  • Coming up this 70s rock band ruled radio on their first release… Green Eyed Lady by the band Sugarloaf flew out of the gates as an irresistible ditty fronted by a sensational bass line and mysterious lyrics about a beautiful lady that took the band to the top of the charts quickly. But then the band fell apart. Then they lost their record deal.. Not once but TWICE! Desperate to overcome being labeled a one hit wonder the band reformed and recorded at a friend’s studio. They did a song about the real struggle of trying to get the record label to notice them and the cut throat experience they battled through to get That first and only hit. It worked! The song Don’t Call us We’ll Call you gave them another hit but would they be able to turn that momentum into long term success or fade away again. an original surviving band member, Guitarist Bob Webber tells us both the story of these 2 hits. Singer Jerry Corbetta passed away several years back leaving Bob to tell us the history.

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs. On today’s episode we talk to a surviving member of the 70s band Sugarloaf who’s Green Eyed Lady has become a 70s classic. the band Sugarloaf started the 70s off with a bang as their debut single became an overnight smash. Green Eyed lady written by singer Jerry Corbetta and 2 others was an instant crowd pleaser with it’s ear catching baseline and the laid back cool swagger of Corbetta’s voice the song was actually inspired by Corbetta’s girlfriend at the time. It hit #1 on the Rpm charts and #3 on the billboard hot 100. Sugarloaf was actually not the original name of this band. Singer Jerry Corbetta and today’s interview guitarist Bob webber had played together in a band called the moonrakers then they formed the band Chocolate Hair this was the group that recorded Green Eyed Lady but then just before they released it, the record label talked them into changing their name to Sugarloaf which was the name of a mountain in Colorado.
After the record went to #1 in different part of the US the band went through some changes and released their second album Spaceship earth and it sputtered.. The two single from the album tounge in cheek and mother natures wine missed the top 40/ During this time the band toured with the likes of Deep Purple, Eric Burdon and War, The who and others but the band everyone left the group with singer jerry Corbetta left under the band name but basically the band was broken up. . Then to make matters worse their label dropped them until Corbetta signed Neil Bogarts Brut Records.
The band actually came back together to record a third album that didn’t do much and then Brut Records folded leaving them in jeopardy once again. So they went into a friend studio in Denver and recorded a new song.

When we wrote and recorded these songs we never imagined that they would still be relevant these many years later.

Green Eyed Lady is one of those songs that has to be identified as a classic. Young or old there is something about it that still demands that you listen to it. It's not blues, it's not jazz, it's not rock, it's not pop. But it always gets your attention and holds it. It is timeless.

  • @4Mr.Crowley2

Professor can you **PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE** do “Never been any reason” by Head East? That song is such a masterpiece of 1970s classic rock with an unusual (for a mid 70s radio hit) awesome synth solo. They also did a great version of “Since you’ve been Gone” (arguably better than the Rainbow version - sacrilege I know!). Head East does not get the attention they deserve, so I’d love to see you give that banger some love as your videos are superb. “Never been any Reason” is an absolute banger (and the lyrics are something else - “save my life I’m going down for the last time/woman with the sweet lovin’ better than a white line”). I still remember young kids thinking the lyrics were “better than a white lie” - oh, the naïveté…

Listening to Bob Webber talk I get the sense that the band was a loose fit band living in different places and shifting members and makes we wonder if they had a stable formation of members that played together over a long period if they couldn't have had a string of hits because they has an original sound and creative music just needed to get together and bounce ideas. In the band were also Mike Pinera from Iron Butterfly, Peter Rivera with Rare Earth, Dennis Noda with a name like “Cannibal and the Headhunters”.
Special guest was Mark Farner if GFRR.
It was one of the best shows I have ever attended. July 4 on a perfect evening.
Jerry Corbetta was a wizard on the keyboards. And his vocal range was unreal. (He played with Frankie Valli as well, complete with the falsetto harmony.
He was very entertaining and just a great emcee and story teller that night.
It was lightning in a bottle that is vividly in my memory some 25 or so years later.

Their second album "Spaceship Earth" is my favorite album of the 70s.
Like many acts of the time, they fell victim to the snootiness of early FM Rock radio, who refused to play what they considered top 40 acts.
The Guess Who and Badfinger had a similar fate.
By the time of their comeback, they fell into a situation common for the time, when the public loves the song but no longer cares about the artist.

Prof. Adam. How ironic you profile this group, as a channel dedicated to the stories of Casey Kassem. I remember listening to the AT40 and hearing the backstory of Don't Call Us as a young teen his show was a weekly for me. In fact in the early 80s it was America's Top 10 it ran in SoCal on Saturday morning. It was the first show I ever recorded on a contraption called a VCR! October 1, 83.

I remember "Green-Eyed Lady" from when I was young. I had just gotten a cassette player/recorder for Christmas and I recorded Casey Kasem's Top Hits of 1970 (American Top 40) and this song was one of the songs. Later, either when I was in 8th grade or maybe a freshman in high school, I remember "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You." I remember it as being a song you could get a good chuckle out of, but had the cool riffs, too. It was a time when bands were willing to take a few shots at the industry (Pink Floyd's "Have a Cigar" for instance). Of course, I didn't know much about the band, just that they had these two great songs. Thanks for giving us the chance to hear the story of these two songs and of Sugarloaf.

Being into the heavy side of rock, "green-eyed lady" was something I was inclined to dismiss, yet could not prevent myself from enjoying the hell out of every time it played on the radio, which was often. It might be fair to say that all honest people who have heard it enjoyed the hell out of Green-Eyed Lady. And though different, "don't call us we'll call you" maintained a significantly similar vibe with the vocals, and there's a reason it spent longer on the charts than Green-Eyed Lady; you might not presume so, but it's probably just as good and just as loved by all who hear either again.

Do you call it a "reference" or a "send-up" or a "tribute" when a line from another artist is incorporated into a song? I love the send up to the Beatles in "Don't Call Us". Another great one is David Bowie's "Young Americans" (I read the news today oh, boy). I'm going to have to make a list of songs with send-ups.
The touch tones in "Don't Call Us" were a nice touch that I don't know if that was ever done before - it added atmosphere to the song - and awesome they used real phone numbers. I bet that inspired ELO for Telephone Line.
