Good ideas on the match cases on the orange one I have one similar to it with a whistle on the the end of it with a longer ferro rod on the side that works it gives a longer stroke on the rod, but what I do is cut both sides off the box and bend the ends of them in a L shape with the smooth sides inside on the inside of the l so that the strike side faces the outside of the bottle then place one in first with the small end of the l on the bottom then place the matches in then do the same with the other striker but with the small end at the top that way if you lose a striker you still have one to use.
We had green ones in the army they weren't issued but most guys bought them .dad used a 20 g and a 12g slid into each other I still use my marbles case
Another good video Doug. Very informative. One thing you can do is cut a small piece of the stroker paper from your matchbox and glue it inside the orange cap.works great. Just make sure you store the matches tip down. Thanx again Doug.
I cut thin strips of the striking paper and put it on the ridges of the Coghlan's Plastic Match Box and added flint striking wheel inside. Yes I found the striking paper doesnt do very well when wet. Mu solution was to put the match box strip into a small plastic bag. I also put a striking paper on my swiss army knife.
I’ve kept matches in an old plastic film canister for about 30 years now (I keep adding more, not the same matches), and have the striking surface in there. It’s never caught fire. You have to apply some pressure for them to light, and there isn’t much oxygen in there anyway. If you keep a cotton ball to reduce rattling around, that would also work to prevent the matches from rubbing the striker. For the big wind-proof kind, I like the canisters that Nuun electrolyte drink tablets come in. I have a Coghlan’s one, and the color is good, but it’s a strange size. Too big for regular matches and too small for the storm matches. Using the back of the saw blade in a Swiss Army knife is the best way to get sparks, unless you have a carbon steel Opinel knife. Those are the very best. That’s another thing I’ve had for 30 years.
Yes maybe I'm being too paranoid. I can't remember having matches light accidentally on me. But then in an emergency when I needed the matches, would Murphy's Law kick in?
@@DougShoeBushcraft Murphy’s law is already in action when there’s an emergency. Your video about wearing proper clothes is one of the most useful ones on TH-cam regarding survival. I’m in Maine - maybe I’ll see you out there some time.
Glue some sand paper Doug. If you are only using strike anywhere matches. We cant get strike anywhere matches here in New Zealand 🌏🌿🌿🌿🥝 but i am going to try make my own. I saw some videos on You Tube with some ideas. Nice video brother. The coglans case would be ok being orange easy to see if you drop it. And its water proof. The tiny ferro rod looked useless. The metal cases look good. Expensive Shipping down under to us.👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😊👍
I had no idea you were posting tonight, I wish it could be on a certain day/night even if it’s not every week at least we will know when we should check
Every Thursday night at 9 pm EST. I work hard to try to keep that schedule. If I'm going to miss a Thursday, I'll give you a heads up (youtube community post, facebook page post, etc).
Nice one. Great to see some budget possibilities. Personally I just spend the dollars and by the Titan storm proof matches but not everyone has that luxury.
That’s why I like Doug’s channel because it’s not all about buying you know high-tech expensive gear it’s you know back in the 60s and 70s we used to dip our matches in wax you know it’s like now we got all this high-tech stuff that people use and everything it’s like I like Doug’s approach he just simplifies everything you know so many things that we gotten over the years because I don’t do that stuff anymore, 2023 I hope to do more of it
I liked the strike anywhere from the 1980’s. I could even strike them on my Levi’s 501 leg seam. But I guess that means the could self ignite to easily.
On that orange container you have there that you bought take the striker off of matchbox and just put it inside and that way it will stay dry and you’ll have some of the striking matches on. You might need to put the striker you know lay it on the cylinder there in so you have something for firm to strike against.
You could add an exacto type blade or a snapped off hacksaw blade in to the coghlans to use for a striker on the ferro rod if you have a bit of say cotton ball or jute twine soaked in wax and or petroleum jelley you can light it readily with nothing more than your little striker, also put the striker paper inside the lid then it'll be dry .
I'm surprised your prescription bottle leaked. I've never had one do that and I've left them outside for months at a time. If the conditions are right and especially if they can catch sunlight they can form condensation but it's pretty rare. I've got a couple of the orange match safes but if given the choice between them and a good prescription bottle I'd choose the prescription bottle. I just trust it not to leak more than I trust the orange one's.
You might try some super fine sandpaper as striker paper.... I would think that would work... And it might even be something good to carry if you like to do wood carvings ...
Yes. I've been having videos premiere every Thursday at 9 pm EST. I'm working hard to keep posting regularly. If I was going to miss a Thursday, I'd give people a heads up
Hi Doug 😊, thanks for some neat ideas on match cases, a small paper clip would keep your striking cardboard from opening up in the orange case,?, I've found that matches kept long term tend to degrade, and matches I dipped in wax to waterproof them are ok in the short term, but I recently found some from 4, -5yrs ago and none of the waxed ones would strike , even after scraping off the wax ?, have you any suggestions on another substance that would waterproof them ,whithout degrading them ?, Ps, these were strike anywhere matches. Cheers Doug, stay safe mate, and may your God go whith you, Stuart UK.
nice tip about the paperclip. Thanks. I don't try to dip waterproof my matches. I just put them in waterproof containers. So I can't help you with something that might be better than wax.
Probably maybe you should get her or you could getting won’t tell you what you should get lol but maybe you could get a really mild file short one that might fit in most pill containers and you could carry that separately in a pill container, and I said carry it separately because you know you wouldn’t want to put it in your pocket and have a have a poke a hole through your pocket or your backpack or whatever you know you wouldn’t wanna damage your file or lose it by not putting it in a container
And you know your life may depend on it, so I would definitely probably choose the Koglin‘s, but if somebody was Reno, Dire Straits situation, and they didn’t have anything and no money you know the pill bottle is certainly be a good back up certainly has value in the backpack would be a few of the pill bottles you know most definitely would have value in a backpack because you never know
Put a loaf of bread and your cut out of the square that’s probably twice the size of the top of the opening and just put your cover on on top of that plastic should seal out the water I would think
Thank you. I was planning on mentioning that on the channel. It's been busy with family and work. I'll send you an email. I have your email address from past correspondence
You could always take a bread, wrapper you know the metal ones that you twist and you take a bread wrapper I have a whole soup king full of them I’ve been saving just in case you know what I mean lol just never know
yes that is a poor man thing from way back. The plastic bread bags tend to be a lot thicker and stronger than the disposable plastic shopping bags, for example.
Everything out honey cone on the top of that you remember something if you just take it in your cut a real thick strip of it and you just fold it up like you did the match box one put it on the inside I don’t work just fine. You know it’ll work just fine. Because that’s only for an emergency situation that matchbox gets moisture on it you know like condensation they’re probably not gonna work but I don’t know what that honeycomb one is made out of but that might work better. If it gets moisture on it, you know and if you wrap it in a paper towel, that’s not gonna help it I need that puppy defeat the purpose of wrapping it. That’s my two. Cents.
Few things: 1. Does anyone here know? Is it “cog lans” or “cough luns”? 9 years old my first box of waterproof matches in 1981 were Coughlan’s. Green box. Fisherman in weather gear on the cover. Big deal. A young trekkers first matches. 2. Don’t forget to check Amazon under “cylindrical pill containers” to see numerous bombproof spun aluminum options. Like old school Maglites for your matches. 3. Lastly Amazon sells a 5 piece set of “pill canisters” that look like 1.5x size twelve gauge shotgun shells. Screw caps. 5 colors. Kinda pricy but in a bandolier they’d make a cool kit. Especially for fowl hunting.
And I haven’t maybe I missed it but I haven’t seen you talk about you know the benefits of duct tape wrapped around something you know I see you have a roll of duct tape you don’t need that much, but like and superglue not recommending anybody use superglue for a cut but that is certainly a very good option Anyways, I do know that you have talked about the superglue in the past.
And the other thing is to talk a lot about a lot about Bushcraft, but you’re talking anything about trapping and I would rather have two 110 conabears would a fire arm because you know a 110 I mean that’s perfect for dropping squirrel you know always always always keep peanut butter on you anyway even if you’re not trapping and of course some states you don’t need a trapping license course and other state you do Maine in New Hampshire. You do need to take a trapping course but that is a great thing to have in your quiver so to speak is a trapping course so you can trap because you can have all the heat you want but if you’re very hungry and dehydrated, you are pretty much screwed
I always hang onto the end because I like the scripture reading at the end
nice
Great options Doug. Also you can melt candle wax and dip match ends in it so it always stays dry no matter what happens..
thank you. I appreciate info and suggestions like yours

One thing is that water vapour such as dew may get in when liquid does not, so it might need to be gas tight. Great video!
