Roadtripping My 964 Porsche Across Japan To Begin The Build!

- It's time to get the ball rolling with Project 964!!
On this episode I got busy with the handling side of things, teaming up with Hashimoto Corporation, KW Suspension and Yokohama Rubber to literally transform the 911's handling. It was a pleasure to watch the guys at Hashimoto fit the KW Variant 3 coilover kit, replacing the tired stock dampers which are 31 years old and have covered 180,000 km (112k miles).
For this first lineup of modifications I decided to stick with the stock wheels and just run modern day rubber, my favorite street and sports tire - the Yokohama Advan Neova AD09. I run the same rubber on the R34 GT-R too and oh boy did it revitalize the 964's handling and feel through the steering and seat of your pants. It was certainly a massive change from the 13 year old tires that the car came on!
Kyoto and the surrounding Shiga-ken hills were simply and amazing backdrop for us to immortalise the 964 in its simple, stock-ish, narrow body guise and put the car through some nice touge roads. Have a look at the video and let me know what you thought!

I like how they oriented the yellow dot on the tire to the valve stem hole. A lot of people don’t know that you have to do that for balance. A lot of tire shops don’t know or they don’t care.
as far as i know it marks the lightest part of the tyre, heaviest part of the rim is not neccessarily the stem
My instructor told me it's never the most accurate part to rely on the dot on the tire for balancing as some tires have both red and yellow dot markings. It's a good reference when you have to rotate the tires though if the balance is out of wack and you gotta rotate it 180 degrees
@@kyvenchan no tyre is perfectly round, so if i remember correctly red dots mark the physically highest point of the tyre

On my v3 I found that 2 clicks on compresión and rebound from full soft have gave me the best ride comfort. Kw doesn’t recommend maxing out full soft or full stiff

It’s nice to see your 964 again in your channel. Speaking of upgrades, you mention before that converting your 964 to a manual transmission is part of your plan so I wonder if you have any idea how much the manual transmission costs? Speaking of KW coilovers, does KW already have a coilovers for some of the Japanese sports cars like the older Nissan Skyline GTR’s, older Honda Civic and Integra Type R and others. Also, about the ST coilovers do you have any opinion on them since it has the same KW tech on it? Nice content as always.
Yes KW does a big lineup of products for our favourite JDM cars, both KW & ST. I’ve not had a chance to drive a car with STs so can’t comment. As for the manual swap, it’s pretty expensive, depends on the transmission you find, new or used parts and who will do the labour part of it
Amazing video. The 964 looks pretty nice, are you planning to work on the KWs to reduce the hardness at low speeds or it's you can live without too much fuss?

I don't understand tyre reviews... friends of mine just bought a set of Yokohamas AD08RS (the predecessor to these AD09) and say that, in the wet, you need to be carefull as there isn't a lot of grip. Dino says he's happy with the AD09 in the wet. I need to buy a set of these to make my opinion.
Yeah they are good in the wet for a sport tyre, most importantly of all progressive when they let go
