One Palestinian child is being killed every 15 minutes in Gaza as Israel drops American made bomb after bomb. This makes me feel emotions like lament and a deep furious anger expressed in tears of frustration as it should anyone with a conscience. It's Holy Spirit, not "self-righteous priests", who is calling us to compassion and to resist evil with a cruciform/non-violent love. Isaiah 26:20 is expressing a view-point of divine retribution, to interpret this in a way as to turn an eye away from the sufferings of others isn't loving. Being hidden away with God doesn't come at the expense of solidarity with those experiencing oppression. There is always peace, the example of Etty Hillesum is compelling, but this doesn't negate the loving solidarity of a lament that "weeps with those who weep". Privilege does isolate many of us from solidarity. "You're not going to influence Vladimir Putin, Hamas or Benjamin Netanyahu..." Instead I think we should say along with Jesus, "Blessed are the peacemakers".
I also posted my discomfort at this encouraging of the flock towards passive quietism. I appreciate your comments. Blessings on the ACTIVE and VOCAL Peacemakers who stand in solidarity and kinship with Christ in “the least of these.”
