I have a 14" 4/4 antique violin with a warm tone and wondered if it could be a 14" viola? How could I tell if it was a viola instead of a violin?

+Forest Fedoras Well, did wherever you got it from specifically state that it is a violin? It probably is a violin in that case. However, if you are truly not sure, you could compare sounds with a violin that you are sure is tuned and is very much a violin on TH-cam and such, do that. Hopefully you can find out which it is :).

      +Irene Wilder Hi!
Thanks for the reply! It's an antique, so I can't trace it, but I did find out that violas are deeper or wider than violins. My violin is almost 1 3/4" deep and the standard 4/4 violin is 1 1/2" deep so that explains why I'm, getting a more deep, mellow sound. It was very interesting learning the difference between a violin and a viola. Mine could be a 3/4 viola, but it is set up like a violin, so I'll keep it that way. I'd have to change the strings to ADGC, the bridge, and the sound peg to make it into a viola and it won't get the full sound until it is a 15 1/2" viola, mine's a 14". So it'll stay the way it is with a deep, rich, mellow tone. Thanks!

@@51mermaidclaira That sounds like a nice tone for a violin!

read the label. If it says a fraction such as 4/4 or 3/4 then it is a violin. The viola is in inches.
