AF1's have one of the shortest axle to axle wheelbase of any truck out there. This shorter axle WB is what gives it a "lighter" feeling due to the increased leverage at the tail/nose.
Best truck in my personal opinion! Turn on a dime an there the only trucks that are loose straight out the box! For my type of skating they work simply because there so responsive an quick! Street skaters usually don’t like these trucks because they make it a bit harder to do tricks but I don’t skate street so I don’t have that problem
I am a big, tall dude. The bushing weren't for me. Instant wheel bite. I changed them out. Now they are great trucks. I love the simple clean look. Air Force 1 (AF1's) are an improvement over the originals. The originals are still solid. I believe they are still made in the USA. Whereas Independent are now made in China. I am Canadian, but I trust the "Made in America" truck over the former No.1.
I got worse pop than on indys11 and not a tighter turn, its just deeper due to the longer kingpin and higher bushings as for my experience. I am not very good, mainly skating miniramp or small Bowls and bend the classics 55, 66 and af1 60 with just 75kg. That just made me super sad, although i like the deepnes of the turn.
some tricks that i think would be sick are - hardflip bs smith, pressureflip bs noseslide, pressureflip bs crook, impossible fs blunt, impossible fs noseblunt
I set up a new pair of Indys 159''s standard Hollows a size of Indys I don't ride as much for this 8.9 Creature Egg W short wheelbase and short length. because it tapers in over the trucks. I modified the bushings tho, I left the bottom one standard the orange bushings, and changed the top bushing to a hard black Indy bushing. Board rides amazing. The Change to the bushings helped my pop because Im riding some 58mm Spitifire Conical Fulls that are 80dur soft but with hardcore inside, makes it so you can pop easier with soft wheels in a crusty area. I only skate crusty spots. I dont like smooth surfaces lol.
i switched my top bushings in 2 sets of indys to mini logo hard(red), one set has the stock(orange) bottoms, the other has the hard(black) indy bottoms. i like med/tight and i'm 6'3, 225
I’ve been on Thunder hollow lights for a while and don’t think I can go back to anything else. Even the 151’s are so light they made riding a 9” egg feel like an 8” I tried to go back to Ace but the geometry on thunders seem to work much better for me.
Thunder hollow lights used to be my jam until I got used to the wide turn of Indy, Slappy & Ace trucks lol My back tails have been working a lot better too since the axles of these trucks sit further to the centre of the baseplate so theres more wheel clearance when sliding but I wouldn't mind trying some Thunder's again soon 🤔
@@LeonPaxton yeah I was a big Thunder fan when I was younger and that was pretty much all I rode but right after I started skating again the AF1 was coming out and I hopped on the hype train right away. Still love the way they turn and everything but I notice my flip tricks take a hit because of how surfy they are. Thunders gave me that stability back and I like that they’re lower and lighter, definitely helps skate longer when your board isn’t a tank. Keep ripping, dude! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the 93’s too 👊
Yeah I can see that, my already sloppy flip trucks have become a bit more sloppy with these looser trucks 😅 Damn, you're kind of making me want to get a set of Thunders again 😂 Thanks dude! I'm definitely keen to try them but it might be a while before we get them over here in Aus lol
Tailslides and noseslides go really well with: ventures they stick out the most? Also k grinds feel even better as with thunders. Wide stable turn also great for manuals and flipping worth a trie
Just 2 days ago I ordered a pair of Ace 77 AF1 hollows that will be going onto the Heroin Anatomy of a Wide Boy 10.4” deck in the same order. I skate Powell Nano Cubics and Snot Wide Boys, so either or will stick out past the axle and the 9.5” trucks will fit well under the 10.4” egg. 🎉
I could see light trucks being good for big boards. For anything 8.5 and below I generally like standards. Really light boards always feel like flimsy toys to me.
My highest ollies were on my lightest setup: Element Featherlight deck, Spitfire Firelighters wheels… After that, I preferred a more robust setup: Independent Standard trucks, 7-ply or even 8 plies maple decks. Now with a wider board, I remove weight with lighter trucks: I have hollow and titanium trucks.
I love ace af1 trucks! I find it takes me 2 to 3 weeks worth of skating for the bushings to break in and firm up nicely. I just setup a fresh set of AF1 80 on a Heroin Anatomy of a WideBoy (10.4”) deck a week ago and the bushings are already starting to firm up a bit.. super fun setup!
I love Hollow Trucks. when I skate for tricks, or any bigger setup of mine has hollows. Ill only ride "standards" that are 8.5 and up if they are "Ventures", I ride Only "Hollow Independent" trucks tho. idk why. I cant skate a pair of standard Indys, the weight is to much, for me. I have a pair of ACE AF1s but they are 33's for a 8.0 inch set up. when I ride a 8.0 my trucks are always Solid axel Solid Kingpin. only way I feel Stable. I like the turn on the AF1 standard, but its Pop feel isn't for me. Because of the weight. Even tho I skate Ventures 5.2 that are pretty similar weight as the ACE af1 33. How do you like the weight of those ACE AF1s HOLLOWS VS. INDY 169'' Hollows and VS. Slappy Hollows 9.0 out of the three which do you prefer? seems like you skated those Slappy trucks and liked them.
True, that makes sense! It's hard to compare these to the Indy Forged Hollows because it's been a while since I've ridden them but I'm looking at trying the Slappy Hollows next so I can do a direct comparison from the AF1 Hollows to the Slappy Hollows for sure 👌🏼 Yeah I don't want to give too much away before i do my comparison video but those Slappy trucks really are so good lol
@@LeonPaxton slappy is the only trucks I need to try still. Indy has my heart lol tho. Especially because I did some consulting for them last year. And they sent me some free trucks. But ventures the 8.75 is definitely 💯
Another great video! That park looks so fun. I've ridden the classics, af1, and af1 hollows. I really love the af1 hollows. I've got the 77s on my 10in pop. It's a blast. I'm really curious about the slappy lites (forged hollows) that are coming out later this season. Supposedly even lighter than their regular hollows. It'd be sweet if you included those in the comparison video. I'm pretty interested in Slappy for the reduced wheelbite and I could always use a weight reduction on my setup.
Thanks so much dude! Yeah I'm actually keeping my eyes on the Slappy Lights as well, trying to decide if I should go with those or the hollows 🤔 The Slappy ST1's were amazing though so I'd love for the trucks to be exactly the same as those but lighter 👌🏼
Got ace hard bushings and it was still too loose. Now I’m having mini-logo 100 hard bushings and really enjoy the more controlled roll to precision stuff such as box grinds. Also manuals seem to be cleaner with harder bushings. I’m on the classic 44s though. Using it as secondary setup, weight is not issue when with mellow kicks deck and more f.o.f.
Haah! :D I don't know, honestly it's a personal preference. You look way heavier than me so in theory you might ask for harder bushings. I mean ace hard bushings still made me wheelbite and I've met another skater here that did the same thing, added hard bushings (he picked bones). So I felt that tuning the tightnes did not change much with ace hards and I didnt want them to explode (and I could not wait for them to turn harder since then I'd actually get used to them and trick my brain). Too loose truck lets me land not full 180-s and think that I did 180 - resulting loss of speed and looking too wobly. @@LeonPaxton
I’m on af1 hollow 44 on 8.25 and it’s awesome going back down to 8.1 soon with 44. They are still a tad heavy tho compared to thunder and venture hollow. But the pop of ace is just nice. It feels easier than other brands.
Thanks dude! These actually felt better than the Indy Forged Hollows initially. I remember it taking a lot longer for those to wear in and start feeling comfortable compared to these Ace's so definitely a big positive for the AF1's
You should try the ace hard bushings. The stock bushings are great for crusing and bowls but they give to much wheel bite with street skating. The hard trucks don't mess with the turn they are just more forgiving.
i've not tried aces. there is def a point where trucks become too light, but i could see the benefit of a lighter truck in wider widths or longer wheelbases. most of my trucks are 8" or 8.25" and i tend to prefer standard weight indy or ventures. the 139 indy forged hollows are nice but on the brink of too light, the 148 thunder forged hollows are too light, for me anyway. i got some slappy bs feebles trying to bs 50/50 axle stall
Got Tensor Maglights that are around 270g each. It made my legs less tired in my late 30s and my sessions longer but I couldn't feel my flick properly. Lighter trucks make sense but somehow Venture low V-hollows felt much better although they are around 330g each. Lighter trucks are not necessarily better but heavier trucks are often harder to skate. For such a wide board every gram is too much (you even have the deck rails 😂) but at 8.25 most of trucks are manageable. Btw I'm surprised that you got Aces that made the shorter wheelbase while looking for 15inch wheelbase. You should probably try out Venture High V-hollows to get the longest wheelbase possible from your board.

I think while reading and replying to these comments I've decided that I'm going to get the harder bushings and swap these stock ones out lol They are still feeling a bit too loose so I feel like the slightly harder bushings will make these feel perfect 👌🏼 The only hollow trucks I've had break on me were the Indy Forged Hollows but the broke at the hanger, the hollow axle was still fine which was really weird!

Best trucks by far however the best thing I did with them was put their hard bushings in they say hard but they still soft and eliminate all the problems you had
the Aces also have a very short wheelbase, which makes the pop feel much lighter, than with for example thunders or ventures. thats perhaps why Indys can get away with being so damn heavy. personally I do not feel as much a difference between my heaviest truck (around 375g) and my lightest truck (~305g) as I thought I would. however, the heavier truck is an indy and has a shorter wheelbase, so that may be why and if I had a big deck like yours, I'd probably want to save some weight too.
That's correct. The axle to axle wheelbase is what gives it the feeling of "lightness" as it's easier to pop due to increased leverage. The aces are actually slightly shorter in wheelbase than Stg 11 Indys, which are in turn have a shorter wheelbase than Thunders or Ventures. And being that L. Paxton has been going up in size of decks, the smaller wheelbase of Aces makes it feel more similar to the narrower (lighter) decks that he originally learned to skate on.
Great content Leon! Always a pleasure to watch you skate and battle new tricks. Do you prefer the Slappy trucks over Thunders? I have only ridden Thunders so far and am thinking about trying the Slappy ST1
thanks man, thanks so much for watching! i definitely do prefer Slappy over Thunder but that's just because of the way i like to skate. Thunder trucks are still amazing but it just depends on how you want your set up to perform.
@@LeonPaxton I bought the Slappy ST1 classic 8.75, they are amazing trucks! I love the turn on them and they look awesome! The little added weight (70 grams per truck heavier compared to the Thunder Hollow lights 151) actually gives me more feel and feedback on my ollies and flip tricks. They are now my new favorite trucks for sure. Thank you!
@LeonPaxton how you dig'n the heroin stingy? I recently got an anti hero ten curbmandments and its my favorite non symmetrical board so far. Im riding indy titanium 169's and spitfire full conical 97a 54mm wheels, feels perfect.
I mean there's really no truck out there that grinds as smooth as tensor mags. But as far as all the other truck brands go, Aces are probably the smoothest
The only thing i dont like about the AF-1s is both pairs i had started making this obnoxious popping/clicking noise from the pivot cups after about a month or so. Other than that, great trucks. They do grind down fast though and the bushings will blow out. Only Ace bushings work in Ace trucks.
switching from thunders to ace will make your wheelbase smaller, if you have a 14.6 wth aces would be a similar wheel base to a 14.3 with thunders. thunders and ventures give you the longest wheelbase
Very true! I haven't tried Venture trucks for about 18 years but I used to love Thunder trucks until I got used to the wider turns of Indy, Slappy and Ace trucks lol Also having the hanger sit closer to the middle of the baseplate helps a lot with nose and tail slides 👌🏼
I'd rather have Slappy Hollows, they're like Aces but better. They turn good but don't wheelbite. The pinch is better. They're more stable. The grind clearance is amazing. I have new sets of Aces sitting around but after having purchased some Slappy Inverted Hollows I'm no longer an Ace guy.
@@LeonPaxton it is surprisingly unnoticeable, except when primo, but I dont do any primo tricks. Love the stability of a wide truck for ramps, manuals, grinds, etc. They seem like just a little smaller than the Indy 169's. Between 159 and 169.
I have tensor mag lights and i hate them. They use custom bushings which are ultra soft and don't stiffen up much. You cant buy harder bushings either. They grind well. The weight is crazy but i just don't like them
Nah dude, they are still going strong to this day! The only hollow trucks I've had trouble with in the past is the Indy Forged hollows where the hanger cracked but these Ace's are great!
He used to skate a smaller popsicle deck, but now he likes egg shaped boards now. He made a video about it but can't remember the reasons on why he switched over to egg shaped
half of the stuff you just say, its a repeat. i dont think you know how to review something thats pretty simple to see the difference...also lighter doesnt always mean better, you can break youre axel easily when its light, most average skaters break the lighter truck compared to a mid heavy or very heavy truck.. like Indys and Thunders. if you are a light weight dude. having a heavy setup is going to make you use more energy by popping higher and giving more impact, compared to a light set up
What do you guys think of the Ace AF1’s?
AF1's have one of the shortest axle to axle wheelbase of any truck out there. This shorter axle WB is what gives it a "lighter" feeling due to the increased leverage at the tail/nose.

The aces are actually slightly shorter in wheelbase than Stg 11 Indys, which are in turn have a shorter wheelbase than Thunders or Ventures. And being that L. Paxton has been going up in size of decks, the smaller wheelbase of Aces makes it feel more similar to the narrower (lighter) decks that he originally learned to skate on.
that's so true man! No wonder they feel so light since they are hollow and create a shorter wheel base as well👌🏼
Great content Leon!
Thank you!
You should reach out to Rhino and ask to review their "Rocket Leon" it has a great kick!
@LeonPaxton how you dig'n the heroin stingy? I recently got an anti hero ten curbmandments and its my favorite non symmetrical board so far. Im riding indy titanium 169's and spitfire full conical 97a 54mm wheels, feels perfect.
I had to get rid of it, it just never became fully comfortable to ride 😅
That board is actually sick! It's similar to the Huffer shape right?
@@LeonPaxton I think the ten curbmandments is identical to the green giant, just different graphics.
Oh sick, I need to get one of those then!
Nice music!
Thanks dude!
How do they grind on street compared to a Tensor maglight?
I've actually never tried the Mag Lights so I wouldn't know man, sorry
I mean there's really no truck out there that grinds as smooth as tensor mags. But as far as all the other truck brands go, Aces are probably the smoothest
The only thing i dont like about the AF-1s is both pairs i had started making this obnoxious popping/clicking noise from the pivot cups after about a month or so. Other than that, great trucks. They do grind down fast though and the bushings will blow out. Only Ace bushings work in Ace trucks.
Damn, good to know! At least I know what's coming now lol
These parks look so amazing but scary cuz it looks slippery as heck
Haha yeah this one was pretty slick since it’s so new!
Do a review on bateau bay skatepark
Definitely will, that park is amazing!
switching from thunders to ace will make your wheelbase smaller, if you have a 14.6 wth aces would be a similar wheel base to a 14.3 with thunders. thunders and ventures give you the longest wheelbase
Very true! I haven't tried Venture trucks for about 18 years but I used to love Thunder trucks until I got used to the wider turns of Indy, Slappy and Ace trucks lol
Also having the hanger sit closer to the middle of the baseplate helps a lot with nose and tail slides 👌🏼
that park looks fun. i'm convinced AUS has some of the better ones.
Oh man it's so good!We are getting so spoilt in Sydney lol
what wheels do you currently skate?
I'm skating the Spitfire Radials dude, here's a video I did talking about them 👇🏽

@@LeonPaxton thanks leon!
Yeah I'm looking to try either those or the lights next 🤔
Slappy's really are that good!
Nice skate park. Slappy trucks are better than Ace trucks. Try the new lurpivs out when they come out.
Hell yeah, keen to try some Lurpiv's for sure!
I ride those 66's on an 8.5 and 8.75.
Damn! How did it feel with the axles hanging out past the board?
@@LeonPaxton it is surprisingly unnoticeable, except when primo, but I dont do any primo tricks. Love the stability of a wide truck for ramps, manuals, grinds, etc. They seem like just a little smaller than the Indy 169's. Between 159 and 169.
Oh that's good then, if anything you would have felt more stable since you have a wider base of support 👌🏼
awesomee
This curb is so long 😮
It's so good! 😍
@@LeonPaxton Now I am skating an egg board 8.5 with ace trucks AF1 hollows and I love it 😍!
ever skate a Franky v. primitive egg?!
Yeah dude, I loved it too!
❤ good day
AF1’s all day long… I like the hollows, but not necessary for most set-ups
They are feeling really good so far 👌🏼
I have tensor mag lights and i hate them. They use custom bushings which are ultra soft and don't stiffen up much. You cant buy harder bushings either.
They grind well. The weight is crazy but i just don't like them
Damn, maybe i won't end up trying them then lol
Get ace hollow hardware for just a little lighter
Is that a thing? 😂
Quick ckeck....did you bend or brake them already?
Hollows are scam in my opinion
Nah dude, they are still going strong to this day!
The only hollow trucks I've had trouble with in the past is the Indy Forged hollows where the hanger cracked but these Ace's are great!
I can always send y'all a free T-shirt if he needs one...
Thunder titanium lights.
They sound very light lol
Aren’t those still heavier than your thunder hollow light? 🤓 also I put this comment before actually watching the video lol
They actually could be, they definitely look heavier lol
You should just get a smaller board
Theres only one lighter truck, Tensor!
Ace Classics are better than AF1
Agree The Classics feel so much better and the metal feels nicer to grind being a bit softer.
I wholeheartedly disagree.
I'll have to try the classics!
Why do you need such a big board? You’re not that big. Even if you’re 6 foot nine you could skate an 8.5.
He used to skate a smaller popsicle deck, but now he likes egg shaped boards now. He made a video about it but can't remember the reasons on why he switched over to egg shaped
Who cares. If he's clearly comfortable with that size and can shred on it then I don't see why it matters.
I don't "need" such a big board, it's just more fun and comfortable for me to ride bigger boards lol
@@LeonPaxtonyou do you bruvva 🫡
Cool Board Leon 🥰 Bzzzzzz the Bee 🥰
I actually got rid of it, I just couldn't get used to the tail 😂
Always great vids boss! Super informative and it shows you really know skateboarding. All the best!👍🛹🇨🇦
Thanks dude, appreciate that heaps! Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
half of the stuff you just say, its a repeat. i dont think you know how to review something thats pretty simple to see the difference...also lighter doesnt always mean better, you can break youre axel easily when its light, most average skaters break the lighter truck compared to a mid heavy or very heavy truck.. like Indys and Thunders. if you are a light weight dude. having a heavy setup is going to make you use more energy by popping higher and giving more impact, compared to a light set up
