  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Dr. Shohini Ghose talks about how the laws of quantum mechanics may be harnessed to develop next generation computers and novel protocols like teleportation.
    Shohini Ghose is an Associate Professor of Physics and Computer Science at
    Wilfrid Laurier University and an Affiliate of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.
    She and her co-workers also made the first-ever movies of cesium atoms that demonstrate how the "butterfly effect" of chaos can impact quantum correlations or 'entanglement'.
    Dr. Ghose was awarded the prestigious Sera Bangali award for her contributions to science and she is also a member of the TED Fellowship for 2014. With much accolades and accomplishments, Dr. Ghose is also the founding Director for Wilfrid Laurier University's Centre for Women in Science which aims to build a diverse community in science through research, action and communication.
    She also recently co-authored the first Canadian undergraduate Introductory Astronomy textbook, which is now being used in several universities in Canada.
    About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    TEDx Talks are given to allow the speaker a public speaking platform to share information that they deem important & that has the potential to inspire an audience & perhaps even move the audience to action. It is about sharing & spreading awesome ideas. I believe that this very successful scientist has accomplished just that. So, Dr. Ghose, thank you for your great contribution to science & the world in which we live. You are: smart, articulate, informative & quite inspiring! Much love, joy & peace to both you & the audience. I also thank God for quantum tunnelling & entanglement.

    This wonderful scientist has pitched her talk for the purpose of bringing greater understanding of her chosen science field to the masses. Those who are criticising that she's too basic or "heard it all before" just want to show off that they have studied at a graduate level and thus turn their nose up at her lecture. Just jealous that she's made such an eloquent speech that covers in broad terms a vast subject in 15 minutes. If you can do the same point me in the way of your Ted Talk please otherwise ssshhhhh!!

    • @m2pozad
      @m2pozad 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Sunny Girl Where she calls home could not be more irrelevant. More relevant is, she is yet another physicist politicizing science. The historically timid female is explained by a current day political 'you-go-girl' female as having become quantum tunnelers of male chauvinism.

    • @m2pozad
      @m2pozad 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Sunny Girl We must all be in support throttling endless politicization, especially of science.
      In Girl-world, there are no barriers. We get it. Just as there are no barriers in Quantum World, as presented here. In the real world however, female timidity constructed its own boundaries, for reasons of the time, which cannot be clearly revisited.
      As for me, I support female acknowledgement of their timidity having been a determining factor in limiting their roles of historic merit, rather than faulting Harvard (or a patriarchy fairy tale) for not readily knowing what to do with the only female physicist it had ever seen.
      So yes, women's boundaries unwittingly came with barriers, which, the more lesbionic of women would eventually violently attack. While shaming women out of their homes. Progress...?

    • @m2pozad
      @m2pozad 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Sunny Girl The Stay at Home moms vs. Working moms battle continues. Only it is complex, with both poor mothers and rich mothers being able to stay at home. For example- Good looking women with advanced degrees, who marry big money husbands have no shame being 'housewives', because they have transcended the maligned traditional family, of powerlessness and being second class, the labels feminists used in the 70's to disconnect women from husbands, in favor of workplace bosses. Chief lesbionic of the time... Gloria Steinem and Ms. Magazine. Then came Oprah... not married, no kids, billionaire. Bye-bye white nuclear family, family neighborhoods and any sense of cohesive American culture. All possible through the suggestibility of timid, hetero, white women. And don't forget about Metoo. More endless timidity, in shame based silence. Female timidity is the enemy. Own it. It can be dealt with. Ah, the future feels brighter already! Quantum timidity, might explain it all.

    A lot of mindless negative comment here but this is a really good video. In just fifteen minutes it gives a really broad overview of why quantum mechanics is such a big deal and a little bit of astrophysics! The talk is probably aimed at high school students or people without any background in advance physics. It's a pity she didn't talk more about her work with cesium atoms (probably she didn't want to get too technical). And it's perfectly alright for her to talk about Cecilia Payne Gaposchkin (I find it baffling that she isn't held in the same high regard as (say) Marie Curie by the general public!). Moreover, it's her talk and she is free to talk about what motivated her as a student. And she barely spent one minute talk about it. There's no need to dismiss her as a feminist!

    I enjoyed the 1st part of this well presented seminar. But I’m very confused about what the moving colours on the sphere represent. When the sphere is 1st introduced, the varying colour is explained as representing the varying probability of the position of the shadow of an atom in laser light, somehow projected on the surface of a sphere. The probability varies in position and in time, and passes through some barrier. Then the varying colour is re-explained as a moving atom tunnelling through a barrier. It can not be both a time varying probability of position and a moving atom. And a barrier which is no barrier, is no barrier. And, for example, shadows of objects can pass through each other as the objects pass by each other. Dr. Shohini Ghose, what, exactly, is the varying colour?

    Universe very generously has left us clues all around us and we humans get to be nature's detectives...by Dr. Shohine Ghose, the quantum physicist......what an expression!! I love it. ..Bmk

    absorption lines. Brian Cox had a beautiful documentary about this. Very nice to hear about this first acknowledged female astronomer. It's important that we celebrate such people.
    Would quantum entanglement allow for FTL communication and travel?

      Because they are female?
      Quantum entanglement does not allow FTL information transmission unless you can move the entangled particles/medium at FTL. Contray to popular myth, entanglement does not magically change properties at a distance.

    I don't get some of the comments. Firstly some guys say I love her or she has beautiful hair. Other guys criticise her for not making the talk so complicated the ordinary woman or man can understand it. SomeTed talks are just there to pass information to the members of the general public like myself. It doesn't have to be rocket science to be interesting. I have a better understanding of quantum physics than I did before a he spoke. Thank you.

    can't help think though that quantum superposition manifests the now which is reconciled to the universe and causality through quantum entanglement.

    Laws of physics that governed our computational power to think and react to some input are very much outcome from the quantum world. Wholly understanding of the quantum world is the key to the future AI.

    interesting talk , do you think we will destroy ourselves without finding answers, don't you think we need to be more connected on a peaceful level before we mess with quantum physics? we can't even share what we have, love the ideas here, but the human condition needs to be our priority

    Barriers is between E = ch/L = h*f of QM and ch = c*(m*c*L) = g*(2.67*10^-8)^2 of GR.
