Miklos Rozsa's magnum opus among his film scores NEVER GETS OLD. He had a year to compose it, he added more research to the research he'd done for QUO VADIS, and he came out with a miraculous rendering of Biblical / Roman times--as close as he could get to the sound. That was some doing, since no Roman music of that time has survived, but Greek music has, and it's thought that Rome carried on the Greek music tradition. And then there's Hebrew / Middle Eastern music, which also contributed to Rozsa's concepts of the various themes in the score. This is one of the all-time great film scores as well as a great work of symphonic music, period. So bravo to Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic for this NEW high-density recording of the complete score!

Imagine being in the audience at a first-run theater showing of this epic. Before this night you've only ever heard mono optical soundtracks, or the tiny speaker on your phonograph or radio. The lights dim, and this overture emerges from the darkness in multichannel magnetic high fidelity sound. And the curtain hasn't even opened on the wall-to-wall high resolution picture yet. I've spoken to older folks who still remember being blown away by the experience.
I saw this in Chicago when I was 13. I talked 3 of my friends into going which wasn"t hard since we all loved the music and played the soundtrack continuously on my Webcor phonograph. I still remember the chills that went down my spine in the exact scene you describe, when the lights went down and the music started.
Count me as one of those "older folk". The opening "blast" of the music over the Main Titles still thrills! Thank Goodness for the mircales of DVD and CD to keep that alive.
Ah yes, I remember it well. I was a teenager when I saw this movie in New York City soon after its release. I had never heard such a sound before. To this day I still get goose bumps when I hear that soaring love theme.
My composition teacher at UCLA in the '60s (Boris Kremenliev) had many amusing stories to tell about his advising of Rosza on the music of the Ben Hur Score. It is nothing more than an extension of early medieval music (lots of parallel fourths and fifths) but with a lot of Romanticism. But oh this music is so music more than the sum of the parts. Truly a work of genius. Watch a Rosza interview here on TH-cam. He is as engaging in conversation as he is in music. Fluent in many languages and a wonderful friend, husband, and father. A man for the ages.
I was a great honour for me to not only know Dr Rozsa as a personal friend, but also to record his music for my Entr'acte Recording Society record label. First few parts gave me the feeling of how mighty and cruel Rome was then it took me to its countless victims and broken spirits . Then as it went on something not of this World something divine something strong and mightier than Rome. And Love that knows no bounds came in.
Nic Raine outdid himself this time. I have a few new recordings from him but "Ben-Hur" is the best one by far! Amazing re-recording and incredible masterpiece, the most impressive of all time.

The producer and some of his staff are English. Conductor Nic Raine now lives in Germany but has worked around the world. It is an international operation.
QUESTION: The video mentions “score reconstruction” at the beginning. Is Rozsa’s original lost or was it destroyed? Just very curious here. Rozsa certainly deserved the Oscar he won for Ben Hur.
Full score and parts were discarded by MGM without so much as an offer to the composers or libraries. The music had to be reconstructed from the composer's sketches and the simplified "conductor score" that was submitted for copyrighting.

My favorite movie.
My composition teacher at UCLA in the '60s (Boris Kremenliev) had many amusing stories to tell about his advising of Rosza on the music of the Ben Hur Score. It is nothing more than an extension of early medieval music (lots of parallel fourths and fifths) but with a lot of Romanticism. But oh this music is so music more than the sum of the parts. Truly a work of genius. Watch a Rosza interview here on TH-cam. He is as engaging in conversation as he is in music. Fluent in many languages and a wonderful friend, husband, and father. A man for the ages.
My favorite film composer.
I was a great honour for me to not only know Dr Rozsa as a personal friend, but also to record his music for my Entr'acte Recording Society record label. I treasure our many lunch and dinner dates over time. Dr Rozsa was a brilliant raconteur, rent with many amusing stories about working in Hollywood and knowing other famous composers. #JohnStevenLasher.
This music makes me cry as it touches me very deep since the first time I saw the movie and I am 76.
Of all the great composers it was my pleasure to know and to work with Dr Rozsa stands at the head of the class. He was not only a gentleman, but also a brilliant composer. #JohnStevenLasher.

This haunting music evokes all of the emotions that I felt the first time I saw the movie soon after its release. Seldom, if ever, has a theme, the performances, and a score so perfectly come together.

Nic Raine outdid himself this time. I have a few new recordings from him but "Ben-Hur" is the best one by far! Amazing re-recording and incredible masterpiece, the most impressive of all time.

Maybe someone can clarify something for me. This is the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra located in the City of Prague, Czechia then why is there so many shirts, and especially signs on the walls of the studio in English. For being in Czechia I am surprised to see so many things in English.

The producer and some of his staff are English. Conductor Nic Raine now lives in Germany but has worked around the world. It is an international operation.

QUESTION: The video mentions “score reconstruction” at the beginning. Is Rozsa’s original lost or was it destroyed? Just very curious here. Rozsa certainly deserved the Oscar he won for Ben Hur.
Full score and parts were discarded by MGM without so much as an offer to the composers or libraries. The music had to be reconstructed from the composer's sketches and the simplified "conductor score" that was submitted for copyrighting.
I saw the movie in theater in 1988..with the 60mm format it was like time travel

como siempre cagandola este Nic Raine con su maldito tempo lento o descoordinado o mas rapido en partes. Hizo lo mismo con Quo Vadis. Mal arreglista y director. La banda sonora se debe seguir igual que la del compositor (sobre todo con Rozsa). Mediocre.

This film towers above it's contemporary releases due in main part to William Wyler,, However when the Magna 70mm curtains pull back it;s one mans game =====Rosa . Words fail me with each hearing of this glorious score. Thank you for what you gave the world -a treasure..
