I had a '63 Rambler with the Rebel Drive Train; 327, 3-spd Stick, 410 Posi. 1st time I took it to "Grudge Races" @ bygone Puyallup, WA Drag Strip, I won 12 races in a row. It took a mighty tough car to beat it in a street race. A LOT of fun!

In the pretty Canadian autumn of 1966, I was 15 years old and was given a thrilling ride in my cousin's boyfriend's '66 Chevy II with the 350 horse 327. The only options were the engine and the posi rear end (and the latter may have been included with the engine, I'm not sure). Not even a radio and with, believe it or not, THREE ON THE TREE (later converted to 3 on the floor). He maintained it was quicker than a 4-speed because he needed one less shift. Must have worked, because to the best of my knowledge he never lost a single street race and a few years later, after he had married my cousin and had sold the car, I saw a very impressive trophy collection in his rec room. Oh, and the following summer of '67, by which time I had a nice fresh driver's licence, he let me take it for a very short drive. Just a circuit through town, and I hardly hammered it, but it still left another vivid and lasting impression on me. Great car. Great memories.

That 66 Chevy ll was too much bang for the buck. That's why it only lasted one year.

Had a 70 396 400turbo 373 posi put a Vega converter in it. Couldn’t hold in the road hardly. Let the ford take off first so we didn’t get tangled up. My wife to be rally got excited if you know what I 0:30 mean she like to ride with me racing. Does anyone have a Time Machine?

Dad had a 1964 Mercury that was fast as hell. 427 V-8. Over 400 horsepower factory. That car kicked down when he stomped on it. It was fun as a kid. The old man like to "blow the carbon" out as he called it. I knew he just had a lead foot.

😂 LOL, My brother a mechanic always said that... He had a number of very fast quick muscle car's. A Chevy Impala with a believe the 327 , and a Pontiac with a big block it was a Bonneville 400 I think. My father had a Chevy wagon that had a 350 that would stomp it spun the tires no brake pedal needed just put foot on accelerator pedal too fast and the back tires would smoke as it accelerated. But the Olds tornado with 455 was insanely fast. As was the dodge palara 440s and Lincoln s with 460s. He had 2 of each. The palaras were police interceptor's. I myself had a Fiat 131 I never lost a race with that car never. 3 Corvettes left in the dust yes it spun the back wheels pinned you to your seat back. Also a type Lt Camaro I loved that sleeper. I also had the Chevy Nova 2 but it was only the straight 6 with 3 on tree.

In the spring of 1967 I got off work at the chemical plant at 11 p.m. and went car shopping.
Back then nobody thought anything about someone looking at used cars at midnight. At the Plymouth dealer's lot I found a beautiful 1966 GTO body color Candlelight Cream with black vinyl top and black interior. I pulled in for a closer look. Next to it was the plainest brown Plymouth Savoy you ever saw. As I walked up I looked inside the Plymouth and saw a Hurst 4-speed shifter. Curious I opened the hood and there was a Hemi with the staggered duel 4-barrel carbs. I drove it the next day, what a beast. I bought the GTO for $2400. The Plymouth was the same price.

Australia did have Coupes as Muscle car, but we had far more Muscle cars made as 4 door sedans, from 1966 to 2017, Holden even made SS Stationwagons with the L6 out of the corvette in them.
Think about seeing a white family wagon at the shops powered by a corvette motor.
or ever seening a Ford Taxi with a 4L Turbo thats able to out run a V8 crown vic cop car.
Sleepers in Australia were off the charts when it came to not been seen with 4 doors

In the mid eighties my next door neighbor ( here in New Zealand) built a 327 Chev engine and put it in a Holden sedan, Iv'e got no idea really what he did to it , but I've never heard another engine with such a lumpy idle. He took me for a ride in it , and it was the fastest car I've ever been in , the acceleration was what I'd describe as violent, and I was a bit scared actually, I dont much like being a passenger generally. I had a Holden with a 400 Chev in it that was definitely no slouch and massively torquey , but that 327 was on another level.

My father in law bought new a 1966 Caprice with PS, PB, AC, 4SP and a 427, 4:56 rear. He told me that he could do mid 13’s or if he put on slicks, high 12’s. Sometimes they would put him up against corvette. When I asked why he sold it, he said it only got 4-5 mpg, and it was the only (family) car they had.
My Grandparents bought new a 1964 olds cutlass F85, with a 394 4bbl, 2 speed automatic. They said it was the demo car and they liked it so much, they bought it.

    • @NoStringsAttached777
      @NoStringsAttached777 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That's odd because GM had mandated that an intermediate sized car like the F85 could have an engine no larger than 330 cubic inch. This was for standard model cars that you could find sitting on a lot.The 330 Olds engine was first fitted in 1964 also whereas I believe the 394 was an older design engine. I guess the dealership ordered it as a one off back then. Interesting.

Growing up in Queens NY back in 70s, friends of my parents had a 66 Chevelle 300 2-door post sedan with 283 badges on the quarters. However, the father was a drag racer and built a full-on 427 and stuck it between the front fenders. Left the 283 badges on it and went street racing with it. After a few races everyone knew it wasn't a 283...😎

I had a 68 Nova 327/325,a close ratio 4 speed, positraction a real sleeper. My father in law didn’t believe I got it from the dealer with the way it idled. Great car. Only problem is I was hit by other drivers. The 1st was a drunk driver who put it in the body shop and the worst one was a girl with her mother ran a stop light spinning around damaging about every fender with an estimate more than I paid for the car when it was new. I sold it for parts and bought a Dodge Super Bee 383/335 I think with a 4 speed. It was a good running car.

Back in the 70s there was a popular preacher who told about his dad wanting him to grow up. And drive an adult car. His dad got him an Oyster Grey Plymouth that was apparently one of those “hidden muscle cars”. He said he won more races in that car. If his dad asked about it he would say,”You’re right. It’s what I need.” Lol!

I saw at a car show an original 1966 Dodge Coronet 4 door sedan Hemi car. It was one of a few built as part of a pilot program to test their viability as law enforcement vehicles for federal govt agencies. Ultimately, the extra maintenance (solid lifters, 2x4 bbl carbs, etc) was deemed too expensive, and the program was canceled. That would be an ultimate sleeper, for sure, but I'm not sure if anyone of the general public could order one.

To be fair and honest these cars are totally affordable by today's standards. And considering what they'd be worth today? But for honest comparison, $3,200 in 1968 would be like $28,000 today! Still a hefty chunk of cash! These are so rare today because you could buy a stripped down muscle car,or spend $700-800 more and buy a new Corvette? Or a fully loaded Pontiac Bonneville, Electra 225, Cadillac Calais, you had to choose, just like today, to spend your money wisely!

Had a good friend in HS in the mid 80s that had a Fairlane that he bought for almost nothing, (probably less than a grand) off a dishwashing job. Many of the other spoiled kids back in the day had newer mid 80s Beemers, Mercedes, Camaros, and Vettes.
His Fairlane had a below average appearance (dents, rust etc), but that thing was fast af.
It could have easily roasted an 84 Corvette or an IROC of that year.
Plus people talked Sh?! about how ugly the car was, and would give us looks like we were outcasts.
Unfortunately he sold it out of necessity. I can only imagine what that car would be worth today (fully restored)
