This was an accidental hack as I was working on another project. However, it's pretty cool and I wanted to share it with you all. Thanks for watching and please leave me a thumbs up (or a thumbs down!) and a comment in the section below. Oh, and don't forget to subscribe!
I hope you patented this great idea ! If you didn’t , then do so quickly because someone wise guy will do it and make millions ! I know , because it happened to me in medical school ! PEACE ☮️ ☮️☮️ and thumbs up 👍 ! ❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️😊😊😊
I used a side cut can opener for mine; the OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener. It leaves enough of an edge without chopping toes if you step on it- my Dad did something similar in the Army!
The most important message I get from this video is showing people how to improvise and having pride in a project which they accomplish themselves without the need to purchase additional items. The Prepper Mentality in practice. Thanks for your video instruction and All the Best .
Repurposing is fantastic, simple repurposing, even better! A bandanna or any square of cotton material tied around the cup hobo style means you can store stuff in the cup without the lid falling off and a square of cotton material has multiple uses itself.
Great hack James, even if it was accidental! ALSO, for those that have the Stanley two cup cook set, the lid for the Stanley cook set also works on top of the $5 Walmart cup! I have a hiking cook set that I paired the two together and it works great. Cheers!
@@WayPointSurvival and they sell those lids for about 3 to 5 bucks online. I believe you can even get them in titanium for more money than that actually
Yeah that's the same lid I used on this cup also. I like that it's already in my stuff no need to add anything but if it works well in the video I'll consider making one.
I'm going to carry tin snips along with my safety can opener in my bug out bag, along with my flattened nail that I carry in my wallet, this is the best channel to learn practical skills and hacks thank you Mr. James Bender I do enjoy your videos very much
Great adventure, I recently started documenting my own adventures, I love this direction. Good luck on your adventures. Greetings from a Belarusian tourist! 🔥
James that was amazing!! Yeah I bought mine at Walmart to nest with my Stanley 2 cup cook set. I definitely know what I'm gonna do if I misplace the lid for my cook set though.
I like your practical approach to also recycling and everyday use I think you have the best channel yet I have seen of all my channels this is the only one I actually hit the bell on to get update
Hmm... I did the same thing with the top of a #3 can of imported cheddar cheese but only with a 1/4" lip. Riveted the handle with a key ring too. I added a set of drain holes to one side and a vent hole opposite those. Got the idea watching a homeless guy cook his instant noodles in a Walmart tin cup but he used a large tuna can as a lid. Funny thing too was that he was using four tea lights between two bricks as a stove and a pie pan as the hot plate. Great video. Always looking forward to your next hack and skill to teach. Thanks.
Good idea, n good construction...use the rest of the can as a windscreen, after treating the edges...works as a good grill on a small firebowl set after ya drill holes in it !! Jus an idea!🤷👍🐺🧙♂️!!
What another great idea especially if your cup doesn't have a lid or yours doesn't come with one and also now thanks to you I keep a couple of small nails in my pocket kit now works great for making a great sturdy frame for your tarp
Good Idea, i need to make one. I found a sierra cup with a folding handle that i use for a lid, and a coffee cup or oatleal bowl after the water is heated. Thanks, I keep getting your videis in my feed, and enjoy all if them.
Trangia lid # 203250 Lid for Trangia Kettle 200325, 200244 and 200825 fits these awesome stainless cups perfectly. Nice find on the tin can adaptation. Does keep the grey matter alive.....Cheers!
I been using a lid from another cook set for the same cup. Made so many cups of coffee and bowls of oatmeal and bowls of Ramen in that cup. Still looks new-ish too. But this is a great idea
Great job would I use for mine is a canned chicken can also if you take a pair of pliers and kind of grab it from the side and then bend it inwards it'll lock onto the lid a little tighter and also use the pull tab from a Spam can for the pull tab instead of using the key ring other than that great video appreciate everything you do
Nice little hack, I just use the stanley cookset lid as that set lives together anyway. One thing ya may wanna look into James just for quick and ease of use is a deburring tool. It is a handle with a swivel carbide blade. I use it on rigid galvanized conduit a lot. It will make quick work of deburring all your tin can projects.
Thanks again James, that's just what I was looking for. It seems every time I need an idea or hack you always come through for me. Cheers my friend! 👍🇨🇦
❤ you may wish to drill a few venting holes in the lid.... as they similarly have on the commercially made lids. Awesome hack. Love the rivets and handle. Very well done@@🎉
Very nice. I ordered the DZO Universal Cup Lid which fits the GSI cup and Stanley cook set cup. I also got the DZO 25 oz cup with lid, which is a good substitute for the Stanley cup. Currently I have two Condor bottle pouches on my pack with the GSI cup and Nalgene bottle in one and the DZO cup and Nalgene bottle in the other.
If you drill a large hole in the side of the can near where the lid will be cut out from, then snip down to that hole, it'll make it easier to make that 90° turn to cut.
Simpler Ring made of coat hanger in the shape of the capitol letter "D" have a cut at the center of the back of the "D" ring . Put the "L" shaped sides of the "D" fit into the two holes of the lid. Put a crease, bend or valley between the two holes in the lid "o---o" use a chisel or flat scew driver blade or flat punch ect. To bend the crease between holes to the shape of the coat hanger wire "D" shaped ring. My boy scout cook lids were done that way.
Oh wow, I’m an idiot. I totally watched this video and wasn’t even thinking when I asked you about replacing a lid for the cook set. 😂😂 I even commented here about making one. Im going to assume my brain subconsciously sought you out because I had watched this video earlier and knew you would have done something like this. Now I really have a reason to make this lid for my backup cook set. Thanks again!
Perfect perfect perfect again Perfect when I got my cup from Walmart I want to lead for two but this was a good idea I figured I might find a lead somewhere for it but that’s a good idea I like it
Now you know I like this I always do you're such a clever young man. It is pretty cool and I believe my grandson will enjoy making this although I have to get him a cup now but that's okay I can do that. He's been using the other cup that you showed and it Escapes Me Now what it's called but you know what I'm talking about as it already has a lid but I do like the idea of possibly having two lids so thanks for the video James another tool for the toolbox. Stay Vigilant my friend bad things are coming.
Nice hack! Your vids always get a 👍🏻 from me. I made a lid for mine by taking the lid off of a can using a safety can opener. I just punched two, small holes in the lid and threaded a keyring through them. A possibly even better option, however, takes zero time or effort to make. If you look at Walmart, usually right next to those stainless cups, they also sell these red, collapsible silicon cups. I found that if you leave one of those collapsed, turn it upside down and press it around the rim of the stainless cup it pretty much 'snaps' on and will stay. I wouldn't put it directly in a fire but silicon can hold up to some pretty good temps and I have poured scalding hot water - too hot to drink right away - into those cups to make cocoa, etc. and had no.problem. of course that style lid doesn't have a handle but silicon doesn't hold heat - and you probably could cut strips out of another one of those cups and create low profile handles that could be glued on and would fold out pretty flat against the bottom of the cup if you want to drink out of it. Yet another bonus is that the silicon cups have measurement markings on the inside. So now you would have the stainless cup/small pot with a silicon lid/measuring cup/bowl for eating oatmeal, etc. that you make with the hot water from the stainless cup/pot. I haven't seen anyone else talk about that so either no one has thought of it or there are drawbacks I haven't encountered, yet. Just be careful and don't snap the lid on too tightly.
Love this idea! I've been just using the lid small enough to fit in the cup but wrapping it in tin foil so I can expand the foil when ready to use and leave enough foil on top to pinch into a tab for removing the lid.
You can also look at lids from things like chocolate sticks as they often come in long metal cans with a lid you take off and put back on. Various companies make their cans in different sizes so you may have to take your pot with you to the store, just attach it to your belt when you go shopping.

@@WayPointSurvival you're welcome buddy, it's seriously always a pleasant experience watching your videos!!
A paper towel folded up between them keeps them stowed together snugly and you don't hear the vibrations in the metal when you're driving.
Just what I was looking for! Your creativity/ingenuity is quite consistently amazing accidental or not. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
I love that idea! I have a few of those cups my self. I can store extra items in the cup with the lip. Thanks again with another amazing idea.
Thanks so much!
How big is the cup that you have? Mine measures 5 inches wide. Do you know of a can that big that I can cut it out of?
If it's the standard size then the same kind of can that I used should work. That was a tomato juice can.
@@WayPointSurvival okay great, thank you!
Thank you for the tips, James. Definitely some things to keep in mind!
Got a lidless pot, just what I was wanting! I'll make use of this back.
