- This video has been on the net for awhile but suffered from audio and picture issues. I have removed most of the annoying hum/buzz and improved the picture quality.
I’m Emile Martyn. I made the last portion of this film on Milford. He was a builder plasterer by trade. His house on Paige’s street in New Orleans had its low wall outside painted pink with silver glitter sprinkled into it. He was a proud guy, a sharp dresser and a real gent. Richard Knowles and my dad were there in the day. My fad asking questions. Richard helping out. A previous comment mentions Alfred Williams, who was related to Stanley Stephens. I knew Stanley, he was a superb and disciplined drummer. Softly spoken, perfect time keeper and taken too soon. Sammy Rimington has footage of him I think. Maybe Norbert Susemihl too. If you’ve read this far you probably know them. If not…
Thanks and Blessings, it's an honor to see these early great Drummers.
Thank you for placing this footage online. My name is Renee Alfred Ezell. Alfred Williams is my Great Grand Father. Thank you!
According to Barry Martyn, the sound track to the film was lost. So, Barry had a sound engineer friend in Los Angeles synch as best he could the images with the disc recordings, "Drum Solos" (Circle Records) recorded by Baby in 1946. He did a damn good job. Thanks to Barry Martyn!
This is an amazing video. Thanks very much for uploading : )
He is beautiful. He is PLAYING the instrument. Just by the look you can tell. Teach us oh great ones!
Here is a good drummer .. th-cam.com/video/7Kx1GVYPOos/w-d-xo.html
The first big name in drumming ( drum kit)) and should be the starting point for everyone who takes up the instrument and then look who came after the early pioneers of the instrument
Thank you for posting this video. My Great-Grandfather is Josiah "Cie" Frazier!
Your great-grandfather was one of the greatest drummers of all time. Do you play?
@@musopaul5407 Cie gave a bunch of us a mini drum lesson after a concert in Pasadena in the late seventies. Great guy!
I've seen this before but still great to see it again, thank you for the upload.
Thank you very much , ❤
Beautiful History

Wow! The legend ❤😊👍
If you have any other footage of him or his grandson Stanley Alfred Stephens my uncle that would be awesome.
Sorry, this is all I have. I just cleaned up a video that has been on youTube for quite awhile.
Where’s his set?
Remind me of Art B.
reminds me of an old psychiatric movie from the 1940's
It seems like any time he played a solo on the traps he used matched grip so with the basket stand and no need for an angled snare drum, why didn't drummers in these days just use matched grip all the time?
Before the hi hat was made?
Pretty sure they can remove that buzz now.
wow no hhat
Awful job on the soundtrack! Should have got a modern decent drummer to play along to the visuals rather than bodge the sound together from a completely different recording!
Interesting. I've seen good players stick out the pinky on their right hand but here we have a great, great player sticking out the ring finger. That's a new one on me. I love it. There's just no single "best" way, is there? Thanks for the effort, guys. Cool video.
Be e lino!
Thank you for this .
Sure the guys at this time played on natural calf/ goat skins, is'nt it ?
The plastic skin was invented about 1956 - at least that is when they were put into production. Before that it was nearly all calf skin.
@@SAHBfan If only nowadays they were a little easier to obtain and at affordable prizes, the Sound IS so much more rich and Natural .
@@buddabirne4661There are drumset calfskin available but they cost a lot because most drummers and institutions don't buy them. When more drummers are buying them, the cost will go down somewhat....
still love it!!
