The making of "2 INSANE" Formula Offroad buggy - Raw footage behind the scenes

- For the first time, we are publishing the whole prosess of the building of the championship winning Formula Offroad car 2 INSANE.
The car was built by Norwegian Insane Racing in 2014/15. Driver: Martin Michaelsen
The specs:
ENGINE: Mast Motorsports 1000 HP V8 LS7 427 with Whipple supercharger
intercooler + Snow Performance water injection.
TRANSMISSION: 2 step Powerglide from Transmission Specialities.
Built for 2500 hk.
TRANSFERCASE: Special built on Iceland 1:1 ratio.
AXLES: Spidertrax housing and knuckles. 9” center.
300M steel driveshafts, CTM joints and 50 degree turn.
DRIVE SHAFTS: with 1410 joints custome built by High Angle Driveshafts.
BREAKS: Spidertrax 13» discs - Wilwood calipers.
STEERING: Complete PSC-hydraulic steering.
WHEELS: 33” Good Year tires x4. Real Racing aluminium rims.
CHASSIS: Tube-chassis. Based on triangles for maximum strenght.
RADIATOR: A top of the line Ron Davis radiator with twin fan.
RACE READY WEIGHT: 2950 LBS - 1340 kg
BUILD TIME: 2000 man hours

We put a lot of time and effort into building the car and everything is made to be easy maintained. The chassis is built by tubes of higher strength than required by regulation and the triangulations makes it very strong. The car only weights about 1340 kg.
The building price of 2 INSANE is $210 000 inclusive labor and VAT
That is what racing is all about!!! Built not bought!!!

That whole crew including the driver are a super incredible team, watching the process of putting the truck together you knew they were going to have great advantage of wins in the competition.
I have a fascination with the raw yet clean way they do the differential covers on these. All those lines and edges yet so clean.

OH MAN, I AM SO HAPPY YOU ARE COMING BACK! You were always my favourite driver, and with a well-named racing team! You guys are totally nuts. Anyway, some of my other favourite drivers are Thor Thorson, and Magnus Magnusson, and Edmund Gudmundsen, and Snori Snorsonson, and shit I just made up those names - *BUT* FORMULA OFFROAD IS THE BEST MOTORSPORT OF ALL TIME!

The baby Whipple makes far more sense than a turbo, instant grunt obviously what you need for these events. Not shitloads of top end power.
I had thought those tyres were maybe special builds but are obviously [up close] speedway tyres with the paddles vulcanised on. Use Hoosier or American racers as the Gooddays go hard and crack. And dont hold air after a few months. Even in the cool and dark.
I wish I could have seen those front hubs, the rear is more or less 'normal' motorsport fare.
I suggest some large thick washers on the engine plate or something will bend and crack. I have seen that in Sprintcars fairly often. And they crash harder as they are a LOT faster. An engine plate up front too would be better.

It seems that Europe builds better off road vehicles then the U.S. I would like to see one of those U.S. rock buggies go and perform in Europe. And one of these Formula off road buggies perform in the U.S.
Its about rhe same. But money always dictates the outcome alone with skills and talents.

Those paddle tires are FANTASTIC!!! Love them. What size are they? Also, what rim width do you use?
They are from 37 to 42 inches and most of the rims are from 14 to 18 inch wide!!

Tig it. Its such a better welding process. Better hold. If my life were on the line, ill opt for the better, cleaner, pure welds.
Rolando Crisostomo Tig welding sure looks better! But we have never ever had a weld break. Never. And we have really put them to the test :-)

The engine cage is removeable. They take it out a few times in this video.
