Rainy lake in the NE corner of lower Mi drains from time to time... that same area had a major cholera outbreak because of human toilet issues putting their outhouses over sinkholes and the neighbors downstream using the tainted ground water

Very interesting to learn about our state. Thank you for sharing!

I live on Pewabic hill in Iron Mountain, and quite a few neighbors get small holes, but some are up to 5 feet across and 5 feet deep. What is going on with that?

Fishing the E branch of the Fox River, my friend I fished downstream from 77 and we came upon a beaver dam. We went around the dam only to find a large sand flat and only a trickle of water , I often wonder if there was some type of karst topography that happened to coincide with the dam...We then went past the sand flat and the river started up again.

Great video and explanation. With some types of non human induced sinkhole regions, do sinkholes like these tend to trend along a fault line system? I've read about this but haven't seen much on this possible connection. Thanks.

Sinkholes can form along fault lines, but are not recorded or studied often so there's not much research currently out there. Most sinkholes are going to form in areas where groundwater causes dissolution of limestones or any carbonate rocks leading to ground deformation

My back yard in East grayling sprouted a big one, 15-foot round and deeper than 30 feet.
filled it in with steel debrie and a variety of plastic items, then capped it off with 2 feet of topsoil.
    that sucked... but it works.

      Plastic what now? Why?

What about the proposed reconstruction of the underwater tunnels in the straits?

Thanks for explaining how unstable buried debris can cause subsidence. A neighbor’s builder tried to bury their debris in our yard before we started building. My mom had to get the city to threaten to revoke his license before he removed it. So yah, some definitely dump stuff where they shouldn’t if they think they can get away with it.

The music is super annoying and not adding ANYTHING TO THE VIDEO. It is making it hard to hear Ty Black's explanations *because it is so annoying.*

Would pumping millions of gallons of water contribute to sink holes.

It is possible, but that is very dependent on the geology of the area and how quickly the water is removed. Overpumping from aquifers in areas that have large karst systems is more likely to lead to the formation of sinkholes. Subsidence will typically occur before a sinkhole will form, so there are signs beforehand.

Kill the music, the background music is totally unnecessary and actually makes it difficult to hear the speaker

Get rid of the music as it is distracting and makes you appear as juveniles!
