  • Ep 28 is about Kpop (and the Fence Lady drama tbh) - especially since Susie has never really listened to Kpop. But first Susie talks about her hectic week including spilling carrot juice and getting overwhelmed to feeling the whole day is ruined... then Ed realizes that potentially on the same day he accidentally poured jja jang myun noodles down the drain. Susie was sick. Ed and Susie are similar but different. Susie's siter doesn't listen to the podcast so she doesn't intrude on Susie's privacy. Ed had his mother's birthday dinner and has been cooking for his mom including making kimchi together. Susie and Ed catch up on the Fence Lady drama in Toronto, Canada. Susie and Ed then watch the music videos of Twice - I Can't Stop Me; ITZY - Not Shy; FiftyFifty - Cupid; NewJeans - Super Shy; BlackPink - How You Like That.

I feel like you would Like Mamamoo... I mean, anyone with ears would likes Mamamoo. And who doesn't love an underdog! You'll love the messages in their songs. There are songs where when they were criticized, they put it in a song. Hwasa was heavily scrutinized for her airport fashion once and this what they wrote in their song HIP:
"Beep, beep, People keep talking my fashion (Oh)
I don't care, it's just an action (Yeah)
Keep on click me click me as if you"re possessed zoom
Close up, close up, close up
Greasy hair If I do it, it's hip
      Stained shirt panty sticking out
      Greasy hair I don't care"
What Hwasa told her audience once after a show or meet-n-greet when she was told that she wouldn't make it bc she didn't fit the k-beauty standard after she was rejected from her first audition. She went home, cried, and then told herself: "If I don't fit today's beauty standards, I'll become a new, different standard" and became Hwasa.

I really need to see Soogia react to Maison by Dreamcatcher. Compared to other girl groups they have a darker, more rock leaning sound and they tend to sing about societal problems rather than just about relationships. Maison is the first title track in their Apocalypse trilogy that talks about global warming and the consequences if we don't take action. By this description it's easy to see why they aren't as popular as the groups you watched today, but they have quite the growing global audience! ^_^

There is never ending argument about what is K in K-Pop? Blackpink producer Teddy said it's just "Korean Pop" music, however, we don't call it American Pop or just Pop music when a K-Pop group sings a song in full English. So there is certainly a race, nationality, and culture that are keeping them becoming worldwide Pop groups. If any groups can sing in Korean to make K-Pop song, we shouldn't discriminate Korean groups as K-Pop even though they singing in full English.

YG itself was built upon the inspiration of Hip-hop music in general. As for the "Black music" thing... I have to disagree.. I don't know about other companies but YG and its artists has this Swag which differentiate them from other artists. And they never stated nor claimed to originally create any Genre. They themselves said that their inspiration was from hip-hop and as for 2NE1 & BLACKPINK .. Their musics are mostly a mixture of Hip hop and South Asian musics

YG was founded by one of the members of seo taji and the boys... but it's not about claiming to create the genre... it's about the fact that not all things are equal... some music is culturally tied... which means that you are benefitting from said culture... and it's just basic respect to not use the culture by just acknowledging it and also being there when the people of that culture need support. I don't know too too much about everything each group/artist does... but some do seem respectful like i know BP paid homage to some of hip hops greats in some of their lyrics... but as a whole... there def is a lot of work to be done in the industry toward progress

1:02:10 well, the group you've started the point of 'paying homage & acknowledge the legends" on i.e Blackpink (and for thet matter YG as whole company) have never ever ever hidden their love and admiration towards black artist not once but numerous times. Latest example being the BP group members fangirling over Beyonce while attending her concert, earlier this year all 4 members said thet during their training they all were fully in love and got a lot of inspiration from groups like TLC & Spice Girls in "Carpool with james Corden", Jennie is a fan of weekend (and vise versa) and she said it multiple times when working with him in "The Idol". Even in the show "Blackpink house" they mentioned how they love Ariana Grande and spice girls. They had cover of Miguel (sure thing) and had collaborators with cardi B, lady gaga becouse of their love to them... They are best friends with Selena Gomez and the list can go on and on and on... Another Huge group from YG, BIGBANG never hid their inspiration was actually a a 'black' artist when GD was ruling k-pop he said it many times that his inspiration to music was certain black musician named "Pharrell Williams", Taeyang always said how he love MJ, Asher... So YG as whole Never ever ever said that "They created certain type of music" and actually always acknowledging the artist from whom they get inspiration from, So (even if blantly) saying that they "Stole" the music from certain culture when you yourself do not know or aren't sure of if they had paid homage or acknowledged the artists in past or not is such a foolish and irresponsible statement to make in my opinion.

The CEO who started the company Yang Hyun-suk, was originally in a famous k-group (Seo Taiji and Boys) who brought the sound of K-HipHop. They pioneering the use of rap in Korean popular music despite pressure from ethics and censorship committees on their music. The guys that makes most of YG's banger beat for BlackPink is Teddy Park who was the leader of 1TYM (pronounced: one time) and the label he started is "The BlackLabel" grew up in NY/Cali. BLACKPINK with 91 million subscribers on TH-cam is officially the artist or singer with the most subscribers in the world.
He is also the #1 most streamed artist in the entire history of TH-cam with over 32 billion views on his channel.

Having only 38 songs total, considering they have only marginal involvement in the writing and production of their music, over a 7 year career, is not meritorious. That’s less than 6 tracks a year. Consider that The Beatles, who wrote their own songs, as well as songs for many other acts, played their own instruments, created their own record company, toured the world multiple times, appeared in two movies, produced 14 full length albums, had 30 number 1 hits, recorded over 200 songs, and sold more records than any other act in music history, and remains a big product 50 years after they broke up, did all that in only 8 years.
Getting views on YT or streams on Spotify is possibly the laziest measure of success. Virality has almost nothing to do with talent or hard work. Selling physical media is a better measure of true popularity since the fan has to actually give up their hard earned money than just clicking on a mouse. In terms of selling physical media, Twice leaves BP in the dust. And of course, their touring schedule and music output over almost the same span of time should put BP to shame.

I feel like from all the companies in kpop YG does the best job at paying homage to hip hop and rnb legends and clearly addressing hip hop as a black genre influential to their music (I say that even tho I really dislike a lot of YG's politics and their artist management), but I do agree that in general that should be a much bigger discussion in kpop.
It's very clear to me not all groups should have the need to fill a "rapper" position and it's kinda absurd that some of these kids sometimes are put in this situation against their wishes, and most of them have literally no knowledge about hip hop, its history and political relevance. First point, on the fence lady, that if the fence is built on your property technically it's your fence. So if she want to tear it down then no one can do anything as it's on her property. If they didn't want it messed with then the need to have to pay to move it over or it'll will be taken down by the PROPERTY OWNER -which is not the ppl complaining.
Second point, I don't agree with ppl's claims of "appropriations" nor accusations of "taking" from black culture bc it's all influence. The braids or long braids for example, a lot or ppl call that "appropriation" or what not, but a certain group of ppl don't own the style of braided hair. Look farther back and you would see that indigenous Asians braided their hair, along with celtics, nordic vikings and so on. Technically, what we know now, or have ppl claim as "black culture" is borrowed *influence* of other cultures. So in short, I think it's all BS political talk that shouldn't be pulled into music. It's dumb bc culture and fashion has always been about influence and the reinterpretation of things that speak to the soul which is what makes art. Also, it's mostly haters that brings in the notion of "appropriation" bc not a single one of those ppl are blowing up Eminem's spot for the same argument of "cultural appropriation" nor does any one dare to say anything about tupac (which one of my all time fav artist) appropriating "culture" when he was *influenced* by literature. So to me, it should be a free-for-all influence as it propels the art of Music/Fashion culture forward and the only time ppl should speak up is when it's used incorrectly or in a racially discriminatory manner, like a black or yellow face or if in a negative light like for propaganda with a hidden agenda -like what the Nazi swastika did to the original symbol of Buddhism left-facing sauwastika. (And if you are unaware, the Nazi swastika basically took the Buddhism left-facing sauwastika -which stood for auspiciousness, took it and flipped it backwards and made it their symbol to be what ppl know it to be now, a symbol of hate. The Nazi is the biggest appropriator there is but no one wants to talk about that. Instead they want to be petty like you took this and that from MY culture when they have no idea where it came from in the first place.)
And I'll throw down another history lesson for the kids. "Hip-Hop culture" isn't just music. Technically hip-hop culture includes 3 factors: Mc-ing, DJ-ing, and breaking (bboy/bgirl). That's hip-hop, hiphop culture. I won't go into the details here, bc it's too long, but that is what started hip-hop as a culture. And breaking was invented by a bunch of puerto ricans and has it's root in latin dance. Long story short, the base of all bboy steps were based, born out of salsa. The top-rock is essentially modified steps of the salsa dance -which is "borrowed" from the latin community -influenced. So these cries of "appropriation" is stoopid to me. Those who are in an uproar about that are ppl who are preventing a CULTURE from evolving. And technically, everyone is influenced by "western anglo" culture as the modern clothing that we ALL wear are European in nature. What none Anglo-European culture wears pants and/or a bras back in the day? But everyone in a developed area basically do now. Appropriations or Influence? Groups like BlackPink are merely an evolution of music and ppl hating bc they have popularity while weak ppl want to take away from their success of contributing to the evolution on a craft they worked hard on. To me, there is no different from ppl crying cultural appropriation, now, and the 1950's when white ppl said that black ppl couldn't sing the song that white ppl were making in that era. It's just one of these 🤨moments. But bc they did, when got groups like The Temptations and The Supremes which lead to R&B/ Soul, Which lead to the Beatles to Rock to Grunge to Punk and "POP"ular music is a mix of all. It's a evolution brought on by influence.

It's just when getting introduced to a group of people - irl or Kpop - they all blend unless there's major differences (like when I first saw Twice I immediately could differentiate Dahyun, the rest took a few interviews though. Especially because they're always wearing very similar outfits in MVs and could have any hair color/style)

Part of the strategy is to purposefully make them blend in so it sells the image of a group. Many groups are oftentimes pretty similar in body shape, height, etc... for the sole purpose so that from a distance they're obviously a group... who yes all have different styles and looks when you get to know them... but as a newbie it's strategically done to make them undeniably a group.

I thought it was an interesting/humorous comment that all the members of Twice look similar. That way of viewing a group of people has always been a criticism about how white people view other races (the old “they all look alike” cliche). However, you two being Asian, a better reassessment of the criticism is that it is an American prejudice rather than a racial one. I’m not Asian, but have lived in Korea for 8 years, and have become a bit of a K-Pop fan. But after living here only a short time, I had no problems clearly distinguishing different members of various K-Pop groups even after a few minutes of the first viewing of a video.
Actually, if you watch old news footage of Americans’ reaction to British groups like the Beatles, or The Rolling Stones, the media had the same initial comments that they all looked alike. People are funny.

But it is very necessary that our cultures are respected, especially when they don't know what it feels like to be black and brown in America. Not saying you can´t give credit to the people that inspired you. i am not from Amarica and were i am from, this is not used, so maybe i am wrong about cultral appropiation, but when i have seen it used, often as a wepon, like white people can´t use braids, even tho many cultures have braids, also whites. I am so sorry but… Your POV is perhaps just a few decades behind…
    A culture’s dominant influence towards a genre doesn’t mean that others can’t use it…
I understand if others mockingly utilise the genre or blatantly ignore the contribution the dom culture has towards the genre, but cultures diverge and disperse *naturally*
If you’ve ever studied anthropology or cultural/social studies you’ll know, that most cultures actually appreciate when their influences are being picked up by others - cuz it’s a signal that they’re doing something good/right
Acknowledgement is ofc not enough to excuse the decades or even centuries of the Black communities being “taken advantage” or stolen from, but the only way to progress is actually to be open, not be intimidated to respect, use, pay homage and just all round inclusive of other cultures to create a ‘newer wave’ of modern musical landscape where everyone can enjoy everything from everyone’s background

where did either of us say a culture can't use hip hop? we said they should acknowledge the origins... and what you're saying is centuries behind esp since cultural appropriation wasn't even a concept decades ago. And no most cultures don't appreciate having their stuff used for other's gain esp in instances where colonialism and slavery is a part of their history. In addition, even on Tik Tok, it's a big deal that you give CREDIT when you use someone else's dance or content/video idea. Why? Bc NOBODY prefers someone use their work or copy them WITHOUT credit. What you said literally doesn't apply almost ever. Everyone appreciates credit and everyone esp appreciates the people who copied and were inspired by their work to have those people come to back you up when you need it. That's the right thing to do. Literally every artwork works like this - you talk about who created certain styles and genres and why they came up with said styles... bc again credit is incredibly important.
