fever this year. I’ve been doing tons of research in hopes of doing some panning next year, but I assumed I was going to have to travel to CO, MT, or CA; this video was shot in my backyard! My question is, would one have a similar result (scaled down obviously) if just a pan and sluice were used? Or the gold in the area mainly only going to be retrieved via the techniques and with the equipment you had in this video? Thanks!
Check out the Morgan Monroe State Forest Video at the top of my channel, which shows me panning. Can be a great place to start. Tons of small gold. Then try creeks with large granite boulders. Try finding bedrock. Good Luck, you will find gold.
