Did this mod to my 1510, I ended up placing an included washer on the inside of the assembly as this reduced the wobble in the wheel, and allowed for both bearings to sit flush with the plastic, I also ended up making the hole on the inner part of the assembly slightly larger so the head of the screw could be flush with the assembly, after doing some testing on several different surfaces, I'm impressed on how it turned out especially outside when going over gaps in tiles and pavement
Nice, glad it turned out well for you. I don't think I could go back to the stock wheels myself after switching to these.
I just did this mod to my 1510. I travel for work with common audio/staging gear. Nothing too sensitive like camera lenses or tube-electronics, so the stock Pelican wheels "roughness" wasn't an issue. After a few years though, the wheels definitely had flat spots and didn't roll nicely.
I ordered the exact wheels in this tutorial. The price was right and I trusted they fit, as shown in this video. They definitely roll better than my old "high-milage" wheels and the process wasn't too difficult.
A couple of issues I encountered:
-The hardware that comes with these wheels is NOT flush mount like the tapered Pelican pin that holds in the old wheels. On the inside edge of my case, this caused the wheel mount to not line up flat as the factory design. If you are handy with a drill, you need to bore out the inner pin hole ~3/8" to 1/2" to allow for the bolt head to sink into the wheel cover when you tighten it. Again, super easy if you have a steady hand.
-Even with lubricant, these wheels are pretty noisy. Not terrible, but definitely far from silent. I'm not a stickler for stuff like that, but if a silent roll is what you're going for, the wheels shown in the video are not for you. Remember, these wheels were 10 bucks, so this should not be a surprise. Just my forewarning.

I'm not sure if there is just more play in the spacing on my case, but if I had needed to mod anything or bore anything out to make the new hardware fit, I certainly would have talked about that in the video. Possibly a difference in the hardware that shipped with your set vs the ones I got ?
I've been using my case a bit, not heavily, but the streets & sidewalks here in DC are horrible and the set I have are near silent. I haven't lubricated or done anything since installing them, and they don't make noise at all when they roll. So again, maybe there is inconsistency in what you get when ordering from this listing... as you pointed out, it's not a huge surprise for under $10.

Despite them only being $10, if they are causing you issues then I'd file a return and get a different set on Amazon. While it's only $10, seems like you got the wrong set either by accident on their end when shipping or in ordering?

I had the same issue with the hardware that came with the wheels in the link above. I ended up countersinking the interior bolt head into the pelican case as you suggested and that solved the problem.

I made this modification because the original wheels are just way to loud. Definitely had heads turned in airports. I drilled new holes 8mm lower to give more floor clearance. Only downside of having a pelican is I got pulled over alot more by the TSA for "RANDOM" checks
Same. Pulled over at Heathrow a few years ago and in the end, the officers were interested in the cameras and lenses I used.
Just did this wheel upgrade on my 20plus year old 1510 pelican. Easy as and now like new. Cheers mate.

Worked but also didn't. I installed these on my 1510 with the provided link to get 68x18mm wheels, but the width 24mm with the bearings. Your wheels in the video did not have this extra width on the metal bearings, but I got them in with some hammering. HOWEVER, since the original axels don't fit in the new bearings, I'm using the included axel, which also works but doesn't... This is because the new axel on the inner side of the wheel in sticking out a few mm, which bumps into the wheel well of the 1510 when I try to screw the wheel housing back in. It does screw in, but the wheel housing is now at an angle and the wheel itself is really wedged in the housing, requiring a hammer to remove. Works well enough, I guess. We'll see how long it lasts...
I need to make this change. One of my Pelican wheels broke into crumbs a few days ago
Oh no, that's the worst when they start to crumble. Flat spots too, even small ones make a case so much louder and more difficult to roll. Good luck!

My issue is with bearing failure.
I'm on my second set of factory wheels in three years. And these bearings are on their last legs.

Did this about three years ago, the wheels were not of great enough diameter and the bottom of my case experienced significantly more damage from dragging on uneven ground, etc.
Thanks for the message Andrew! Did you use the same diameter as the ones you took off your case? The ones shown in this video sit taller than the original Pelican wheels (more ground clearance) since the originals are flat & the replacements are convex like a roller blade wheel.
@@DcSoundOp correct, although I do not believe the durometer of the wheels were as exact as they were supposed to be, they actually wore down like 4-5mm over 3yr/?50miles?

You mention he size of the wheels, 64 by 18......but what is the axil size???? 30 or 35mm ?
It is listed in the link provided to the wheels used in this video. They are a 6mm axle, though you could certainly go up to a larger 8mm acle like you'd find more commonly on a skateboard bearing. I don't know where you're getting 30 or 35mm for an axle, that would be HUGE comparatively.
Did you notice that the factory axel does not compress the bearing core... meaning that most of the rotation is axel to core, instead of inner core to outer core of the bearing. The factory bearings DO NOTHING. I picked up a kit which was unfortunately the wrong size wheel for my 1510, but the axel would sort of work. It came with washers to compress the bearing core. I tried it with the factory wheels and it became evident whey they ignore the bearings, they barely turn.
If I score the right size wheel I'm tempted to look for actual free-spinning bearing replacements (similar to skateboard bearings). But I think modification would be necessary to use anything other than the factory axel with the 1510s, as the 3rd party axel caps do not fit in the wheel well cleanly.
That said, an inline skate style wheel of the right size is still an upgrade even without the bearings doing what they are supposed to.

Has anyone modified the cases to larger spoke wheels, to allow clearance over gravel or rocky roads and paths? Even the softer Urethane wheels do not provide that kind of improvement.

Hey thanks for the comment. It probably would have been better to have been a bit more scientific with measuring the difference. The end result is that is sounds just like any other piece of luggage that has rollerblade style soft wheels, unlike the somewhat unique hard pelican wheel experience. Thanks for watching.
I'm going to try to upgrade my wheels but also I have a problem that my case gets unstable and would like to move the wheels out further.
I'm in the process of buying a 1615 in the color orange. If you had to do it over again would you buy a yellow one or just get black to hide scuff marks. I want a orange one so I immediately notice it at baggage claim. Thank you 👍
Hey, great question! I bought the yellow one originally because they were cheaper than the black version at the time & all of the companies I worked for had black cases. I would 100% buy a bright color case again and have traveled extensively with a bigger green pelican I also had for a while. Scuffs are just as bad on black cases & usually worse with age. This yellow one hides a lot of abuse.

Is the new wheel larger in diameter than the Pelican wheel? I think pelican wheels are too small for some surfaces.
Your only limit on what diameter you order is the distance between the axle and the housing. They have a few different models depending on the case you're working with these days, but you can go up by a mm or two from stock on almost all of them.
Any experience with the wear and tear? Looks like the old hard Pelican wheels were pretty beat up!
bwvids I honestly haven’t had this case out enough recently to give a real opinion. They are holding up fine so far, and the sidewalks here in dc are brutal. I’ll snap a photo and post an update somewhere on the website this week.

Don't do it. The new wheels will not last - the dry rot fast and are softer so they get cuts and chunks knocked out of them. Stay with the standard issue and you will be happy.
The original Wheels do not last also, mine fell apart after 8 years

Any tips for if the original axle is stuck? I was able to get one side out but the other won’t budge.
Hey Tori, sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Have you tried using something to push it through with? If you have a c-clamp handy, you could use a short screw (or the other axle) to push it through with the clamp, hopefully it will free up once you get it moving a little bit.
