My favourite memory is raven’s character loading, her running to see the changes, and immediately getting stung and knocked out.
I’ve never understood people who have an issue with modding because I spent a lot of time on new leaf, and practically everyone I knew had a modded island. We’d use the island editor to put tree stumps and weeds in the water, add multiple rivers (since terraforming didn’t exist), create natural paths etc. it’s been a huge part of animal crossing culture for absolutely ages

my roommates and I stayed up for HOURS hunting for raymond one day, buying nook miles tickets from nookazon, keeping track of every villager we saw on a list, trading out who was on controller duty, until finally, 300+ islands deep at 3 am, we got the cat.
and then my roommate never played animal crossing again.
I had star trees on my island and I really think they added a little something to it. I was FURIOUS when they got patched and its not like I would've been AS mad if Nintendo just got rid of it themselves but I was so pissed off cause that one guy was so AGAINST star trees and modding in general he made it his "job" or something to mass report islands ON STREAM that I'm sure Nintendo got wind of the star trees because of him.
It wasn't ACNH either, he went after ppl in the Pokemon community for hacking and modding as well and any other game, idk what his problem was.

The way i fled from the island the poor dodo pilot just flew me to when i glimpsed raymond--- like i never particularly liked or disliked him but the stuff going on around him in the fandom was exhausting and icky (some might even say insane). My crops shriveled, my skin broke out in hives, etc etc
The sanrio amibos were almost impossible to find in Canada! I ordered some little discs on Etsy that you could scan and work just like the cards but right after getting the order the shop was taken down and I heard people were being threatened with lawsuits. That time was so crazy
I just bought normal nfc stickers and waited til the .bin file of the amiibo data dropped online.
It was a quiet time for me haha

funnily enough, raymond was my first campsite villager on my second island & i was so so happy lol it only lasted so long until i let him move away. i still have his newton’s cradle in my recycling bin as a tribute to him
I had him for a good bit then gave him to a friend who really wanted him but I saved his flea and put it on a light up podium 😂😂😂

They could have made it at least somewhat rare (like maybe a rare nookmiles island and you have to dig them up, or make it a 1% chance when wishing on a star or something that you get a special 'plantable' star. Maybe it's similar to NL perfect fruit where the trees only spawn so many stars before going bare and losing their leaves.)
Okay but the cards were so insane bc it was basically meant to be like. Online only, limited to ONE PER CUSTOMER and it was BECAUSE of scalpers ruining gaming drops in the past for nintendo like this, and then the day came and target PUT THEM ON THE SALES FLOOR BEFORE THE ONLINE SALES WENT LIVE and let people buy as many as they wanted so people who were following the rules didn't get them and scalpers got ALMOST ALL OF THEM. I waited in the target app for 3 hours! Refreshing constantly for hours to get them the second it unlocked and then I checkout and it said they were sold out. I was at work. I had to refresh for hours until i learned how they screwed this up. I ended up buying fake ones because I wasn't gonna buy $10 cards for like $64+. I am personally victimized by target limited item scalpers.
my favorite ACNH quarantine moment was my bestie who was visiting home for spring break and got stuck there having her birthday party in acnh and us all bringing her little gifts and playing little games!! It was truly like that first time I had met some of those people lmao
I remember the Sanrio amiibo fiasco so vividly. I remember when the trailer for them dropped and everything. I was super excited because the releases date was actually my birthday! So me and my bestie woke up super early to try and get them. We even went to target cause we heard some stores actually had employees stock them on shelves by accident and people would be able to go in and buy them. Unfortunately we didn’t get them. I eventually did get my own pack but at the time I only wanted Marty and Chai on my island, so i asked my friend to make me their amiibos. (A whole other topic but you can buy blank NFC Cards/chips and make your own amiibos using a DS. That’s how Etsy sellers make amiibo coins)

I’m only a minute in but I just want to say as a longtime animal crossing fan (started playing Wild World in 2006, and have played every version since then), I could have never predicted the popularity of the game and even less all of the weird things that stemmed from it. I literally was made fun of in school for liking Animal Crossing and now (or at least, four years ago) it was the big thing. I’m really happy it got so popular because now I have so much official merch such but it is also the wildest turn of events for me

yeah, they were available since the update for welcome amiibo in everywhere except north america, but amiibos arent region locked anyways so people could have gotten them anyways

i feel like cottagecore was so iconic because not only was it a first in ACNH, but i feel like i’ve never seen or heard of that aesthetic anywhere before. now i see it in minecraft, art styles/accounts in instagram, pinterest vibes, etc. maybe it’s just everywhere because i saw it on ACNH first, but it’s really blown up everywhere kinda.
also- i feel like DIY amiibos on like etsy were a really big thing. i bought a few but there were so many online of people making those and made it easier to get the ones you wanted in particular.
One of the worst parts about the Sanrio amiibo cards is that they weren’t even brand new! They were released in 2015/16, but only in Japan and UK. I’m glad they did get a US release though
The Path was mimicking the original grass wear in previous games, hence the name “the path” - it was so funny because there was so many complaints of the grass wearing too quickly in previous games, that when Nintendo finally basically said, enough - you can lay out your own path (island designer) people realized they missed how the worn down grass looked! 11:54
I remember the 2.0 event release..
I woke up at 4 am to shower cause I was sick.. and I turned on my tv to 18 videos , including your stream about the release. I IMMEDIATELY ran to my phone, and put on your stream, ran to get my switch and turned it on .. updated it and bought the DLC ! I got in trouble for screaming at 4:36am and waking my mom up💔

I don't play animal crossing anymore but this was fun to see all of these moments. I remember every single one. It was so crazy how intense the fanbase was at the start of the game and how many cool things happened
the night 2.0 dropped early I was so hyped, me and my sister were freaking out in texts and rushing to update our switches
hearing “The Path” really unlocked so many memories. as soon as it got popular, that was the beginning of spending more time customizing my island than actually playing. really reminded me of spending most of my time playing The Sims 4 in CAS than actually playing the game 😭

ACNH was the first animal crossing game I played, Raymond was one of the villagers who randomly moved onto my island and I had no idea about the Raymond obsession until I mentioned it to my friend and she explained it to me lol
I worked at Target (and still do) during the whole Sanrio fiasco and it was definitely a mess. People were coming in having fits over them and trying to find ways around the quantity limits, trying to make things fairer. Funny how because they just sit on a peg and nobody buys them. The novelty definitely wore off. Hopefully if they do do another similar thing for the next game that it's handled better to prevent that much chaos and frustration.

I got raymond TWICE and didnt want him. It was because i had mostly cats and the islands kept showing me cats. I gave him to my friend then i saw how aggressive people were online and got spooked. So the second time i was going go give him away i looked on nookazon for someone who had him in a wishlist and other villagers. I messaged this girl who wanted lolly and raymond. I told her i had her and she came over to surprise surprise get raymond during the peak of the online rampage it was causing. I was just glad to be out of the situation and the girl was pretty happy too. Whoever you were i hope you had fun and enjoyed raymond ❤ mitzi is my favorite

I think one that was like. Peak Pandemic Animal Crossing was AOC participating in the graduation of a student in epidemiology, doing a whole speech for them in Animal Crossing and watching them cross the digital stage. It was very sweet and touched me as a college student at the time who was initially set to graduate in the spring of 2020 before shit got overthrown.

I can speak for previous AC games with regards to The Path: large, multi-tile codes were already a thing, but there wasn’t an option for transparency and you had fewer custom design slots. The Path had more versatility though

Oh gosh... I worked for Target in the electronics department back when those Sanrio amiibo cards dropped. That day was a NIGHTMARE. The phone was constantly ringing from people asking if we had any cards left (no), asking why their order got cancelled (we ran out), asking when we would get more in (i don't know). And the people who actually came in to buy the cards, well, most of them were pretty nice, but that shift is the first time I got someone kicked out for yelling at me. Fun times, fun times. People were similarly wild when the series 1-5 cards came out, especially the 5s.
I remember how I used to want an aiimbo card and Nintendo online so badly
3-4 years later I still don’t have them 😔

The Sanrio amiibos were even crazier knowing that they were added in new leaf’s welcome amiibo dlc…for Japan only. I don’t think they could move in proper, but you could get the items at least. Either way people who played new leaf had a special kind of hell where we’ve waited years for them to finally bring these cards over (the og Japan releases could still be used for jp consoles from what I remember) only to do this LOL

Someone came to my island to get her, they told me she wasnt in boxes, but they were so nice about it omg. They said "she's not in boxes" and told me what it meant. Core memory right there

I played Animal Crossing for the first time in a while and all of my villagers were like "Why haven't you talked to me in 9 months?" and I picked up 100+ weeds, ran over all of my cockroaches, the whole deal. It was crazy.
Re: "What Raymond Meme Videos?" - There was a trend of going into trading servers, posting some variation of "Raymond in boxes" or "Giving out Raymond for free!" (despite not having him) and then filming your Discord DMs immediately piling up to the tens of of hundreds as people rushed to ask you for him, then uploading the result to TH-cam. Usually there was added dramatic music for comedic effect. I saw at least two or three of these back in the day.
I remember when Raymond was popular, I got him as my first ever campsite villager, and I was obsessed 😭😭😭
A few things:
I feel like many of the players who started in new horizons don't really realize how prevalent hacking was within the community in earlier titles. Hacks for aesthetic reasons became especially popular in new leaf due to the increased level of customization that game gave. So, when new horizons came around, star trees and the like just seemed like the logical next step and didn't seem like a huge deal. It was suprising how much backlash they got.
In regard to paths, most people in older games had very straight and narrow paths because there was no way to have parts of designs be transparent. Many paths were designed to look like they were made of bricks.
Island themes were VERY much a thing in older games, particularly new leaf. People would name their towns and player characters after a certain theme (For example, I remember there was a chess themed town with the players being named King, Rook, Bishop, and Knight. My own town was themed after hot drinks like tea and coffee) and then decorate their towns according to that theme. Player houses would be decorated like a shop or school or whatever because we couldn't place things outside. I have very fond memories of stumbling across a town with a kingdom hearts theme in the dream suite and marvelling at how pretty it was.
Am I the only one who remembers when President Biden released an animal crossing island themed around voting polls and had the White House and everything? 😅 peak politics
