    What do you guys think about the Persona 3 Portable port? Is it the new way to play? Or would you rather stick to the PS2 version?

    My ideal version of the game is still the fusion of FES and P3P's additional features, like you mentioned at the start of the video. FES is still personally my definitive edition so far that has come out to date. Rumor has it that a remake of 3 is coming down the pipeline, so that fusion may still be a thing!

    After loving P5, I picked up P3 and P4 last week. Started with P3 and am loving it so far. The visual novel style does make the world feel less immersive, though. If you treat it like a great dungeon crawler with a Persona wrapper, it shines.

    I've never played Persona 3 til the re-release on switch. I'm enjoying the game so far, I'm used to the visual novel novelness of it because big fan of Phoenix Wright here. I did look up FES though and I'm in agreement probably should have been that version but still enjoying P3P. Can't wait to finish and then move on to Persona 4 Golden

    I actually think the audio compression is actually worse in this port than the PSP. Nyarly did a comparison between the Awakening scene in the PSP and PC version, and the PC version sounds even more muffled and compressed than the psp version. It's like I have no idea how they managed to make it sound worse than the original, how does that even happen

  • @stupendously_silly
    @stupendously_silly ปีที่แล้ว +3

    If you have access to both then the only reason to play P3P over FES is if you really wanted to play as femc and wanted an easier time getting persona with perfect skill sets. The skill cards in p3p+persona save abuse made the process trivial.
    Despite all the added content + challenges added in P3P I still think FES is still the way to go, just emulate it if you must. That version is literally abandonware at this point or buy the new port and try both.
    I completed both ver with max social links and beaten everything and although Mitsuru spamming marin karin meme on the ps2 ver is famous, the AI is not really that bad as long as you always scan the enemy first. P3P is still better in that aspect but in turn also made the game a lot easier.
    Might be spoiler territory here but its important so I'll make this as vague as possible. Trying to beat the super boss on new game plus on the psp version of p3p is a lot more grindier than the 1st run if you obtained the fusion cards from challenges before you start the 2nd run because they don't carry over to new game plus. You will need them to beat the super boss, there is no way around it.
    I seen people that beaten the challenges on 1st run but never fought the super boss and by the time they're on second run they realized they had messed up because they lost the fusion cards and had to do massive grinds to get them back.
    This is not an issue on the ps2 version because fusion are persona skills there instead of consumables. Consumables can't be carried over to new game plus. Hopefully it is fixed in this version.
    If you wanted to beat the challenges and super boss. Do it in a single playthrough to be safe.

    I totally agree with you! Persona 3 FES may have The Answer, but it's really not something that can further improve the MC's story.
    His story was already done in the main game. And so, Persona 3 Portable is the better version imo.
    Shifting the life sim gameplay to a point-and-click style was actually a good thing. Less loading time and quick traversals.
    Not to mention the FEMC experience and the improved battle gameplay.
    The only thing that it's really missing were the anime cutscenes. The content of the cutscenes were still there in P3P, but in visual novel format.

    • @MooeysAura
      @MooeysAura ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know if Portable has "improved" gameplay it's pretty much just P4 and FES and Portable have more differences in gameplay than just party control, FES has stun locking since enemies and party members have to waste a turn standing up after being knocked down. So it's more of a preference thing

  • @Koby411
    @Koby411 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Personally I feel like Persona 3 FES fan modded with full party control and HD remaster pack is superior to the Portable version as it's got actual movement outside dungeons and actual cutscenes rather than just being a visual novel.

    For me it’s not just the missing stuff for portable, FES was balanced IF you actually changed your Allie’s commands like Mitsuru to offense or Yukari to healing and fusion spells /knockdowns were used tactfully and always available. Now we have the 4 engine for knockdowns making some bosses worse while fusion spells are forever stuck as an item. Combined with everything else lost even if we ignore the answe it’s just a downgrade long term. Still have to do FEMC social links but what I’ve seen of moons ending….

  • @rayjohnson863
    @rayjohnson863 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I prefer Persona 3 FES over P3P. I think the answer was a great addition to the story as it allowed the characters to express bow they truly felt about the main character. I don't think the game was adding social links in this regard. I won't say anything more of the expanded part of FES as it is heavy spoiler territory.

I especially notice with the 'S' sounds as you mentioned. Even in P5, voicework isn't the highest fidelity. For those who wants to have an easier time getting into Persona 3 for the first time, I’d say this port is the way to go. But for those who want to play a more immersive and high production quality version, then modded FES is the way to go. It’s a shame Atlus didn’t add the animated cutscenes into the port, now that it’s not held back by the PSP anymore.

    I played through P3 FES when it first came out and absolutely loved it. People forget that at the time, JRPGs were really stuck. Many Japanese devs hadn't accommodated to HD displays and games were becoming gray, bleak, and real-time. P3 was a river in a desert to the parched JRPG fans in the west. It's a game I don't think I could go back to though. It has its flaws and now there's plenty of sweet JRPG juice to drink. I'm probably best sticking with the sweet memory of FES.

    On the one hand, we finally get my favorite of the modern Persona games with a soild cast and improvement of the gameplay back but on the other hand, personality I would have either wanted a version of FES but WITH the ability to control my party members like the PSP version or a from the ground up remake of this game. Plus, it REALLY does make P3 feel so out of place when compared to Golden and Royal, especially Golden since that was out on a portable system that was able to give us a world to run around in. Overall, if the rumors of a remake of 3 are true, then I would rather take my chances with that but if you REALLY want to play P3 then go ahead by all means. The only downside for FES imo is that you cannot control your party members directly like in portable. Then again, both FES and Portable have it's pros and Cons. While i think this game is probably worth playing no matter the version, it's kinda sad to see they went the easy way and didn't try to make the final version everyone was expecting : a version mixing P3P with the 3d environments.
    I know, they weren't that fantastic, but i'll take it over the FULL visual novel format, which takes a little bit away from the immersion.
    Honnestly having tested all versions before this rerelease, my best time was with Persona 3 FES on emulation where inputing a simple cheat in the emulator enables party member control like it's a official feature.

    I don't think the "perfect blend" between persona 3 portable and FES would or could have ever existed, just because of the vastly different technical nature of each game. However I do think they could have done significantly more with this port, including manual skill inheritance with personas (nocturne HD added that in a patch) as well as something like a "new mode" which replaces the VN cutscenes with their respective FES anime cutscenes, they could have done that at the very least. Heck, even fans got the FES models in the PSP version through an emulator so Atlus really had no excuse for this re-release being as lazy as it was, really disappointed :(

    My feelings on this may be controversial to some. But if I had to be honest, I was happy to hear they were bringing it as P3P way back when it was announced. I don't miss the Answer personally and even then, with playing as a girl being a factor, they would either have to figure out how that works... Or just ignore her character. Heck, even PQ2 shows how both leads can be canon.
    I remember way back when people were saying that Shinj should be the main character of the girl's post story. But what you said in this video proves why it can't happen. The Answer doesn't follow character developments and Social Links. No spoilers for people who don't know, but for those that do, it shows why this can't happen considering what happens storywise without getting Shinji's Social Link.
    The only way around this world be when starting the Answer, you get the ability to transfer your game file so it can react accordingly.
    Now I know what I am about to say next is definitely in the minority. But I don't mind it seeming more like a visual novel either. It's a bummer to lose the animated cutscenes, but I can look passed it. Especially since I preferred seeing an explanation to what we do at the final fight compared to seeing it. Don't get me wrong, the cutscene in and of itself is very impactful. But the added explanation to show why it happens... I feel like it resonates better with me. Ideally if there was a way to show both then that would be my perfect way to show it!
    Now it is a little sad we don't get the better audio. But I can look passed this too. Mostly because it could be a lot worse... And I have heard worse!
    I wouldn't say it's perfect... But from what I knew, it met my expectations and that's all that matters. It's like you say, hype responsibly. I would say that if any of the changes bother them to just stick with FES. But if you are going to get P3P, it might be better to get the remaster.

    If you've never played persona 3, absolutely not. If you have played persona 3, still no. Quality of life improvements only make sense in games known for their gameplay. Persona 3 isn't known for its gameplay, it's known for its story. Tone, ambience, interactions, cutscenes etc. All these things are crucial to the persona 3 story. Without them the game becomes a generic dungeon crawler with a butchered story experience.

      Persona is known for its combat. And the story is still there. Social links are still there. The only real difference is how you move around the world. The cutscenes are a horrible loss tho.

      Agreed. I don't know about you guys, but this version feels dry in a way. Don't get me wrong, the game is still good. I like it. But after a few minutes, you wanna stop. But the absence of the cutscenes... Just damn. I would low key call this game "Persona 3 Portable: Ace Attorney"

      Nah, portable is better. It’s SMT, meaning it’s always been about gameplay. The story is still there, and the cutscenes weren’t that great anyways.

      I disagree. Getting fatigued on Tartarus mostly slows the overall experience, rather than enhance it, especially on the lower difficulties.

    the fact that people speculate about a remake says a lot... the p3p is kind of a mess for me- persona 3 fes you can buy for your ps3 for like 10 dollar- much better!

      It does. A remake has been my dream for years now. And that dream still lives on. This can hold us over for now, but it's just a stop-gap. We _need_ something better.

    I can't wait to dive into this! P3 has been on top of my to play list for a long time but I have yet to give it a shot. The time is nigh!

      Enjoy! It's a solid experience, and the new port is a solid _contender_ for the top spot.

      @@SuperDerek yeah I’m excited! I’m going to start it right after I finish Trails from Zero. So much JRPG goodness on the horizon!

    Honestly the p3p port is no different to p3p on emulator 10 years ago. It is a low effort port and just not worth it.

    Fes is the best, and it's a disappointment they didn't remaster it. This portable version is pointless, it's like half the game. I'm happy about P4G though.

    P3P is absolutely the definitive version in my mind. I’m with Derek on The Answer… was not a fan at all. The pre-rendered cutscenes are nice though; shame to lose them, but hardly a dealbreaker. Plus, alternate version of the story to replay on P3P. And if you liked the AI party, the option’s still there.
    I don’t understand why people have a problem with the 2D overworld though. I prefer it actually; reminds me of mainline SMT where all the overworlds are the “drag a pointer” across a map style. But make no mistake. I still think we could have gotten a proper remaster that contains the best of both and a decent sound mix on the music- of course then they’d charge $60 for it because well, Atlus. Love’em, but yeah… Atlus.
