    When I boil my perlite, I fill the sieve up with it and then put it in the pot that way and pour the water over it and boil it (rather than filling the pot and then straining it). It's a lot less messy. Perlite is such a pain in the butt when it's all wet and sticks to everything.

    i have some tips for mold situations : some houses are more 'mold prone' then others. my house definetly is. and its absolutely normal, it depends on the age of the house, construction materials of the house, etc. mold spores are naturally found in the air, but if your house is like mine and anything that stays damp for a few days gets moldy having an air purifiyer helps A LOT. it doesnt cure the problem, especially if theres mold hidden in the walls, BUT it helps to lower the chances and frequency of things getting mold + it helps YOUR respiratory health ! ❤️🥳 sending love !

  • @rebeccahenderson7761
    @rebeccahenderson7761 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    In my prop box #1, I have nodes on top of perlite and with a little perlite built up around the node itself while leaving the ends of the stems suspended in air - and gotten actual mold & rot on the ends of the stems. I keep cutting the stems down with sterile razor blade and pack the ends with cinnamon. I have another box #2 that is doing very well absolutely no issues. The difference between the boxes is box #1 had plants that were dying and I've been trying to save them. I totally thought the nodes and stems were fine in #1, and have been continually surprised at the ongoing decline - of the 'stems'. In fact, I have some with new roots & new growth points but stems still rotting. Is this too much cinnamon?? I dig a hole and try to suspend the ends. The box #2 were all just regular propagations of healthy plants. I hadn't really distinguished the issue with box #1 till now - I'm thinking even though the ends were white and looked healthy maybe the plant is just a goner?? I don't know.

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is so interesting. It sounds like you are putting a lot of effort into saving them. They might just be goners at this point I suppose 😩

  • @BoojiePanda

    Hi Fern! Have you thought about trying Physan 20 to disinfect the perlite? It's meant for Orchids and a few other plants, but it's an algaecide, bactericide, virucide, and fungicide. I was thinking you could mix it up in a bucket of water and soak the perlite. I have read online where it's safe to use for flushing LECA, so perhaps that might be an easier solution than the stove. I bought a bottle specifically for disinfecting my plant tools, pots, prop bins, work surfaces. I disinfected some sphag with it, been almost a week now and haven't seen any negative effects in my pop box. I used 1/4 of the recommended dose for the sphag, and keep some of the mixture in a spray bottle for tools and whatnot. ❤️

      I just heard of Physan20 about a week or so ago and don’t know anyone personally who has experience using this product. Do you mind if I ask how it went, as it appears that your comment above is a year or so old now? Do you use it still today? If not, why did you stop? Any tips/tricks/warnings you would care to share? I’m hoping it will be the product I’ve been searching for as I have 100+ plants living in either aroid mix or a semi-hydro setup using LECA and/or perlite, and from what limited reading I’ve done since hearing about this product last week, it seems that Physan20 can be used for both setups with a relative equal degree of success. Thank you in advance for any feedback you would care to share!!

    • @BoojiePanda
      @BoojiePanda 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bdaly03 Just read the articles they have on the Physan website, they go over how much you use per gallon to disinfect tools and other things, and also go over how much to use per gallon for treating plants. I'm still using it, and have not had any plants have a bad reaction to it (always test on a single leaf first before treating the entire plant). I learned about the product from doing some research on the steps you take after receiving a plant grown in tissue culture. You'll also see it sold at a lot of shops that focus on Orchid supplies.
