    Coffee grounds are another good thing to acidify the garden. Coffee grounds give nitrogen and magnesium, wood ash gives potassium and calcium. pH’s balance out. A match made in heaven 😃

    My city is still on the fire ban. When I saw you have a BUCKET OF WOOD ASH, I feel so jealous😭 when there is no fire ban, my neighborhood is still very unfriendly about burning wood and leaves. I saw a lot of posts about asking people stop burning leaves. Is there anyway to burn it with less smoke?

    I can use it to put in my chicken pen for them to have dust baths, but I won’t put it in my garden because my soil is already way too alkaline. I need to use something like peat moss to acidly it instead. I think wood ash might also be good for slugs and other bugs in more acid soil.

      Well I dont think he or she means salt as in table salt. If so that's no worry. Chemical SALTs are a form of combined elements. Maybe they are referring to one of them but bottom line is to use it in a limited way and if so, no worries.

    I have an approximate 4ft high by 8ft round pile of dirt that my grandfather burned leaves and sticks and scrap wood for over 50 years. I tested that soil using the soil, distilled water and baking soda. Had a fizz. Not a volcano fizz but a prominent fizz. The soil is dark and looks rich. Can this be used in garden beds, containers, buckets in some way?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It might have a lower pH which of course you know is more acidic (the fizz). You can always add garden lime and that helps bring it up. So you could use it in theory.

    I have an old fire pit that has a mix of natural compost ( old materials that naturally broke down into rich soil) and new ash from burning... I wasn't sure how to use it bc I was worried about pH. I have to dig it out and will likely get at least a 5g bucket. I was thinking maybe this particular compost would be nice for cucumbers?

      It will be high in pH if its had a lot of wood. I would sprinkle it around similar to what you saw me do but mine is just ash, so you can leave more behind.

    Can you use the ash you get from burning leaves as fertilizer instead of that from wood? Do they have the same effect?

  • @lgarden7086

    Thanks for the great information. We heat with wood and I use the ashes in my compost pile and in my gardens. I’ve wondered about the effect on my vegetable garden but you have clarified that for me 👍. I use ashes on in my perennial gardens and I believe some plants benefit from wood ash...possibly lavender and lilacs? Another way I use it is to circle around plants that slugs chew on because I don’t think they like crawling over the ashes.

      Coffee grounds are fully composted. They will be a good source of nitrogen. Mixed in the soil they can cause issues will they decay. On the surface of the soil they are okay.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So it is not ash. Technically it is biomass like wood, heated and decomposed without oxygen. Think of packing a pot full of wood and flipping it upside down on a sheet of metal in a fire pit. Burn wood around it and it heats to high temps. The wood inside the pot becomes bio char. That is the no technically version. I imagine the end results to the plants over time, isnt much different.
