    I'm so glad you're one of the few who actually pauses if you have more than just a couple quick words to say. Other people just talk right through dialogue. One person even completely missed his line about attempting suicide, and unless she reads comments and they told her there, she won't even know this little detail about Joel.

    My read on the knife is that it’s a talisman from Anna, something she passed down to Ellie to protect her, and Marlene knows she doesn’t deserve to keep it so she gives it to the person who had become Ellie’s protector.

    I think Marlene and Joel each have their own agendas and don't want Ellie to give her input. Marlene doesn't want to hear if Ellie says she doesn't want to sacrifice herself and Joel doesn't want to hear if Ellie says she would want to sacrifice herself.

    • @timmokoo5679
      @timmokoo5679 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Joel has an emotional reason for that and Marlene just sees that as a sacrifice worth making (whether Ellie wants it or not). Because you know... the alternative would be to sacrifice humanity.

    18:21 - I initially wondered the same thing. But then I realized Marlene would never have asked Ellie. She and the Fireflies would never risk getting "no" for an answer, so that is why they didn't ask. As a Firefly, Marlene has always pursued her own agenda and ideals, regardless of who got hurt in the doing.

    Yeah, if you're empathetic it really hurts to see Ellie being hurt, especially after how much she lost, including herself, in Part 2. I still hope for a Part 3 where she either finds closure by getting somehow another shot at being the cure, or to at least learn that she herself as a human is also valued and loved, that she matters either way. I keep flashing back to her last conversation with Joel, saying how she should've died at the hospital, and how her life would've 'fucking mattered'.
    It's sad that they removed the photo, same as with the arcade scene from the DLC. They were both very relevant for Part 2.
    The suicide attempt was a nice addition, although it was apparently also part of the game, but way more subtle, to the point where I forgot about it too. But there was like a comment between Joel and Ellie where Ellie about suicide being the easy way out, and Joel said something along the lines of "it isn't that easy, trust me". I'm glad they gave this part a better representation though. It was quite a moment of trust talking about it, and he probably wanted to tell her that it will get better, but it also kinda puts a lot of emotional pressure on her, that she now thinks that she is the reason that he's able to keep going. But it obviously plays into his selfish choice at the hospital. He didn't really do it for Ellie, but for himself. Ellie sort of became his new Sarah.
    Pretty sure Marlene gave him her blade because she noticed that they must've grown a relationship, but was probably not expecting by how much, nor did she knew his backstory with Sarah.
    Oh and Laura Bailey played one of the nurses in the game too, before she became Abby in Part 2. Still feels weird hearing and recognizing her voice, same with Ashley in the beginning, which you can't help but immediately recognize, even when she just grunts and moans. That birthing scene got me pretty hard though, especially because of Part 2. Game Ellie birthing show Ellie is just something poetically beautiful. Anna and Marlene being lifelong friends was also a great addition, which put a lot of weight behind her decision, as this obviously was not an easy choice for her either, even if it was wrong too. But yeah, Marlene did it for humankind and the greater good, Joel for himself. Both took the choice for Ellie, which yes, would've very likely agreed to it, we know that much, but Part 2 solidifies this even further. It also throws us back to Henry & Sam. When Henry shot Sam he realized, all the shit he did for Sam was for naught. Sacrificing Kathleen's brother to save Sam and sacrificing pretty much all of Kansas City was for nothing. Ellie similarly lost her entire identity with them taking this choice from her. Being the cure was her purpose, and Joel took that from her.
    I think show and game both do things better & worse than the other, and both are well worth experiencing, even if you know one of them already.
    I'm definitely ready for season 2 & 3 to break me again.

  • @TimSedai

    I think Marlene didn't ask Ellie simply because her answer wouldn't have changed her course of actions. Marlene has been shown to be rather pragmatic, and there's no discussion in her mind about the life of one girl vs potentially a cure for the world (not saying I agree though). Ellie agreeing or not nto this doesn't matter for Marlene.

    We'll never quite know. But if Joel and Elle were sitting in the room together with Marleen and they asked her if she was willing to die for a potential cure. Then she just straight up says "yes, lets get it over with". at that point Joel might just commit suicide rather than try and go against her wishes.

      Certain Easter eggs have been intentional, like Dina, where they've pretty much confirmed it was meant to be Dina as well, but in this case, it's just a person running for their lives, so maybe Joel let them go since that person wasn't in his way, and wasn't looking to stop him

By not asking she took the middle ground where it would hurt but she could justify it for the outcome and make herself believe Ellie would have been ok with it. • @BipolarBLKSheep
    @BipolarBLKSheep ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I honestly side with Joel. Not about lying to Ellie, but saving her, yes. Obviously, they should have told her. BUT my biggest issue doesnt come from that.
    Firstly, theres no certainty, at all, that they would have even been able to make the cure. As someone who works in the medical research industry, you need a million and a half things to go right and so many resources to create something like that. One doctor, even with Ellies entire brain, is very unlikely to successfully create a cure. Also, why would they immediately go to just removing her brain? Why not do a biopsy? A spinal tap? Blood draw? Plasma? Bone marrow? You should exhaust every option possible before killing your donor because once those samples are gone, they're gone. Also, the conditions and equipment you need to synthesize a cure are very unlikely to come by 20 years after the outbreak, let alone be calibrated and usable, if you do happen to find them. When it comes to something like synthesizing a vaccine or cure, you have to be incredibly precise to be able to replicate the results over and over again. Thats just scratching the surface of the impossibility of success.
    Second, lets just assume that they do miraculously create a cure. How the hell are they supposed to distribute it? How do you get the word out? How do you keep the cure stable? What if its temperature sensitive? I dont see them having -80 freezers on large transports. Even the logistics dont make sense. You think they will be able to get this precious cure out to the masses without some raiders stealing it, or the cure spoiling due to a multitude of different conditions? There are just so many reasons why it wouldnt work, and very few reasons to believe it would.
    Also, once you inject the cure, it doesnt save you from being torn to shreds. It only saves you from turning. As the outbreak progresses, you get more and more Clickers and Bloaters who have literally zero interest in turning you, and will instead just shred you like cheese. All of those things to consider, and many many more, are why I would have not even hesitated to get Ellie the hell out of there. However, once she was safe, I would have told her the truth about it all. Even if she did want to give her life for it, the chance that it would have been worth it, was slim to none.
    Thanks for coming to my TEDTalk.

Even with a large team of professors and doctors during a normal 2023 and present-day technology, making a vaccine for Covid takes a huge amount of time. Let alone a world gone down in 2003. The Fireflies were a bunch of hypocrites trying to save the world but also became rebels and destroying FEDRAs and what's left of the government. I also wouldn't count on them if I was Joel. At the very best, they will say to Joel that the test subject wasn't enough to make the cure/vaccine, and that they will need more "samples". Meaning for Joel, losing Ellie was a 100%, with only about 40% chance of getting a cure in one-go.

      I don't think it makes much sense to put Owen there. It's way too random. I'm pretty sure it is meant to be Abby, which the other guy even got her some suppressing fire so she could escape, since she's the daughter of the leader of that place.

    I really hate the way the show makes this part look like an active shooter in a high school. In the game Joel is rescuing ellie and kills everone trying to kill him.

    They should have started with a biopsy instead of jumping straight to murder. It's a fungus, you'd only need a little bit to grow more. They didn't even shave her head, were they going to get to the brain through the neck?? I'd definitely go to another hospital for a 2nd opinion...

    Marlene should explain the stakes and chances to Ellie and give her the choice, and at least a few days to make a decision. Then Ellie should have the chance to talk to Joel and to explain to him her decision. Marlene did nothing of that, she took the choice from Ellie and she pushed Joel to do the only thing he was programmed to do. And then Joel lied to Ellie, 'cause he had hope to save her the guilt. So, everything that happened was IMO Marlene's fault. She betrayed Elie, she betrayed Anna, she betrayed Joel, and she betrayed humanity, because she was so blinded by her "noble cause" to save the people that she forgot about the humans.

    • @timmokoo5679
      @timmokoo5679 ปีที่แล้ว

      You think they would let anyone to choose in that situation? I seriously doubt that. Yea she betrayed a lot of people to save humankind. It seems like she was very aware of that. She was not happy about it but you know... her feelings about it were clearly not the priority there. It was about survival. I don't think she considered herself a good person for doing it but that was irrelevant.

    I think the heart of the issue between Joel & Ellie is that this is where they find out their purposes are at conflict with each other. Joel learned to love again and is protective over it. Ellie understands what her immunity means to the world and believes it's her purpose to save it. They formed a bond on this excursion, but essentially who they are & what they believe will inevitably force them to grow apart if there isn't any trust or respect for each other.
    And that's where Joel's selfishness is an act of betrayal, not just for condemning humanity, but making her immunity redundant and robbing her of her purpose. Now she has to continue to live in this hellscape where all the people she lost and will continue to lose will have died in vein because there was a chance to save it, but it was taken away from her. Now everything she went through was for nothing and now has to exist day to day knowing the horror she continues to witness could've been stopped. Her survivor's guilt will make her resent Joel, and rightfully so. It wasn't his decision to make and these are the consequences of the human condition.
    Love can heal, nurture, make us whole. But love can also be toxic, it can make us possessive, controlling, manipulative and the fear of losing that love can make us do terrible things. That's where it walks a fine line of being a selfish act. The fact that Joel lied tells me he's aware of how Ellie feels about wanting her immunity to matter and that she would not be ok with the decision he made for her. Not only did he make that decision for her, he makes sure it will never happen by killing the doctor and taking away the chance for a cure permanently. I'm sympathetic to how much pain Joel has endured, I am. But one thing I do know is that no matter how unbearable the pain we suffer, it's not fair to make our pain theirs. And it doesn't justify taking away our loved one's purpose because we refuse to live without them. And then lie about it.
    This violation of trust is deep and I don't see their relationship ever being the same again. That's why there was underlying tension between them at the end. Joel was finally opening up about Sarah and was willing to bond with Ellie, but she was despondent. He thought she was going to be fine with the decision he made for them, but she is not. Which I think is the katatlyst to their relationship falling apart.

    Ellie made the decision to live with Joel over sacrificing herself for a cure the moment she decided to go with Joel over Tommy. She just didn't realise it . . . especially cuz shes a child.

    Not only did Marlene not ask her(Because she didn't care about what Ellie would want), the simple fact is her plan was never going to work. it was critically flawed from the very beginning, but her and the Fireflies savior complex can't let them see it. The entire plan is based on a GUESS backed by absolutely no evidence. The Doctor(A surgeon, BTW, not a researcher) hasn't met Ellie, examined her, as far as we know there hasn't even been the bare minimum of bloodwork done, let alone a Spinal Tp that would be needed to know if it was in her brain like they think. But let's say the guess was right... So what? Society is over, and no amount of Cure, even if they could get it to "everyone" is going to fix that. As Tess put it "You may be immune but you can still be torn apart." The Infected are still out there, still going to attack people and kill people, and some of them can live for 20 years!! And we have slavers, murderers, cults, and cannibals out there. Those people aren't going to just reintegrate. No, Society is over and done with as we knew it, and a cure might make it marginally safer, but only marginally. In the end the only real difference between the world Marlene's action would create and the one Joel's actions did, is in Marlene's Ellie is dead, and in Joel's a bunch of idiots are dead.

    • @timmokoo5679
      @timmokoo5679 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think humans being immune would still mean at least the zombies could be get rid of. There's no going back but they could make the world much safer again. And as far as we know, their plan was indeed the best bet. I do not know what test were made exactly but clearly they had examined her blood (since they knew how her immunity worked and cordyceps growing in the brain seems to be common knowledge (probably even from before the outbreak). Even Joel knew that and he's no doctor.
      For the slavers etc... it would take time but an organized group like FEDRA can eventually take over, bit by bit. They seem to be capable of dealing with people who do not... reintegrate.

    who said he did it for himself..!? Why, in order for it not to be selfishness, he had to do it for Ellie!? He did it not for the sake of Ellie, but for the humanity that sits in people ...
    If every person in the world of cordyceps had the same humanity as Joel, then the world would have existed perfectly in a pandemic...
    And so they offered him to become one of them - to betray his soul, betray humanity.
    By the way, I'm almost sure that Drakman read The Brothers Karamazov, because there the heroes faced the same moral choice...
    ""The happiness of the whole world is not worth one tear on the cheek of an innocent child"" (just from the book)
