Jhad Nafs is Fard Al Ayn & so is seeking knowledge for what is fard. example a husband may need to learn halal trade fiqh as a bachelor and not period fiqh where as a wife it's the opposite. Learning Aqidah is done without taqlid, see tafsir Quran 47.19 & 65.12 ibn Kathir and sadi, & this is the starting point worshiping Allah alone as He taught and interacting others as He taught. the initial Jhad builds up society like keeping families together like a man seeking ilm to be a halal provider or a bint keeping chaste and not single moms homeIess and it tied to the physical one nor does it stop... see Quran 9 :122.
