It's complicated. I knew a girl from church who always borrowed money from me at the end of the month. After a few months I made a menu and grocery list. I went to the store with her and we went back to my house to meal prep. There were issues in the store when I said "you can't afford that." It was initially disappointing to her but she was open and at the end of the month she was running around telling everyone she still had money on her card. I told her to reward herself with a frozen pizza and she relished it as the treat it should be. Not everyone is that open. Not everyone has a working kitchen or transportation.
Frozen, dry, prepared, canned food are food, but candy, soda, etc. is not food. If the food can be found at a food pantry, I would consider it to be food.
It’s a delicacy. If you can’t afford food, you shouldn’t get to buy lobster, soda pop, alcohol. It’s for pasta, bread, dairy, THINGS NEEDED TO SURVIVE. We shouldn’t be funding somebody else’s grocery cart when it’s full of items not essential to live
@ Please don’t try to claim people drink soda because its cheap. Water is better and cheaper. The highly processed foods SNAP recipients consume is not cheaper than vegetables and fruit.
You can buy mc Donald's, carls jr, burger King, Amazon now accepts EBT. Food stamps is for food, not snacks and junk food. I'm so glad this is happening
Actually, EBT can only be used at restaurants in select states. Bear in mind too, that not all snacks are "junk" food per se. So, banning items that contain ANY amount of sugar, salt, etc. won't be as straightforward as others here are making it out to be.
@@RCenal I don't know if you've ever eaten there but fast food isn't necessarily processed food. Take for example burger king... If you order a whopper you're going to get the following: Bun, Hamburger meat, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Pickle, Ketchup, Mayo. The only thing in this menu item that has the potential for 'processing' is the bun but if you look at the ingredients for the bun, it really isn't that bad and isn't any worse than a bun that can be purchased at a grocery store. It's the same thing with Taco bell or Mcdonald's.
90% of the time they're going to the gas station paying 3-6X what they Cost at a grocery store too. You have to have a job to receive SNAP in my state. I don’t think that people should be able to buy soda, but I also know for a fact that most on snap are underemployed, not just living off of SNAP. The government doesn’t want poor people to be healthy. If they did, they would’ve removed these items from the list years ago and lowered the cost of bottled water
Nobody says you can’t buy soda. It’s the fact that you shouldn’t be using government money to buy junk when you’re supposed to be eating food to survive not luxury. Supplemental nutrition assistance program. It’s in the name. There is no nutrition and soda and if you want junk, then buy it with their own hard earned money not the taxpayers.
True, but then how should the USDA distinguish between what's "junk" and other sugary edibles that also benefit our health in other ways like dark chocolate (which is rich in antioxidants), juice (alleged to boost immune systems via high vitamin C), milk (containing large amounts of calcium for bone health), etc.? Do they simply stipulate a list of 'exceptions' based on some perceived, overriding health benefit? How would the individual states code their EBT cards to know the difference? And how much would these updates cost us as taxpayers? These are only some concerns that need to be addressed before any policy changes are actually enacted (and who knows how long it would take to accomplish as well). Maybe the most straightforward option would just be to get the USDA to regulate sugar content; Because unlike a SNAP list update, this doesn't require an upfront down payment (In fact, revenue could be made and saved via fines should companies fail to comply) and everyone's health would improve regardless of income level with reduced sugar and increased prices on junk. In reality, the only people upset about this approach would be the execs/members of the American Sugar Alliance, who stand to lose up to 50% of their gluttonous profits (assuming they churn a certain dollar amount for every gram of sugar they shove down our throats on a daily basis). So, in principle, I agree. But execution is everything here.

I wonder if candy, chips and other junk food will be next. All those are unhealthy and expensive. While we're at it, add photos to the EBT card that should match an ID
I 100% agree sugary drinks and snacks should be banned with snap. However, the healthy foods cost so much that a person cannot actually buy enough food to sustain themselves. Junk food however, is so cheap, it can feed a person for much longer. Healthy food prices need to come down at the same time junk food is banned in order to offset the cost. Some people only have snap to eat with. They are elderly or disabled and have no other income. Snap benefits will not buy enough healthy food to last a month at the current prices.
@@bluedarkness7125 no junk food isn't cheaper. Anybody that says junk food is cheap doesn't know how to shop economically. A can of Chef Boyardee can be had for $0.80 if purchased in bulk. That's real food and it's a full meal.
I would say modify the quantity someone get of "junk food," such as soda. I wouldn't get rid of it completel, but limiting it to the quantity of of something is better than letting people not have the option. Real meat cost more, and buying frozen veggies are more cost efficient. Even with my money, it cost money to go to the store and get fresh vegetables and fruits vs if I know I won't be able to go to the store in a while, frozen is the way to go.

I don't get food stamps-wish I did. But to control what someone eats or drinks should be up to the person-not the government. For some, this is all they can afford. I don't buy soda myself, but the juice I buy is expensive....and we all know that. It's the homeless or unsheltered people that this will affect because they don't have places to store food or drinks that will be healthy for them. They have to buy food on the spot and already made. Those of us with a home have no understanding and pick and choose when the government should police- usually the less fortunate. Folks are okay with that part, just don't tell them what to do.

@ I just wanna say upfront that the point of my post is not to defend EBT being used for sugary pops is merely a response to the overall tone of this comment section, which seems to be that anybody on EBT is a person that doesn’t work. I’ll take myself as an example.last year. I was employed, but I was what I would consider underemployed because I was working a very low paying job so I qualified for EBT, but I also own a home so I was still required to pay property tax, and I did pay some percentage of my income in taxes that year. ( though much less than I would have a t a higher tax bracket)Now, if I had a child or something, I would’ve gotten a tax credit, but I don’t and I’m single so I got no such credit.
Excellent argument against communism.
Any drink besides water is a treat. SNAP is for people who need assistance to get by and survive. If it hurts feelings that you can’t just have whatever you want when someone else is providing it then that’s just to bad. We are all to entitled in this country to think we deserve treats with every meal. Say thank you that you live in a country that doesn’t let you starve. Soda is not a necessity.
But milk is important since someone I know lack of Vitamin D that found in milk or sunlight. Winter when sunlight is limited is no joke. And dark chocolate have good immune defenses support and boost brain activity. I like to have dark chocolate milk, warning it taste bitter since I do not used any sugar.

You guys are pissed off about food stamps existing in general so your big idea was to attempt to take soda off the list?? Groundbreaking stuff man but yeah like I said, what I would do if I were you is be pissed at the government that are in full control of this system, messing with the poor for accepting free money that was given them by the government that stole it from you has never been a good look 🤡
Where is the nutrition in soda? Absolutely should not be on SNAP including diet soda. So much obesity and diabetes from high fructose corn syrup. If they want soda they can pay for it. Ridiculous for the government to pay for something that is damaging health.

Well, it should cover more than bread, pasta and dairy…

That's a far better use for EBT than candy and soda provided they don't buy Candy and Soda at the restaurants.
Actually, EBT can only be used at restaurants in select states. Bear in mind too, that not all snacks are "junk" food per se. So, banning items that contain ANY amount of sugar, salt, etc. won't be as straightforward as others here are making it out to be.
I must have missed that
What the hell

Fast food processed joints
If you're on food stamps as I have been more than one you need to be buying items of substance, not empty calories because you have zero impulse control. Want sweet? exactly. feels like EBT cards enable the worst habits because it can be used basically anywhere.
I was once considered low income. Now I make enough money to where I don’t need help from the government. I’m proud I can provide for myself. Do everything you can to succeed people. Dont be on the bottom. Fight for top!!!! You can do it!!
