Answering Dani’s questions:
Dark Sister is Daemon’s sword, it’s Valyrian steel. That’s the same material the necklace he gave to Rhaenyra is made out of. It’s also the same metal that can kill White Walkers.
The Crab Feeder is an enemy ship captain attacking Corlys’ men in the Stepstones. He got his name due to his gruesome methods. You’ll see more later.
The throne isn’t poisoned, or is it? It’s more a symbolic thing. Aegon (the first Targaryen to conquer Westeros, a century before this) made sure to make the throne extremely uncomfortable, with swords jutting out every which way. It’s the most dangerous seat in the land and he wanted to emphasize that. Viserys is getting cut because he sits on it wrong (notice how Daemon was leaning when he sat on it instead).

Something Ive always thought is that Daemons line of “we all mourn in our own ways” might not even be a lie, and that “The heir for a day” was actually taken out of context and spun by Otto to be an insult. It could have been that was Daemons own little way of honouring his baby nephew. He is a weird dude and makes some weird decisions. But family is very important to him.
The fact the showrunners never showed us how Daemon says it and only shows Otto's recounting is very telling in my opinion.

At this point, King's Landing's crime rate was very high and everyone knew who someone who did something. Prince Daemon's Gold Cloaks kept a record of everyone accused of various crimes (rape, theft, murder) and rounded them up. And no... not for questioning.

So the technology is actually better here than in Game of Thrones. The showrunners talked about this, as this was the height of the empire, everything was better here than later. There are also real world examples of this, such as Rome, and how after the fall of Rome, technology actually regressed.

19:37, the Starks date back even further than written (Westerosi) history if you can believe it. Their House lore says they go back about 10 000 years by the start of Game of Thrones and that the first King in The North, Brandon Stark, helped build the Wall, fought the Wights alongside the Children of The Forest and established The Night's Watch so they're one of the oldest Houses in Westeros

When Aegon I Targaryen, aka “Aegon the conqueror” or “Aegon the dragon” took over Westeros he did so wielding the Valyrian steel sword Blackfyre and riding the dragon Balerion “the black dread” together with his two sister-wifes: Visenya, who wielded the Valyrian steel sword “dark sister” riding Vhagar and Rhaenys (same name as “the queen who never was”) who rode Meraxes (Rhaenys prob had a sword, but not a named one).
You saw Balerion’s skull (he was HUGE) when Viserys was talking to Rhaenyra in the dungeon. Viserys also had the sword Blackfyre when he sat on the throne banishing Daemon. And you saw Daemon swinging Dark Sister around.
Arya in game of thrones mentioned Visenya, Vhagar and Dark Sister pretty early on. And they also mentioned in this episode “Daemon would be as bad of a king like Maegor (the cruel), or worse”. Maegor was Visenyas son and let’s just say he wasn’t a very good king…
The Targaryens are from a race called Valyrians (just like the Velaryons who are the black silver haired people) from Valyria. Valyria is destroyed and the Targaryens are the last dragonriders. They conquered the Seven Kingdoms and unified them and have been its rulers for over a century at this point.
Incest is normal for Valyrians to maintain the dragonriding blood but they would never marry child to parent/grandparent. The Targaryens are never struggled to have children due to incest.

The two most considers successor at the Great Council were actually Viserys and Laenor, Rhanes son. Laenor however was just a bit of 7, had no wife, heirs or Dragon. Videos was 23, married, a child on the way and rode Balerion the Black Dread.
It's going to be interesting to see how attitudes change towards certain characters in the future.
Most of the action does occur on the continent of Westeros. This is the city of King's Landing, the castle is the Red Keep (there are certain areas within it where the royal family live, such as Maegor's Holdfast). The dragons are kept at the Dragonpit, a huge domed building atop Rhaenys' Hill (some distance from the Red Keep).
I think that in the book Fire & Blood it wasn't Rhaenys Targaryen vs. Viserys Targaryen at the Great Council, but Laenor Velaryon (Rhaenys's son) vs. Viserys Targaryen.
It was Rhaenys v Viserys. One of the arguments for Rhaenys was that she already had a male heir and she was the first child of the first born. Viserys was the first child of the second born but he was male and his dad was heir when he died.
@@technicoloredzebra he or she is right, they ruled out Rhaenys as an option early on, in the end the decision was between Viserys and Laenor, Viserys being heir to the king's second son, and Laenor being the sole male of the king's eldest son's bloodline.

Just to let you know, Rhaenyra didn't want the throne whatsoever, they just couldn't let Daemon have the claim to it.

Daemon doesn't want the throne, he wants his brother's love and approval. Daemon was 16 years old when the council was deciding who would sit the throne, Viserys or Rhaenys. Daemon raised an army of Hedge Knights and Sellswords to protect his brother's claim should anyone challenge it.
Does he want power? Yes, but not necessarily individual power. He wants power for the family. He wants to restore power and reputation to the name Targaryen.
Is he a dick? Yeah, often, but, like so many George R.R. Martin characters, he's also a good guy quite often, too.

I would recommend watching an episode breakdown video after you finish each episode. It would help flesh out who's who and how they are related to each other. There are a number of channels that do this. For instance, I found "New Rockstars" to be helpful in decoding some of the more obscure stuff.
King Jaehaerys had 2 sons. Aemon and Baelon.
Aemon died having only a daughter, Rhaenys.
Jaehaerys named Baelon as heir.
Baelon died leaving behind 2 sons, Viserys and Daemon.
The King elected to form a Great Council to choose an heir.
By 20 to 1 the lords chose Viserys.
For many this established an ironclad precedent, whereby a daughter could only inherit if there were no legitimate males available.
Viserys named Rhaenyra heir, and forced the Lords of Westeros to acknowledge her rights to the throne.
The Targaryens have 2 Valyrian Steel swords (Like Ned Stark's Ice, or Longclaw wielded by Jon Snow.)
Blackfyre is always wielded by the King.
Dark Sister is often given to the most capable Targaryen warrior.
Visenya Targaryen, Aemon the Dragonknight, Brynden Bloodraven have all wielded the sword.

Daemon doesn't have description in the books. He's said to be tall, lean and dashing. That's not a description of his appearance. And Matt is all that.

Nope, just the oldest humans in Westeros, and it's not exclusive to the Starks, most Northern houses and some riverland houses (like House Strong and House Blackwood) descend from the First Men too.
Targaryens came from a place cald valyria. They came to westeros after valyria hit by a doom( it was a volvanic explosion if i remember correctly). Westeros was a thing before they came. There were 7 kingdoms and aegon conquered them( except dorne, they were taken later) and united them.

In which, the benevolent king Viserys choses to torture his dying wife in cold blood like a guinea pig, instead of getting over the obsessiom of having a male heir and letting her pass naturally and less painfully. Viserys, like a true nobleman of his time, cared more to save his precious little heir instead of his living, breathing wife.
Such a bad take simply because it lacks all context of the situation. It's either they both die or maybe his son lives. Any father at any time ever makes the same choice. It doesn't matter if he was right, it matters here because at that moment for good reason he believes he has only one choice here to save his child. There is no other circumstance ever that he makes even close to the same decision. Idk how you watch this episode and come away with that take.
@@davidpitts5851 In that case I would've given her a painless death first and then try to pry the baby out immediately. It's chance of survival would've been very low, but it would've been a risk worth taking in order to not make her suffer this much. Viserys was guilt-laden for the rest of his life for what happened to Aemma, so he himself probably didn't forgive himself for the decision he made.

The Alicent-Rhaenyra "lost friendship" aspect IS the central driving force of Hotd. It's what provides the show with its emotion, angst & tragedy. Anyone who do not understand this is because they are a petulant Targ Cultist for whom scoring Sports Team dunks is more important than the beauty of the story. They get mad that hotd dares to have substance and nuance instead of being their self-inserf silver queen warlord cosplay/targsryen apology show. How dare the antagonists are themselves victims and made of sympathetic flesh and blood instead of being one dimensional cartoonish mustache twirling doormat villains with no characterization, arc of screentime. The average targ cultist wanted a snow white girlboss warlord vs 65 year old evil stepmom Disney movie. Hotd gave them a greej tragedy like sophocles instead. I guess it's going to be tough luck for all the Disney brained Daenerys self inserts.

You have just been introduced to the most interesting and charismatic character on the show - Daemon Targaryan. He is absolutely mesmerizing. Viscerys is another very interesting character as well. I can't wait to see y'alls reaction to this whole season. It's so good.
