    Good advice on how to plant. I pinch blooms too I’ll take the long term gain for more blooms later

    Pro tip: If you're planting for a particular colour scheme, don't pinch flowers off until planting is finished. You think you'll remember the colours but you won't.

    I have had problems with getting smaller 4 packs to grow as well in Florida due to heat and keeping them watered larger plants seem to stabilize and have a better root system

    My dahlias grow in big pots, get into my basement at the first frost and go outside in the same pots in spring. No annual dahlias for me.

      @katipohl2431, same here with the exception that I don't dig them out at all, and how that happened was by accident; I forgot to dig them out and was pleasantly surprised when they came up following year!? My guess it's because they're planted close to house foundation and have been coming up year after year for the last 5 years 🙂
      P.S. I forgot to add, my growing zone is 3 (long, cold snowy Winters) .

    How do you know how much spacing btwn plants based on directional spreading of the flower plant? I can never seem to know what direction the plant will go and end up having plants bump into each other despite planting based on spacing. BTW, your soil video helped me tremendously when I'm going to buy dirt in bulk vs bags. Found out 1 co. I was going to buy my top soil from doesn't mix w/ sand etc, jus 50/50 sand & top soil . Hmm. So going w/ another co. that does mixing based on percentage. Costs about $10-$20 more but better IMO than buying 50/50.

    My wife goes mad when I take off the flowers and pinch stems before planting. I’ve explained why, but it’s counterintuitive isn’t it? I wait for visitors to comment on how good my plants look by July and ask me what varieties they are. Same as theirs, mostly! 😂😂

    Ouch at pinching off the bloom. Just saw a how-to video said the same as you for better roots. Do you take the blooms off at a certian spot/place? It's really going to hurt when I actually do it in about a month, and do we do it to all plants like sunpatiens etc or pinch off plant specific? Thank you for responding in advance

    “ I’ve got a nice collection of annuals here”
    Immediately demonstrates a perennial.

    • @SupahGeck
      @SupahGeck 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      True but he's in Zone 5, where dahlias have to be dug up to be perennial. So the same as a potato or a pepper, technically a perennial but you treat them as annuals.

    Why does your previous video on peppers conclude it does matter if you pinch flowers? Should be the same, right?

    • @Gardenfundamentals1
      @Gardenfundamentals1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Different goals. Pinching peppers does make a bigger plant, but delays fruit.

    • @billsnyder6945
      @billsnyder6945 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Gardenfundamentals1 I meant the other part of your video about pinching pepper flowers does not make a difference, and to clarify, that is wrong advice for early flowers, meaning right before and right after transplanting, to let the plant get established before fruiting that would stunt it at worst or be too heavy at best. I totally get why pinching the plant is not a good strategy, I accidentally have pinched the plant going after early flowers, and grown enough peppers to know it is a delay and is not a massive increase in production or yield that makes it worth it. Peppers bush on their own if well cared for and growing right. Furthermore logic would tell you if it was that good, pepper growers would do it, it would be a minor effort to do so, but none do. As far as pinching flowers, their greenhouse methods do not produce them, lights, pots, and hardening off do. Surely you don’t disagree with pinching pepper flowers for those reasons. What is your experience with peppers?

    Can you elaborate on why/how nitrogen fertilizer produces more blooms? The rest of the gardening world says that will produce more LEAVES not BLOOMS. You have me totally confused now…

    • @Gardenfundamentals1
      @Gardenfundamentals1  ปีที่แล้ว

      The idea that nitrogen produces leaves is mostly wrong. Nitrogen in reasonable amounts makes plants grow bigger. Bigger plants produce more blooms.
      Really high amounts of nitrogen can retard blooms in some plants.

    • @samMTL514

      @@Gardenfundamentals1 sometimes, you do not want a bigger plant but you need lots of flowers. Especially when you grow in containers. I use high phosphorus fertilizer 10-50-10 (at CND Tiers) few weeks after my flower plants established. The amount of blooms and aroma is incredible.
