If you're planning on doing more Hotline Miami stuff, I'd be interested in seeing your opinions on Run by iamthekidyouknowwhatimean, which was featured in Hotline 2's OST. It's a very unique track, and one of most memorable ones for me, personally.

Did you know that M.O.O.N was 15 when he recorded his music for HM? Also would love to hear Quixotic still by Moon,Divide by magna and Decade Dance by Jasper Byrne (for that evil feeling)

I feel like Perturbator and Carpenter Brut really blew up after Hotline Miami. Maybe they had an audience before the game but I wasn't even aware of the whole synthwave style before it. Hydrogen is THE song of Hotline Miami. First mission (right?), you hear this banger song start and you are wondering how the game actually is and BAM, the first enemy kills you in one hit. You restart, learn where the enemies are positioned and get further and further in the map. You learn the basics of the game to this song, such an iconic memory to me.
In fact, it's from the fourth level, "Decadeance" . If you don't know how much I'm grateful to have known this game not only because of the game itself, which is a work of art in itself, but also because of all the topics to which I was introduced by the eighties aesthetic, synthwave music, pixel art and how to forget its cinematographic inspirations such as: "taxi Driver", "full metal jacket" and of course "Drive".
I was a fan of Perturbator before hearing him in the first Hotline Miami, but he really blew up after the second game. Which is why Future Club is his most played song on Apple Music. He's the goat imo.
The developers mentioned they simply made a game featuring the music they liked to listen to, and picked some of the most hypnotic tracks to create the atmosphere fitting the mix of psychedelic experiences and reality in Hotline Miami so well.
"Deep Cover" by Sun Araw is a song I would recommend from the FIRST Hotline Miami game. Not one of the more popular songs on the soundtrack, but it has such ambience to it that gets overlooked. The feeling it gives off when looking at the visuals from the actual game and one simple action: Waking up in your apartment.
the song itself puts off so much ambience that i like to see as jacket acknowledging what hes doing for example the lyrics "here i am" being him crying out for the authorities to stop him
It is an absolute banger of a tune - That and Carpenter Brutes - La perv are too good. Magna - Divide from the second game is also amazing, worth a listen!
It's funny how even after all this time, close to ten years after I played the games, I still instinctively tap my feet to M.O.O.N. and hear the gunshots, door slamming and death noises from the game. :D It really just puts you in that vibe.
Both Hotline's OSTs are legendary. I'd suggest checking out Bloodline, Le Perv, Musikk per Automatikk, In The Face of Evil, The Way Home, Fahkeet, Blizzard. There are honestly so many tracks that are totally worth listening
nice selections for the reation :D honorable mentions: "MOON - Dust" "Pertubator feat. Noir Deco - Technoir" "Magic sword - in the face of evil" , "the way home" "El Huervo - Rust" and ofc. the introtrack for HM2: "the green kingdom - Untitled", which kinda feels like a calm before s* hits the fan ;) hope after you got into burry the light, you might take a look into Metal Gear Risings soundtrack. the vocal tracks of the bossthemes all kinda tell their origin and are completely bangers (especially "red sun" and "The Only Thing I Know For Real")
I would also add "Coconuts - Silverlight", it's super moody and iconic in the game Would also love to see his reaction to metal gear rising especially "stains of time"
7:20 Not exactly. In an interview the two main developers stated that they had a bunch of random music installed on their computer, liked how they sounded and tried to make the vibes of the game fit the music. So sort of the inverse i guess
I will live and die by how good Daisuke from El Huervo is. My favorite track from the series. Fits perfectly with how it plays in the cutscenes after each brutal level where you just chill and talk to your friend Beard.
@@LionmightOfficialCould not believe how perfectly you were able to complement tracks that seemed already complete to me, especially the first one was just alien. I’m actually sad that you don’t have a video on Silent Hill yet, but I imagine you’re already extensively familiar with Akira Yomoaka’s work
80's vibe Pertubator was the best there was, his whole Sexualizer EP was peak, "Meet Jimmy" paints such a beautiful picture. Now his darker synth is not bad at all, but there's something about these hot Miami night songs that are just more earthly, closer in feeling than the fictitious "fighting fleshy robotic abominations in a cyberpunk dystopia" that excellent songs like "Death Squad", "Vers us" or "Excess (ft. Hotline Miami has one of the most fun and jarring music I've heard. Perfect for the game it's on. You can feel the short and very alike pieces linked toguether with a small variation repeating once and again without tiring or overwhelming you. I'm honestly curious about your opinion on another of my favorite OST from videogames with SuperGiant's Transistor.
Transistor was a game I had in library for a few years and a buddy kept trying to get me to play it. Now we've lost touch, but I finally did ply it and the soundtrack isn't memorable, not like hotline. But I do remember loving it when I was playing it.
I just love Hotline Miami. I really liked your cover of Daisuke. The violin, although it creates a slightly different atmosphere, still sounds cool. If you are going to make another video on the OST of this game, then I advise you to listen to “Roller Mobster - Carpenter Brut” and “Run - iamthekidyouknowwhatimean”. These are my favorite tracks. As well as the tracks “You are the blood - Castanets” and “Silver Lights - Coconuts”. I find them the most interesting in the game.
Perturbator is so damn good Deep Cover by Sun Arraw (or also called War Anus) and Silver Light by Coconut are trully experimental, never heard this kind of music in a game if isnt a experimental game like Postal 1 and Cry of Fear with that wierd sad/horror music like.
The breathing take on Hydrogen made me remember the firelink shrine theme of the first dark souls. The strings make a melody that resembles inhaling and exhaling too, kind of produces a sense of relief or peace. Although in this case it's more of a catharsis when exhaling.
Okay I was instantly addicted to the arpeggiator in Sexualizer! That whole song is a vibe!! Personally arpeggiators are my favorite things to play with on DAWs because you can easily lay down a foundation while also experimenting with the key and tune you want. Oooh simple rhythms that elicit any kind of dance are great in my book! I especially like the slow build ups because it gives you time to process the foundation while enjoying the new layers. It's so cool how just alternating staccato and legato can really make the music feel like a living entity instead of just background music! In general I don't actively seek out tracks like Daisuke El Huervo because they're better off as background music when I'm concentrated on something else. Still, I appreciate the structure and ambiance of the track!
Hydrogen is a clean and simple song, but it manages to drill itself into you while playing the game. I just remember grinding a level over and over with such tension while this song is playing. Your analysis of the the repeated tension/release fits so well with the gameplay loop. Very tense moments, as you mentally prepare and commit to attacking an enemy, followed by immediate relief for a while if you pull it off.

I was reading the comments and I thought I was going crazy, had to google it to be sure... HOW is no one talking about "She swallowed burning coals" ????? I know it's from the second game but damn, I thought someone would at least mention it. I hope you react to it some day
Oh man, I resonate so much with how you're reacting to these. Especially as Hydrogen built up over time. I remember playing Hotline Miami for the first time and I kept dying over and over because I was too focused on the music. Specifically the level that uses Hydrogen is also one of the earlier ones with a very dark context in terms of what's going down in the environment, and this was the perfect track to represent that level's sense of unease. This game and its sequel are definitely the best examples out there of how a creative game developer can use a soundtrack entirely composed of licensed music to great effect. My favorite track in Hotline Miami though is definitely Miami Disco by Perturbator, used in the level "Push It" which is set in a nightclub, and it fits PERFECTLY.
You should seriously check out Le Perv (Carpenter Brut), Fahkeet (Light Club), and Run (IAMTHEKIDYOUKNOWWHATIMEAN), they definitely stand out quite a bit in the games, a lot more memorable too.
Dude, Hotline Miami OST is a masterpiece, both games are amazing. My favorite from the first one is Miami Disco, and from the second one is Sexualizer, both are by Pertubartor, and they are amazing.
I don’t know how much time it’d take, but is there a chance for your covers to be released separately at the same time as the main video? They’re amazing and I wanna loop em haha Edit to clarify: just the ones like in this video where you add in your own flair to the tracks, even if they aren’t necessarily the whole track they’re incredibly well done and always a treat
I've got a few songs I'm still listening to since I first played both Hotline Miami 1 and 2 which I think are quite underrated. - M.O.O.N. - Dust (HM2) -El Huervo - Turf (HM) -Mega Drive - Slum Lord (HM2) -Jasper Byrne - Miami (HM) -Scattle - It's safe now (HM)
The synth in Moon Hydrogen reminds me of that when you put an old Nokia or Morotola phone near a radio while someone was calling in. This rhythmical noise would start before the phone would even ring. Mobile radio waves interfering with the FM frequency of the radio,
I know I'm like two weeks late to this video, but like man I really like what you have to say about some of my favorite tracks from one of my all time favorite games. The main two really points I really liked from you was how hydrogen is like a breath and your all breathing....and I think that is absolutely a brilliant take. Cuz my take on Hydrogen from actually playing the game is that its like a heartbeat where if you make one misstep its all over and spills disaster and death. So you got to keep the heart beat going longer. Now El Huervo is like my ALL time favorite song from Hotline Miami, just the absolute calm and peace it brings just listening to that song especially when its late a night and your on a drive. Its so relaxing and makes me feel like im floating in another existence and makes me feel this sense of tranquility, and your point on how its a similar vibe we can all come to listen to it as one and feel the same is great.
If you wanna do another video on Hotline Miami, I would recommend to look at either: El Huervo - Turf, Carpenter Brut - Roller Mobster, |M|O|O|N| - Dust, Pertubator - Future Club, Carpenter Brut - Le Perv or my personal favourite: Light Club - Fahkeet
This is the type of music I always wanted to get into, but I just dont even know where to start. Stuff like this makes my heart race and gets me moving, I absolutely love it with all my body, even if on the outside I'm just lightly bumping my head. Especially hydrogen, which has lived in my head rent-free for years and years. Even the slow ones, which make me want to drink coffee at a cafe on a rainy night while I do research for my book. I loved hearing you talk about them, and I loved your additions to them. I know you can't circulate them online for legal reasons, but whats up, I'll meet you out back of the supermarket and buy your mixtape straight out the trunk.
When i saw theM|O|O|N cover i was like "if its is Hydrogen, hes either going to really love it or really hate it" Also my first time experiencing the game was tripping off a tab of acid while laying on the bed with the LED going and by buddy was stuck on the Paris level for a while then at some point left while he was in the apartment so it was playing Deep Cover and I fell out of existence momentarily listening to that masterpiece
I really hope you explore more songs from this game, so many of them give that synth vibe in such a nice way, my personal recommendation for one to look at is Vengeance or Knock Knock
OMG!!! It's been so long with this game and I'm still in love since day 1, I love your reactions to the music, so nice to see someone analyze and describe how they perceive the music and even give us a bit of a stringed interpretation!! I thank you and the algorythm for suggesting this! If you do any more tracks I'd be thrilled to watch, almost all pieces from both games are top notch!
I would love for you to look at more Perturbator man! His stuff is so deep and takes so many twists and turns in terms of themes over the course of his albums. His more recent works "New Model" and "Lustful Sacraments" moves away from the synthwave theme and is a lot darker and moody. Guy is a genius with synths.
I think you'll really enjoy the band "Gunship." They are in this same music genre scene but they write more traditional song with lyrics and Verse/Chorus structures. Song suggestions: Tech Noir and/or Dark All Day. They make really awesome music videos too if you want to check those out.
1:54 it's funny you bring up that visualization, because the level Sexualizer is tied to is one in a night club. also, that level is really awesome because the beat drop at the intro of the song happens at the same moment that the character's car screeches in and you start going through the level.
"Crystals" by M.O.O.N is a great one. Gives me a sense of a liminal feeling. "Run" by IAMTHEKIDYOUKNOWWHATIMEAN is honestly the more twisted song I enjoy. Envokes a lot of fear, uncertainty and confusion.
Great reaction video! Will watch more.. I LOVE Synthwave / Darksynth but now I have to revisit Ed Alleyne Johnson 's Purple Electronic Violin Concerto 😁 You woke some 90s memories up 🙏

Love listening to your thoughts on the music, would LOVE to see you cover more of HM's soundtrack
I highly recommend the OST of both Bastion and Transistor. Love the soundtracks you pick!
Your violin really integrated with Sexualizer and I loved it. Where can I find a complete version?
They’re amazing and I wanna loop em haha
Edit to clarify: just the ones like in this video where you add in your own flair to the tracks, even if they aren’t necessarily the whole track they’re incredibly well done and always a treat
I usually make separate shorts of the ones I really like but that's far as it goes. It cannot be legally released on Spotify in this form for example.
@@LionmightOfficial ahh okay, that makes sense, thanks for responding!
Please do@@LionmightOfficial
I've got a few songs I'm still listening to since I first played both Hotline Miami 1 and 2 which I think are quite underrated.
- M.O.O.N. - Dust (HM2)
-El Huervo - Turf (HM)
-Mega Drive - Slum Lord (HM2)
-Jasper Byrne - Miami (HM)
-Scattle - It's safe now (HM)
The synth in Moon Hydrogen reminds me of that when you put an old Nokia or Morotola phone near a radio while someone was calling in. This rhythmical noise would start before the phone would even ring. Mobile radio waves interfering with the FM frequency of the radio,
Not only is the music solid vibes, but when you're focused on the game, this is amazing background music. Really nailed the 80's trance aesthetic
Love Daisuke, heck, I love El Huervo's stuff in general. I recommend Turf from the first Hotline Miami game, also by him, amazing song.
Oh man this is gonna be good. The first and second game have an amazing soundtrack.
Please tell me i can get hold of the full cover you did of Sexualizer, you killed it, added so much to what is already a Banger!!
I need a full version of that Hydrogen + Strings cover
When i saw theM|O|O|N cover i was like "if its is Hydrogen, hes either going to really love it or really hate it"
Also my first time experiencing the game was tripping off a tab of acid while laying on the bed with the LED going and by buddy was stuck on the Paris level for a while then at some point left while he was in the apartment so it was playing Deep Cover and I fell out of existence momentarily listening to that masterpiece
I really hope you explore more songs from this game, so many of them give that synth vibe in such a nice way, my personal recommendation for one to look at is Vengeance or Knock Knock
Cool reaction video, and great soundtrack. I love the Cindy and Fat Chocobo in the background btw, nice mascots. :)
Both Hotline Miami 1 & 2 have absolutely AMAZING soundtracks. Please please listen to more from these games.
The bass line in the MOON track was orbiting around. Definitely a track for headphones or full speaker setup to really hear that
The hotline miami music fits my mood when I just want to relax
I put this Soundtrack almost every day to clean my house ... is simply a masterpiece.
Ooh PLEASE!! i wuold love seeing you reacting to Payday 2 Soundtracks, they're bangers (Especially: Razormind, Odd to greed, and Mayhem in suit)
YO I NEED A REMIX WITH THAT VIOLIN MAN
OR WHATEVER AWESOME INSTRUMENT IS THAT IM IGNORANT
That first addition with the electronic fiddle going quick was cake.
I would love for you to look at more Perturbator man! His stuff is so deep and takes so many twists and turns in terms of themes over the course of his albums. His more recent works "New Model" and "Lustful Sacraments" moves away from the synthwave theme and is a lot darker and moody. Guy is a genius with synths.
quite certain hotline miami is a catalyst in the renaissance of the synthwave genre
I think you'll really enjoy the band "Gunship." They are in this same music genre scene but they write more traditional song with lyrics and Verse/Chorus structures. Song suggestions: Tech Noir and/or Dark All Day. They make really awesome music videos too if you want to check those out.
Gotta listen to Inner Animal by Scattle.
It's so dark it really does feel like it's coaxing out some inner animal
Sun Araw - Deep Cover and Sun Araw - Horse Steppin' classics
The way that you FEEL music is TIGHT!
God i love sounds of violin
Hydrogen is still the alarm tone on my phone, no way you can sleep through that one 😂
Justo he terminado esta obra maestra indie y me traes un análisis. Un servicio 10/10.
He’s actually sitting on your back RIGHT NOW watching what you do. Don’t look back at him or he’ll know you know.
@@Tweedle-Stupid OH NOOOOO
Oh my god damn the strings starting at 15:07. Elevate my soul why dont you good sir 😂Have a sub my dude. Good stuff!
1:54 it's funny you bring up that visualization, because the level Sexualizer is tied to is one in a night club. also, that level is really awesome because the beat drop at the intro of the song happens at the same moment that the character's car screeches in and you start going through the level.
I love how badass and hypnotic it is. Makes you choose violence.
My personal favorites are "Voyager" and "Miami" from Jasper Burne
Hotline Miami 1 and 2 OSTs completely changed my interest in music in general, since almost 10 years from now I'm still listening it nowadays.
I LOVE Synthwave / Darksynth but now I have to revisit Ed Alleyne Johnson 's Purple Electronic Violin Concerto 😁 You woke some 90s memories up 🙏
The metal cover of hydrogen is amazing!
Anyone think he lowkey looks like The Son when he's smiling? Or even just in general but especially when he's smiling. I could definitely see this guy in a stylish 80s - 90s crime action film like Johnny Mnemonic or something.
More like The Father than The Son, there is a resemblance though. Something something get a grip
That section with you playing sounded awesome uwu
From the first game's OST, I would recommend checking Silver Lights, by Coconuts.
