  • I've been working hard on improving various aspects of my game, and especially working on short patters, which this was. There is still a lot of room to improve, but the hard work has paid off. In just my 2nd season giving regionals a go, I cash in the first event of the calendar year. First you learn to bowl in these tournaments (last year), then you learn to cash (this year), then you learn to make stepladders (next), and then you learn to win (upcoming).

I proud of you brother. You battled back & that’s not easy to do when you get in your head & start beating yourself up. You kept going & that is what it takes to make it. Way to go, brother!

Thank you. Next regional is 2 months away, so Troy and I are planning to get together and shoot some more fun videos so we have content to post in between.

I use very similar angles in my game, and I found it interesting you used Black Hammer Urethane and the NU blue. My rev rate isn't very good, so I am not comfortable throwing that type of ball. I would like to try and practice with it. Can you share what other bowling balls you used other than the NU Blue and Black Hammer Urethane?
Looked to me after the lanes transitioned, the ball on the left lane would stay online but not the right lane. If you missed a board left, it would hook very early. I can understand why you felt like a roller coaster.

Absolutely. You are right, missing left wasn't good, and it typically isn't on sport shots, especially in a PBA regional where many guys throw urethane and push the oil down outside, but inside is where the hook is. We jokingly say the PBA shots are all "Don't miss left" shots. It does allow you to get deeper and play that part of the lane, but you have to be UBER accurate. Last year before I had the NU Blue and Black Urethane, on short patterns I used a Motiv Jackal Rising, sanded to 1000, but with a weak layout. It gave me a urethane like movement but more pop than a urethane that I needed. The NU Blue is drilled stronger and is honestly similar to that. About game 3 or 4, I felt I needed to move left, and I tried the Rising as well as a Jackal Ghost sanded to 500. The Ghost is the most versatile ball I have ever owned, and I typically like not quite that sanded, and I found that it just lost energy on that line. I think this is why I struggled those games. Game 5, I moved into the Black Widow 3.0 which is an AWESOME and very versatile ball. I moved back right a little and threw it a little harder to get it down the lane. If I missed left, as you noted, it would over hook, but when I got it on line, I LOVED it. This is the ball I SHOULD have gone to in game 3. Once it started to hook too much in game 7, I started to move a little left, but was afraid I'd have the same issue I had in games 2-4, so in the 10th, I changed again to a hybrid with surface (in my case it was the Mythic Jackal), and threw that game 8. With surface on it, it's a bit weaker and doesn't over react, so it's a good one for me to go to late in blocks on short patterns if I don't want to move left. I COULD have moved left with something a little shinier and probably been okay those last 2 games, but since I was back in the hunt, I was too scared to make that jump, and I felt more confident I could maintain with the Mythic.
I used to throw Motiv, and that's why I have so many of those. I am moving into Brands of Brunswick and have those 3 hammers so far, and a 4th on the way. What I can tell you from the point of a lower rev rate guy, is that the Jackal Ghost is extremely versatile on Motiv Line, and the Black Widow 3.0 seems to be in a similar boat. It's a little rounder than the Ghost for me, but I've thrown the 3.0 on all types of patterns, and it seems to work on all of them. The Blue works for many guys on house, and it's okay for me, but I like other stuff better on house. But when I need control, especially on short patterns, I LOVE it. With it not being urethane, it gives me more hook that I need, but it doesn't seem to over react. When high rev guys are in urethane, the blue is great for me. The BLACK however, is a true urethane, and it really only comes into play for me on short patterns, especially if the gutter is in play. On this pattern, I could play it straight up about 6, almost pointing it, and it worked well. However, too far right was out of bounds on this pattern, so that is why I opted for the Blue instead. I've bowled on other patterns where the extreme outside hooks and that's the spot to play, and that is when I see the Black being the option. On those patterns, my reactive stuff was too much, and playing up 6-8 I had to be too accurate, where I could have had urethane up 4-5 and probably been better off. We will see when I hit those patterns again.
      I hope all this helps.

@@baldbrothersbowling Wow. Thank you for that valuable info! I started bowling again this year after a 13 year hiatus, and I'm blown away by the amount of bowling ball brands and new releases there are today.
I appreciate the info you shared about the Motiv bowling balls, and I will check out some reviews on the Jackal Ghost and Mythic Jackal. I also appreciate when you shared about your mental struggles in the 8 game block and and making a plan on how to achieve better scores.
Great video and thank you taking time to write up a detailed reply. Best of luck in future regional events.

Great bowling. I started back last year after more than 20 years. Going to a PBA regional qualifier next weekend to try and bowl my way in. I throw one hand thumb out so I have to have urethane and plastic on short patterns. Getting an IQ-78 drilled tomorrow.
