@@ettmaaa5829 it only alerts if police are actively running radar. Detectors aren't police detectors, as they are radar detectors. It will alert only if they running radar/laser.
I've had my r3 for about two weeks now, I'm really impressed with it. Noisy at first, but now that I have locked out most of the stores and speed signs in my area it's fairly quiet. On straightaways the range is magnificent, range is minimized on winding roads but still plenty of warning time to hit the brakes. There's a lot of settings, very customizable. I believe it was worth the money
I just bought the r3 yesterday and set it just like you recommend on your website. And literally turned on to a little stretch of highway the detector started going off immediately. I started heading down the road I'm kind of being cautious because I'm brand new to this. Then somebody flashes their headlights another half mile up the road it starts going berserk and there's a cop on a motorcycle shooting radar at me....lol. worked flawlessly and almost zero false alarms on my way into work... Thanks for all of your information that you put out. it's awesome!! Really helped my decision process on purchasing my radar detector.

I have been running Passport/Escort for years and never thought I would have switched to a Uniden product as I always looked at them as cheap and not reliable. I just sold my Escort 9500 IX because of the false car sensor alarms i was getting especially on the highway. At first i didnt know why it was going off so much and i just thought it was a fluke because i don't use the detector all the time. Then I started to look into it and i kinda figured it was the car car sensors triggering it and i was right.. Anyway, just sold the 9500ix and was just about to pull the trigger on a max 360 and by accident, i stumbled onto a Uniden r3 page and it was all over after that.. What a well thought out radar.. I don't need WiFi and car connectivity. I drive a 2002 vehicle and i want my radar to work. Period. I then found your Videos here on U tube and you do an Excellent job of explaining all the intricacies of every radar without really bashing one or another.. Thank you for your honest opinion.. It definitely helped me purchase my new R3.
I’ve been with escort for 30 years. i’m now using the Uniden R3. love it. I only wish you could set up city and save it and set up highway and save it. that way i could just switch to highway with K band turned off and then switch to city where they use K band when i’m in the city. the problem is what ever settings you select they effect all three programs. City, Highway and Advance.
I just got mine few days ago, thanks to you. I have to say, great buy. It filters crap and alerts you far away from any gun. Very easy to set up and thank you again for the recommendation. I had to upgrade from V1.37 to 1.5. Super easy to do. I love this RD.
I absolutely love my R3, I will put its performance against any detector on the market!!! I gave 300.00 for it, so it wasent cheap, but I have one small issue that I'm struggling getting used to. It feels so cheap, and light weight kinda like a toy from the dollar store. It literally has no weight to it at all. Please dont get me wrong, its extremely high quality and it works great. It can sniff out a radar several miles away!!

Hey I just wanted to say thanks for the recommendation, last month I got this radar detector and can say it is WAYYY better than the cobra rad480i I had. Took it on a trip from SD to Las Vegas, and there were times were we had minutes to prepare for police.

First off, thanks for your outstanding tutorials and demo's. I just got a R3 to replace a Excort 9500ix. In a nut shell, I liked the GUI interface software when setting up the 9500, but it is what it is. I've had my 9500's for 10+ years (got 2) but with more and more cars with BSM, it runs me crazy in the city with it's alerts. They have saved me many times, city and hwy so i can't say I'm not going to miss their ability to detect. But I just got an R3 today, updated it to the latest database and it already came with the latest fw. I didn't find a seperate database update tool so I used the FW updater to do this. Seemed to work (didn't brick the unit). So, I have a LONG trip coming up through 4 states so we are going to put it to the test. Again, great video's and thanks for the time/effort you put into it. Oh and yes, I subscribed..
I just got my R3 a week ago as well. Totally impressed so far. I drove from south Mississippi on I-55 headed north today, 11/18/19, and had a 3+ mile detection of a Miss. Hwy Patrol vehicle just south of Jackson, MS. I was stunned. There were numerous hills between the first alert and finally getting to the officer. I had a more realistic detection on the return trip which was approximately three quarters of a mile and he came in to view hidden in the median with about an eighth of a mile to go. He was aimed towards me but had a huge patch of trees directly in front of him that apparently absorbed a fair amount of his signal. I was not speeding in either case but had ample time to avoid a ticket in both detections, the first one by a ridiculous amount if I had been. I'm sold on the R3. It has the latest firmware 1.50 and it will false on some BSMs but I'm OK with that because usually you can tell what caused it to false. Newer vehicles that you expect to have BSM and they are normally close, so far usually within 2 or 300 feet and almost always traveling along side in the same direction on a 4 lane until he gets out of range. I set mine up just as Vortex Radar recommended.

Hi, I'm in greater Seattle like you, and I picked up an R3 thanks to your recommendations. So far, I've only noticed the police using Ka and Laser. K band goes off constantly with default settings, but it's always been either speed monitoring signs or falses. I was just about to disable K band entirely until I read your recommendation to keep it on but at reduced sensitivity. If K band is used around here for speed monitoring, which jurisdictions are doing it? I see oodles of marked cars running Ka, and I also got lased by the State Patrol just north of the Tacoma Dome. I was driving a legal speed so all was well. I've yet to see K band being utilized by an actual cop.

After watching all your videos I bought the uniden 3. Haven't regretted it at all. The thing has saved me thousands in tickets and bond money. I use it on my zx14 and in my other vehicles. It goes off far in advance giving you plenty of time to slow down. Even on the zx going over 130. It also has alerted me when a cop was trying to creep up from behind. I always used the passports but I do think this one is just as good or better. I'm hard wiring mine today because the cig lighter cord is always a real bitch. I'm putting a plug I can use on all my vehicles . Looks like I need a 2 amp fuse correct?..btw is there any accessories I can buy that would be a light or something like that or something I can put inside my helmet so I don't have to keep looking down at it?
If you live in New Jersey I suggest turning on MRCD, got pulled by a state trooper today running it while I had it turned off thinking it wasn’t in use.
That would be the first report of MRCD being used in NJ. There’s also many other more likely reasons why your detector didn’t alert. Would you mind posting the info on the forums so we could all learn more and help you troubleshoot?
So I had a fairly unique question, I live down south and down here it gets extremely hot in the car during the summer. It’s killed the display on some of my cheaper radars in the past and killed several dash cams completely. So I was wondering if you happen to know the temperature rating on the R3 or not, I’d rather not have to bring it in and out of the car or just get something that holds up to heat better
Thanks for another informative video. The R3 has been awesome. I should have bought one years ago. Luckily i haven't had a ticket in 10+ years and now i always have the R3 running. I just finished installing a Blendmount and a Mirror tap, all is good.
Right now I use highway mode with max sensitive everywhere when I'm traveling somewhere that I've never been because I don't know what to expect. I use city mode during low speed areas with a bunch of lights and stores. I don't get crazy falses but I really like the ka priority. In Maryland I am liable to go to NY so I leave it on wide. I've tested it in police central aka VA. When I'm in DC and around the the more heavily populated part of Maryland. The radar goes crazy. So many speed cameras and speed traps. On every street and block. There has to be a speed setting to turn off some of the alerts at lower speeds. Lol quiet ride I forgot.
You'll need KA wide in Florida. The county Sheriffs run stalker guns all the time. I got busted speeding with one going the opposite direction while the piggie was moving. Wish I had a radar then!
Master Yoda, yes Florida is a sneaky State. I almost got nabbed heading into downtown Orlando, lucky my ESP was strong that day. 35 mph zone, doing 40, someone passed me doing 55 mph. On my way to an interview, unsure of where to go/parking situation. I was tempted to follow the native. Luckily, after hitting 45 mph, I started to slow down... Bam my Escort Passport 850 x50 went crazy. A police officer walked out into the middle of the road and popped the radar on. Of course that guy was waived into a parking lot with 5 or 6 other victims getting tickets by other officers. I was luck, and was just able to get close enough to 35 mph, that they let me go by. Also, heading north on route 417, Lake Jessup area by the toll plaza. Motorcycle police mostly with Laser or Ka radar guns. Very hard to see until you are within range. Overall, Florida wsd not as bad as New Jersey. Luckily my 8500 x50 is still performing well, and I mostly take the same routes in New Jersey. My radar is dash mounted with velcro (kind with easy release tabs). Poor man solution (I had a few extra and allows me option to remove if needed). Note: never take any radar warnings for granted.
I have this r3 and I love it. The display is beautiful and the radar detector is Very accurate and hands-down the best radar detector on the market for the money I have mine melted with a bracket right underneath my mirror and it worked perfect I have mine set up with the speed and compass in the scan display and I happen to get a lot of compliments on this radar detector I have it in a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E 63S

just ran into an issue today. While running down the highway, going past a GPS lockout with my R3 I noticed that the amber light on my remote hardwire was flashing madly waaaaaay after it should have been. Behold! There was RCMP in the center median using RFR... Never got a bogey alert or so much as a peep from the audible alert. I guess if the k band Radar gun was being picked up at the same frequency as my GPS lockout (or at least that's my theroy) then this would be classified as "normal"???? Any info on this dangerous situation would be greatly appreciated. I'm going out first thing in the morning to delete my GPS lockout there regardless that's for sure.
I just got my Uniden R3 and set them to your recommended settings. The detector is very quiet except when it finds some real threats. Thanks a lot for that. I need to explore better mounting options. I am a little unsatisfied with both of these mounting cups... Both make the detector shake at speed and a lot on bumps. The other question I have is what cable do I need to hard wire into my fuse box?

I've been researching radar detectors for several days. Based on your videos and website, I agree the R3 is one of the best, if not the best RD for the money. But I have one question. If I have a newer Honda or Acura with BSM, lane assist, collision, etc., is the R3 still a good choice, if I can use it at all?
I'm honestly not sure if it'll be an issue. Hopefully not. I don't know too many people that drive those vehicles. You can always order one, try it out, and return it if it doesn't work. Stinger is the only company I know of that offers a radar detector with a feature specifically designed to filter out radar coming from your own vehicle. I'd be curious to hear your experience after you purchase and whether or not your vehicle causes the detector to false.

My Toyota Sienna has those sensors in the side mirrors when cars are next to you and behind you backing up and my 9500ix does not beep. And that's an old detector. Is that BSM?

I would think if you're in City you leave it on City if you're on Highway you leave it on Highway. The advanced mode is if you want to make technical changes primarily to it's sensitivity. I wouldn't leave it on advanced unless your extremely knowledgeable with the product.
Does the R3 allow you to get alerts on your phone? I live in VA where radar detectors are illegal so it is important that the detector is never readily visible. Sometimes this means it's not even visible to me, the driver. One reason I liked the V1 is because it has the option of a concealed display. The downside is that it's detectable.

Hey Vortex, I live in Eastern Washington and I'm thinking about getting the R3. I've seen online that in Pierce County (west side) uses Stalker. Would I be okay with turning on KA narrow if I pretty much stay only in the east side? I do drive on the highway frequently so I'm just afraid that a trooper from the west side comes to the east with a Stalker ATR. Do you know if the WA troopers use them or is it only the county sheriffs/local LEOs that use them?

Good information on the R3. However, is there an updated article on the website since June 2017? The firmware has been updated in 2018 with the same info as of Jan. 2020.
I like the ranges and its undetectable... leaning more towards the r3 although Fry's electronic this week has the max360 $200 off so its $450. Im in California where its ka, so decision is a little tough. I previously had a escort 8500 original which was good for its time

Really depends on the area. I see mostly radar. Other people see mostly laser. Other places see about 50/50. You can always ask on the forums to get information from other drivers who also live/drive in your area. www.rdforum.org/index.php

First off, thanks for your outstanding tutorials and demo's. I just got a R3 to replace a Excort 9500ix. In a nut shell, I liked the GUI interface software when setting up the 9500, but it is what it is. I've had my 9500's for 10+ years (got 2) but with more and more cars with BSM, it runs me crazy in the city with it's alerts. They have saved me many times, city and hwy so i can't say I'm not going to miss their ability to detect. But I just got an R3 today, updated it to the latest database and it already came with the latest fw. I didn't find a seperate database update tool so I used the FW updater to do this. Seemed to work (didn't brick the unit). So, I have a LONG trip coming up through 4 states so we are going to put it to the test. Again, great video's and thanks for the time/effort you put into it. Oh and yes, I subscribed..

I just got my R3 a week ago as well. Totally impressed so far. I drove from south Mississippi on I-55 headed north today, 11/18/19, and had a 3+ mile detection of a Miss. Hwy Patrol vehicle just south of Jackson, MS. I was stunned. There were numerous hills between the first alert and finally getting to the officer. I had a more realistic detection on the return trip which was approximately three quarters of a mile and he came in to view hidden in the median with about an eighth of a mile to go. He was aimed towards me but had a huge patch of trees directly in front of him that apparently absorbed a fair amount of his signal. I was not speeding in either case but had ample time to avoid a ticket in both detections, the first one by a ridiculous amount if I had been. I'm sold on the R3. It has the latest firmware 1.50 and it will false on some BSMs but I'm OK with that because usually you can tell what caused it to false. Newer vehicles that you expect to have BSM and they are normally close, so far usually within 2 or 300 feet and almost always traveling along side in the same direction on a 4 lane until he gets out of range. I set mine up just as Vortex Radar recommended.
I just got a 60 on a 40 tonight and I was running waze but he was running radar and passed me driving. Now im definitely buying this.

Hi, I'm in greater Seattle like you, and I picked up an R3 thanks to your recommendations.
So far, I've only noticed the police using Ka and Laser. K band goes off constantly with default settings, but it's always been either speed monitoring signs or falses. I was just about to disable K band entirely until I read your recommendation to keep it on but at reduced sensitivity.
If K band is used around here for speed monitoring, which jurisdictions are doing it? I see oodles of marked cars running Ka, and I also got lased by the State Patrol just north of the Tacoma Dome. I was driving a legal speed so all was well. I've yet to see K band being utilized by an actual cop.

After watching all your videos I bought the uniden 3. Haven't regretted it at all. The thing has saved me thousands in tickets and bond money. I use it on my zx14 and in my other vehicles. It goes off far in advance giving you plenty of time to slow down. Even on the zx going over 130. It also has alerted me when a cop was trying to creep up from behind. I always used the passports but I do think this one is just as good or better. I'm hard wiring mine today because the cig lighter cord is always a real bitch. I'm putting a plug I can use on all my vehicles . Looks like I need a 2 amp fuse correct?..btw is there any accessories I can buy that would be a light or something like that or something I can put inside my helmet so I don't have to keep looking down at it?
If you live in New Jersey I suggest turning on MRCD, got pulled by a state trooper today running it while I had it turned off thinking it wasn’t in use.
That would be the first report of MRCD being used in NJ. There’s also many other more likely reasons why your detector didn’t alert. Would you mind posting the info on the forums so we could all learn more and help you troubleshoot?
So I had a fairly unique question, I live down south and down here it gets extremely hot in the car during the summer. It’s killed the display on some of my cheaper radars in the past and killed several dash cams completely. So I was wondering if you happen to know the temperature rating on the R3 or not, I’d rather not have to bring it in and out of the car or just get something that holds up to heat better

Thanks for another informative video. The R3 has been awesome. I should have bought one years ago. Luckily i haven't had a ticket in 10+ years and now i always have the R3 running. I just finished installing a Blendmount and a Mirror tap, all is good.
Right now I use highway mode with max sensitive everywhere when I'm traveling somewhere that I've never been because I don't know what to expect. I use city mode during low speed areas with a bunch of lights and stores. I don't get crazy falses but I really like the ka priority. In Maryland I am liable to go to NY so I leave it on wide. I've tested it in police central aka VA. When I'm in DC and around the the more heavily populated part of Maryland. The radar goes crazy. So many speed cameras and speed traps. On every street and block. There has to be a speed setting to turn off some of the alerts at lower speeds. Lol quiet ride I forgot.

You'll need KA wide in Florida. The county Sheriffs run stalker guns all the time. I got busted speeding with one going the opposite direction while the piggie was moving. Wish I had a radar then!

Master Yoda, yes Florida is a sneaky State. I almost got nabbed heading into downtown Orlando, lucky my ESP was strong that day. 35 mph zone, doing 40, someone passed me doing 55 mph.
On my way to an interview, unsure of where to go/parking situation. I was tempted to follow the native. Luckily, after hitting 45 mph, I started to slow down... Bam my Escort Passport 850 x50 went crazy.
A police officer walked out into the middle of the road and popped the radar on. Of course that guy was waived into a parking lot with 5 or 6 other victims getting tickets by other officers. I was luck, and was just able to get close enough to 35 mph, that they let me go by.
Also, heading north on route 417, Lake Jessup area by the toll plaza. Motorcycle police mostly with Laser or Ka radar guns. Very hard to see until you are within range.
Overall, Florida wsd not as bad as New Jersey. Luckily my 8500 x50 is still performing well, and I mostly take the same routes in New Jersey. My radar is dash mounted with velcro (kind with easy release tabs). Poor man solution (I had a few extra and allows me option to remove if needed). Note: never take any radar warnings for granted.

I have this r3 and I love it. The display is beautiful and the radar detector is Very accurate and hands-down the best radar detector on the market for the money I have mine melted with a bracket right underneath my mirror and it worked perfect I have mine set up with the speed and compass in the scan display and I happen to get a lot of compliments on this radar detector I have it in a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E 63S

just ran into an issue today. While running down the highway, going past a GPS lockout with my R3 I noticed that the amber light on my remote hardwire was flashing madly waaaaaay after it should have been. Behold! There was RCMP in the center median using RFR... Never got a bogey alert or so much as a peep from the audible alert. I guess if the k band Radar gun was being picked up at the same frequency as my GPS lockout (or at least that's my theroy) then this would be classified as "normal"???? Any info on this dangerous situation would be greatly appreciated. I'm going out first thing in the morning to delete my GPS lockout there regardless that's for sure.
I just got my Uniden R3 and set them to your recommended settings. The detector is very quiet except when it finds some real threats. Thanks a lot for that. I need to explore better mounting options. I am a little unsatisfied with both of these mounting cups... Both make the detector shake at speed and a lot on bumps. The other question I have is what cable do I need to hard wire into my fuse box?

I've been researching radar detectors for several days. Based on your videos and website, I agree the R3 is one of the best, if not the best RD for the money. But I have one question. If I have a newer Honda or Acura with BSM, lane assist, collision, etc., is the R3 still a good choice, if I can use it at all?
I'm honestly not sure if it'll be an issue. Hopefully not. I don't know too many people that drive those vehicles. You can always order one, try it out, and return it if it doesn't work. Stinger is the only company I know of that offers a radar detector with a feature specifically designed to filter out radar coming from your own vehicle. I'd be curious to hear your experience after you purchase and whether or not your vehicle causes the detector to false.

My Toyota Sienna has those sensors in the side mirrors when cars are next to you and behind you backing up and my 9500ix does not beep. And that's an old detector. Is that BSM?
Blindspot monitoring systems are BSM's, yeah. Different than parking sensors. Either way, Toyota's systems don't trigger RD's the way Honda's do.

I would think if you're in City you leave it on City if you're on Highway you leave it on Highway. The advanced mode is if you want to make technical changes primarily to it's sensitivity. I wouldn't leave it on advanced unless your extremely knowledgeable with the product.

Does the R3 allow you to get alerts on your phone? I live in VA where radar detectors are illegal so it is important that the detector is never readily visible. Sometimes this means it's not even visible to me, the driver. One reason I liked the V1 is because it has the option of a concealed display. The downside is that it's detectable.

Hey Vortex, I live in Eastern Washington and I'm thinking about getting the R3. I've seen online that in Pierce County (west side) uses Stalker. Would I be okay with turning on KA narrow if I pretty much stay only in the east side? I do drive on the highway frequently so I'm just afraid that a trooper from the west side comes to the east with a Stalker ATR. Do you know if the WA troopers use them or is it only the county sheriffs/local LEOs that use them?

Good information on the R3. However, is there an updated article on the website since June 2017? The firmware has been updated in 2018 with the same info as of Jan. 2020.
I keep the article updated every time a new firmware update comes out.
I like the ranges and its undetectable... leaning more towards the r3 although Fry's electronic this week has the max360 $200 off so its $450. Im in California where its ka, so decision is a little tough. I previously had a escort 8500 original which was good for its time
Looking to get the R3 radar detector. I'm curious how common radar vs. laser use is for police though? I haven't been able to find anything online about if police are using laser more to get around radar detectors. Do you have a video about this. By the way great vids and info!
Really depends on the area. I see mostly radar. Other people see mostly laser. Other places see about 50/50. You can always ask on the forums to get information from other drivers who also live/drive in your area. www.rdforum.org/index.php

I just got a ticket today with my Uniden R3. I had it set on advanced mode. The cop was using a laser but it didn't detect it until it was too late.

Ok. So got my R3 today and set it up. Was still picking up a lot of k band signals driving on the freeway more then I was expecting from he R3. Have K filter on, and I love in the central coast of California
