I’ve been a huuuge fan of this series for years. I’m honestly surprised the series doesn’t get more hype. Hopefully, now that these exist, people have a great entry point into the series and we can all get pumped when they finally announce the next game in the series! I’m really happy you get to experience them and I hope you are having a great time 👍 I’m currently waiting for my Playasia copy.

Considering I am an Etrian Odyssey whore, yes I'm picking it up this collection and I'm so happy you're enjoying the game so far. Now from scouring through TH-cam I have seen some of the differences between this and the original versions and for the most part very good.
For those starting out, this is game tests your pacing through the labyrinth. Though it tempts you to push forward sometimes its not best not to risk it for the biscuit and head back to town. Also once this item Ariandne Thread is unlocked don't ever leave town without it. Always carry at least one. Lastly some of the icons you use have dynamic effects like the treasure box will open when you open the treasure box in the overworld. Or if you found a shortcut that goes both ways it will change to yellow signifying you found it.

The funny thing about the various difficulty settings is that Expert is the 'normal' difficulty setting.
Etrian Odyssey games were always difficult to go through and very punishing if you overextended, but you can still steamroll the game despite that difficulty once you've figured out the way they work.
So for everyone new to this series, be patient. Take your time to figure out what the enemies are weak to. Figure out how the ailments and binds work. Knowledge is power in these games.

Nice review! I've barely played 1 of the Etrian games, but now that it's available on Switch and it doesn't cost 200$ and up for each game, I will get that Trilogy for sure! A few notes:
The soundtrack is done by the man, the myth, the legend: Yuzo Koshiro himself. Yes, THAT Yuzo Koshiro, the Actraiser/Streets of Rage/Ys guy. He's done all the tracks for the entire series and he almost never misses.
For those curious, if you're playing on PC you get the best of both worlds, since you can use a Controller and the mouse simultaneously and (like any good modern game) the on-screen prompts will constantly change to whichever you used last. Using the Switch or Steamdeck touchscreen with a stylus does give you a bit of that classic "playing on the DS vibe" though, admittedly.
Heh, if you think "Basic" is bad, try out "Expert" sometime. It's brutal. But in a good way (most of the time).

I love first-person dungeon crawlers and I could see myself easily binge-playing these games all the way through. 😆Based upon what I have seen from checking the tracking status, I should probably get my copy sometime next week and that will probably be perfect timing as that's probably when I'll just be finishing up Ara Fell.

It gives us hope that we will see more DS and 3DS remasters to be ported in the future! I hope it gets a lot of support, not only for Atlus’s sake but also so we see more support to bring titles like this going forward. Thanks for sharing! Thanks for the recommendation! Still saving up the money to get the Origins Collection. I’ve been an EO fan for years, originally drawn in by the mapmaking of all things. I love drawing maps, and I like the map system of EO games. I also always had the tendency to build my own stories for my parties. You can’t give me a group of five people with no known histories or characteristics and expect me _not_ to build an entire story around them. I was especially attached to my EO/EO2 party, thanks to the password transfer (a system I wished more games had, because it was the reason that EO/EO2 stuck with me so well, and the reason why games like the Golden Sun series were some of my favorites).
Also hoping the 3DS games make it to the Switch. EOV was my favorite one, mostly because of the Dragoon class (you can solo all of EOV with one Earthlain-Dragoon (you can also do it with a Therian-Rover, but I like guns), and I find that pretty funny), but also partially because I loved the concept of the different races. I’m also the weirdo who liked the Legendary Titles system more than subclassing.
Maybe if I’m lucky, Atlus will pull an Atlus and the collection will be discounted by the time I can afford it.

    To tell a story
    Many years ago
A young Deo picked up the first etrian Odyssey game for 10 dollars in EB
    Best 10 buck investment ever
Since then I've pretty much got every single game either physically or digitally
And now I hear people complain it's price
    I'm sorry but huh?
Youre getting 100 plus hours for 40 bucks if you don't like it it's on you
But 80 bucks for 300 hours of content
If anyone is on the fence about the price
    Just get it
It's well worth it and honestly I am so stoked to have them digitally instead of an aging cartridge that may fail at some point

Fighter, Mage, Tank, Cleric, with a fifth slot for whatever you may like to add. That way, you are guaranteed to have a consistent damage output (fighter), the ability to quickly take out key targets (mage), the ability to survive fights (tank), and the ability to prolong your adventure in the labyrinth (cleric).

Anyway im playing back to back on my party on Switch and Steam and bought a Steam Deck some weeks ago just for the games, beat the first Stratum Boss in EO3 today on Switch but gotta do the same tomorrow on Steam Deck, oh and i bought a Switch Stylus from US cause i live in Finland in Europe, works well on both, anyway having a mad blast, can't wait to see what my parties can do fully developed.

    Nice review.
Most classes in the Japanese originals of these games use English names, the Landsknecht for example being "Sodoman" - Swordsman but in the Japanese sillable system. Of course having a "Swordsman" class that can just as well be played as an Axewoman would be a bit wierd so maybe because of this they went with a German name (Landsknecht was the name for medival German mercenaries). It kinda keeps the spirit of using a foreign word for a class name alive - even though all English speakers have troubles pronouncing it, lol.

I would have more appreciated that the Untold Game content from the 3DS for 1+2. They are the definitive versions of the first two games, and their connected story, and included the option to play the original games as they were.
The other issue is the pricing. $10 more than the original DS games, and if you only buy one then you still (essentially) have to pay for the bundle, but you get less content for your money.
EO3 is weird. The boat mechanic is the worst in the series. Its interesting at first, but there is a ton of weird trial and error to solve the navigation puzzles. You fan be one space from a location and your boat will return home, because you didn't land before running iut of supplies. It is the lest best of the games and the springboard that got us the fantastic EO4 airship hybrid exploration mechanic. It was the one game that needed the Untold treatment the most imo.
I currently don't think i will be getting this collection, as i already own the first two games in both forms and there isn't anything new for me here.
I might be more interested in a 4,5 and X bundle, but without the physical release there isn't much motivation not to wait for a sale.
Supporting these games sadly will not assist with production of new EO games, as the EO team was crushed and splintered apart by the SEGA acquisition of ATLUS. Forcing some to leave and others to be put on (under) other projects as worker ants. With three of them ultimately leaving the video game industry altogether. 😢
Several members of the EO team did go on to make an EO-like game, where the map drawing mechanic was brought to the real world. The game displayed the grid and player location and direction... Thats it. You are to draw the map on a sheet of grid paper. There is also a mode for auto mapping in that game too. But its not available in the demo, and I couldn't get very far because im not able to read any Japan kanji. Lol its a simplified game from EO but I noticed it randomly on the Japanese eshop because of the artist character style, saw it had a demo and then learned the truth about the EO team and SEGA wrecking things for them.

After how fondly I remembered EO Untold, I was not expecting the first game to frustrate me as much as it did. I severely underestimated how much info gathering, floor jumping and Gladsheim fixed the inconsistent difficulty curve, to the point that I skipped the Clarent Hollows, especially once I read about the superboss' moves.
The second game let me down as well thanks to how much an LP insisted that most of the questionnable design choices stayed in the first game. They didn't: the early game still was deceptively hard, the balance was still all over the place, having one-way only shortcuts annoyed me to no end and the petrification spell for some reason won't be counted in the list of things a neutralizer shot can fix, making the fifth stratum the most annoying in the trilogy for me. This meant that I skipped the sixth stratum again.
The third game is the one I consider to still hold up, with plenty of tweaks that fixed the experience for the most part. Which makes me wonder what happened in the sixth stratum as all the cool level design was dropped to instead have me deal with enemies that changed my formation, floors that take the darkness gimmick way too far with giant mazes of pitfalls and spinning squares and a superboss that even the wiki calls one of the most frustrating fights in the series. The special move of regenerating tentacles makes no sense to implement when you're not allowed to run away and re-destroy them, as if having to chase down the inexplicably fast tentacles wasn't tedious enough. Special mention to the tentacles hiding in rooms filled with other FOEs, which I killed on Easy mode after the dark mazes had already tested my patience, if you screw up the solution you have to wait 14 in-game days.

I can see why you didn't like the first 2 games but your reasoning is mostly pretty bad. One reason might just be that you played the untold games. I never played them but the huge quality of life jump and gameplay differences is pretty huge like making a bad party can basically lock you out of post game.(only classes you need for post game is medic and protector unless you want to go through hell by using only troubadour or mists. Also balancing is based around levels in eo1 so grinding is the best solution for everything. So do not use stalker playing etrian odyssey) in eo2 just grind bosses and you will be fine for the entire playthrough(they give so much money and exp it is crazy). Even with a bad party this game is pretty easy. For petrification just use an item so I have no clue about your troubles there. Eo2 just kinda sucks though(that LP was technically right. They tried to innovative a lot and it mostly sucked and canceled out the actual improvements.) the best thing you can do if you struggle in the original games is to research online. like skill charts, boss move sets and more.

i think 80$ for 3 games is ok but 40$ for each isn't 😅 it should be 20-30 tops

Now if they only did this with 4, next, nexus and leave the UnTold Stories in their grave

Great for PC or Steam Deck because of potential modding but the collection is quite overpriced. I recommend waiting for a sale.

Not too hard, one kind of has a difficulty choice in the sort of party you choose to build. Not insulting you! I remember the 1st EO when I was young, and it used to be hard, and I did respec back then, but generally hate losing levels, so because I am used to EO games, I rarely find myself in the position to re-spec much.
"Lunatic" is a "hype" word to make people feel better. The hardest difficulty is the regular DS one. I feel one should try them at that difficulty so you get an idea of how it was back then. You will just need to be even more careful and go to the inn way more often, so the pace becomes slower unless you are a speed runner that knows what you are doing (myself, I hate speed running an *RPG* game-rather let my imagination lead me slowly.) But I can assure you it's not the hardest game out there, despite the annoyances.
    Glad it's fun!

For sure fun, but would be a disservice to newcomers to not mention that it is a little tougher on what the game refers to as the default difficulty setting.

This genre is most definitely an acquired taste. It's an extremely unpopular genre and often has very low budgets. If you wanna get into these games, start with EO3, bcuz EO 1 & 2 are stale
The series started getting good with EO3 when they improved on so much about the game and added depth
The first 2 had remakes on the 3DS to fix these issues and so much more. It's a shame they never got ported instead. The Untold remakes were superior in erry possible way
These games are also very overpriced. Don't bother buying them until they're at least 50% off. If there is a physical copy for console, I recommend buying that instead as digital purchases on NS are non-refundable

There is no Main story though so its not for me.... also the constantly stopping and mapping the whole area is so disruptive and tedious!!

you might like the untold games on the 3ds. basically remakes of 1 and 2 but with a core story and a set group of characters. really adds a new life to the game if you prefer a main story.

Not really worth it, except maybe EO 3.
Pros : Nicer graphics. More portraits. Has Auto map option(for the lazy)
Cons little people may care about since its not this type of game to begin with: No Untold story mode.
Cons : Less classes than Untold 1/2. Some classes not unlocked from start (like Ronin). EO 1 is missing "gather information" flavor texts. Cannot report map completion (which would allow you to warp to stairs. Quality of life reasons). DS music don't quite mix with HD graphics.
P.S. Expert is the original difficulty. Basic is for... noobs who want to play the game. And Picnic is for grinding (exp boost) or to give to your 2 year old child when they steal your game from you (so that you don't die).
P.S.S Still a good game. But the missing QoL issues makes those who already tasted it feel... extra frustrated.

Not worth it IMO. The 3DS versions are superior. Thankfully, I have a 3DS and all EO games on there.
