He is looking for darker patches on the water, wich means higher pressure(gusts), you can use these to speed up and when you are going upwind you can luft up in a gust. These gusts are often what cause less experienced sailors to capsize because of the sudden increase in pressure. A good sailor will always see these coming and it is good to constantly be looking out for them because 1 good gust can change if you win or lose a race.
I know a club that has a division just for lasers you bought for under 1K AUS (S#$@t-box Laser Class). Mine was $180 ready to sail!!! (No it is not the greatest / most beautiful laser on the planet, but hey!)
