    I am a traveling photographer and my 1535Air recently cracked in the field. Pelican is refusing to honor their "lifetime guarantee of excellence" warranty and instead being very passive in their emails and phone calls. Seems they are riding on the brand name at this point without actually standing by a quality product.

    I use Pelican Air cases both as carry on and checked bags. Through multiple trips to China, Thailand, Singapore and Philippines, they are great.
    Only thing that is annoying is when you land back in USA at 11pm and US Customs is convinced they are used for using commercial goods, not my personal belongings.
    I have had to answer as to why I use a commercial case like this as luggage and tell them because airlines abuse your luggage, let it get wet on the tarmac ruining your belongings then they let me pass. Of course, I usually offer one more time if they want to inspect my dirty laundry after a 2 week international trip.

    I just started getting into scuba diving and I noticed a lot of the veterans and old boys use the big Pelican air case for their dive gear. They’re expensive, but I’m really considering it.

    The wheels should be changed to softer rollerblade wheels. Less vibration better for the lenses when rolling on sidewalks or bumps. Pneumatic tires would be best. Load the lenses and body near the top of the case.

    The problem with Peli cases is if you have to fly. With a lot of Airlines moving between 7-10Kg in-cabin limits, greatly limits what you can take into the cabin due to the base-weight of the case.

      Some airlines allow 10kg, and when they see you with a case small enough they don't even ask about the weight.
      Source: i work in an airport

    • @brian576
      @brian576 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They have a 7kg limit in Europe? My backpack already already weighs around 21lbs (9.7kg) with 1 body, 3 lenses (1 of which is only the cheap 50mm), laptop, portable hard drive, headphone, water bottle, compact umbrella, headphone, Nintendo Switch, and some miscellaneous cables. Was interested in this so I don't need to keep killing my back.
      But if US or Asian airlines start adapting those stupid limits it'll be a waste of $300 dollars.

    I have their 1510 and it is excellent. It may survive driving your puckup truck over it. It is a good chair, in an off-site shoot. Solid material walls and its empty weight is 6 kg (13.2 lbs.).
    This new version 1535 Air seems the same design but with the honeycomb reinforcement it is a lot lighter at 4.5 kg (9.9 lbs.) A Rimowa Cabin S classic carry on seems extremely light, MRP £720, but actually weighs 4.2 kg (9.26 lbs.) Take the divider insert out and use for regular travel. For photography, look at 3rd part insert from TrekPak (1510 may or may not fit). And, one airport on arrival did not release my 1510 on the normal conveyor belt. Luggage handling assumed it held valuables. On a fast business trip with my clothes and toothpaste in it, that felt like bummer. As it is very strong, I am not afraid to check it last minute upon boarding (and get some reward for helping free cabin space.) As alternative to the 1510 I have a Tenba Roadie Air Case Roller 21 carry-on )in fabric looks but internally reinforced and strong enough to seat a 200 lbs 6' 1" person.) Its looks give stealth properties. Still, if the Peli(can) 1535 Air stacks on the 1510, I had preferred that as 2nd case. (The third one is a humongous 1560). That still fits on a shelf in a 50 cm (about 20") wide Ikea cabinet if 60 cm (about 24") deep. One shelf for each case and sliding in and out is easy.

  • @Man0fMetal
    @Man0fMetal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I have had over 25Kg as carry on a few times. Rule is. as long as it looks light when you are handling it. no one will check how heavy it is. and flight crew don't carry a scale as far as i know :D

    • @TheLokCheung
      @TheLokCheung  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agree, I once thrown my weekend bag a bit too hard at check-in counter and was asked to put it on the scale; it was VERY obviously why I was asked to weight the same bag I had used for so many times when that was the ONLY time I was asked to weight it! After that I always make it look easy to handle my carry-on in front of airline staffs, even if it's not!

      I'm no pilot but I was pretty geeky about airliners~ I believe there are sensors on almost all modern airliners that can "weight" itself, but I also know that pilots still calculate weight the "old" way, based on fuel, cargo and checked luggages were weighted, and predetermined assumption on passengers + carryon + water/food. I don't know the exact procedures and why pilots still do the old ways when there's system onboard to weight the plane, but my best guess is they would cross reference the reading from computer and their own calculation. Anyway, I believe even a video crew of several overweighted carry-on luggages, it's close to nothing to the total weight of the plane.

    I need a Pelican camera case even less than you do and I keep trying to convince myself I don't need one. I have settled on telling myself that I can store my stuff in there just in case there is ever a flood or a burst water pipe in my house.

    Great gear case. I own both the 1510 and 1535Air and I think the 1kg penalty on the 1510 is worth the extra protection. I can stand on/jump up and down on the 1510. I can't do that on the 1535 Air without worrisome flex on the walls, and I think I could potentially fracture it. If I had to purchase again, I would not purchase the 1535Air and stick with another 1510 for peace of mind. Depends on how much that weight savings is worth to you.

  • @spytromics
    @spytromics 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I have the same case, and it fits the carry on dimensions for the US exactly. With the expansion in the top of the case, I can pack all of my camera gear and my notebook. I pack a soft, canvas shoulder bag in my regular luggage to use as a day bag.

    Its weight is listed at 4kg??? So with most airlines nowadays switching to 7kg carry on limit, you are limited just to 3kg of gear before you are risking high fees or forced checking in of your precious cameras. Not a good deal.

    • @CJDavies
      @CJDavies 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had the older (& even heavier) Peli 1510 since 2015/16 & this is the precise reason that I've never actually tried to take it as carry on. You see plenty of people getting away with it, but sod's law says the first time I try it they will demand to weigh it, find it's way over the limit, insist I check it (at vast expense), then smash it in the hold & compensation won't cover a fraction of what's inside. It's a nice idea, but it literally relies upon flagrantly ignoring the rules & just hoping that they don't ask to weigh it.

    I have the 1510 and it's a solid case. Only problem with the Peli 1510 are the wheels which get all the vibrations from rolling into the case and equipment. There a Mod that you can replace the original wheels with roller skate wheels ( which I did) and it's much better. Easy to do and find on google

    Typical Pelican case - I used them for transporting gear for years. Built like a tank.

    Lok, as nice as the Pelican 1535 is, the Nanuk 235 beats it. The Nanuk has much better latches that are more secure, easier to lock and unlock, and it has much nicer smoother wheels. It has a better sliding handle. It's the same size as the Pelican 1535, and has the same air pressure gauge. But Pelican gets more publicity because of their military contracts. I have the old heavier Pelican 1510, but I also own the Nanuk 935 and larger 950. The wheels on the Nanuk and smooth like rollerblade wheels, but the wheels on the Pelican are hard plastic that are rough from day 1. Some people have figured out a way to change the wheels on the Pelican to smoother wheels.

      @@HarvyDangerFilms yes, the brand name is Nanuk, and the model the same size as the Pelican 1535 is the 935.

    Anyone ever see Pelican cases at the airport and think what kind of expensive gear that person is carrying?

    • @jamesfarr2398
      @jamesfarr2398 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The simple solution to that is just pull off the Pelican labels on the outside of the case. Especially if you’re checking them as luggage, I believe it deters theft from luggage as well as theft of your Pelican cases when checked as luggage.
